These elegant, Fergus Pollock styled cars were first introduced at the Geneva motor show in 1996. Available in both convertible and coupe form, they were warmly received by the public and ultimately over 90,000 were sold, mainly to the UK and US markets.

A worthy successor to the XJS, the XK8 pioneered Jaguars first home grown V8. Previous V8 Jaguar offerings had, very successfully, utilised a Daimler unit. However, this new engine was highly innovative and featured 32 valves, variable valve timing and a power output of ~290BHP.

True to its Jaguar pedigree the XK8 looks every inch the feline predator with more than a hint of E-type heritage. Sharing a platform with the Aston Martin DB7, it’s a beautiful, luxurious, powerful sports car capable of delivering an engaging, communicative and exhilarating driving experience.

This lovely 1997 convertible comes to auction in iconic, “Jaguar Racing Green” over an Ivory leather interior. In great condition and having covered just over ~10,000 miles in the last decade, it’s ready for a new owner to put the hood down and take to the lanes in the summer of 2022.

Meet the owner

It was love at first sight for me when I saw one back in 1997 – beautiful smooth, flowing lines and such a fantastic drive.

From when Tony first saw an XK8 in 1997 he knew he would have his own one one day. That chance came a couple of years ago and he bought this lovely convertible. Tony says of the car: “As well as being incredible to look at the cares drives so well – It’s so gentle round town yet can be very quick when needed”.

He goes on to say: “I’d love to keep it but following a back injury I find getting in and out a little too difficult – I have loved the car so I really hope a new owner can get the same fun and enjoyment as I’ve had”. Exterior

Is there really any other colour! – the iconic Jaguar Racing Green perfectly complements the smooth, flowing lines and classic Jaguar styling

Wheels and Tyres

The 7 spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels are in good condition with only minor kerbing and age related marks.

The centre badges are in great shape and the wheels are wearing Pirelli 215/55 ZR tyres which appear to have good tread remaining. View the media gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines look good and boot, bonnet and both doors open and close with satisfying precision. There is no apparent distortion in the panels and overall, the bodywork looks fantastic. The hood appears in good condition and Tony demonstrated the mechanism working exactly as it should.

Underneath there is some surface corrosion on the base of the outer sills and underseal has been applied to the relatively recent welding repair recorded in the paperwork. Take a look at the high-resolution photos and videos to assess the condition of this lovely car for yourself.

Paint

The beautiful, metallic racing green paintwork is even and consistent with a deep shine right across the car. There are only very minor, age-related marks but you really do have to search to find them. For a 25-year-old car the condition of the paint is remarkable.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear very good with no significant marks or scratches. There is a very minor mark on the nearside top edge of the windscreen as shown in the photos but, in fairness, we are being very picky!

Badging and trim look great and belie the cars age. Overall, the car looks stunning.

Jaguar at their finest – beautiful ivory leather, burl walnut dash and stunning sports tourer ergonomics.

Seats and Carpets

Remarkable! Only a hint of wear on the stunning ivory leather seats and trim with the coffee-coloured carpets looking fantastic too.

Dashboard

The burl walnut dash really looks in wonderful shape. We could see no peeling or crazing of the varnish, no scratches and all the instruments and switches looked great.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Perfectly in keeping with the rest of the interior the burl walnut and leather trimmed steering wheel presents beautifully. Likewise the leather and walnut trimmed automatic gear selector looks fantastic.

Mechanics

Jaguars first V8 engine and what a debut – smooth, refined and effortless power delivery through a slick and refined automatic gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

The ~290BHP V8 sits comfortably in a clean and tidy engine bay, the engine looks fantastic and sounds even better. On our cold start the car fired up without hesitation, idled steadily, oil pressure was good and emissions look clear.

Check out the cold start for yourself in the ‘On the Road’ video where you’ll see the car starts well from cold and quickly settles down to a steady and even idle. There is excellent oil pressure showing on the gauge and emissions from the twin, stainless steel, exhaust system appears clear.

Suspension and Brakes

On our short drive with Tony the suspension felt stable with no excessive roll and the car felt comfortable and planted. With vented discs front and rear the braking seemed responsive, balanced and capable. This is Jaguar engineering after all. Tony assures us that brakes and suspension all work as they should

The Drive

On the test drive with Tony the car was quiet and comfortable with that lovely V8 soundtrack humming away promisingly. The car pulled well, accelerated quickly and pulled up straight and evenly when needed. With no untoward knocks, rattles or bangs, a beautiful interior and such a wonderful powerplant we really didn’t want the test drive to stop!

Electrics and Other

All dials, switches and other electrical controls appear unbroken and in good condition. The car is equipped with air conditioning, traction control selection, electric windows and hood and a period radio cassette player. Tony assures us everything works exactly as it should.

History and Paperwork

These early XK8’s, in this colourway are getting harder to find, especially in this condition – this is a fantastic example ready to offer a stylish, comfortable and thoroughly rewarding driving experience.

Getting firmly established as one of Jaguars most beautiful designs is no small achievement given the competition! But that’s exactly what the XK8 has done, and it really is no surprise.

Presenting in very good condition inside and out this is an opportunity not to be missed. This lovely car comes with original wallet containing manuals, maintenance service book, radio instructions and driver’s handbook. There is some service history and some recent MOT certificates. The car will be sold with a fresh MOT.
