Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

With a powerful 4.0 litre, V8 engine and also a convertible - it could quite possibly be the perfect grand tourer?

These elegant, Fergus Pollock styled cars were first introduced at the Geneva motor show in 1996. Available in both convertible and coupe form, they were warmly received by the public and ultimately over 90,000 were sold, mainly to the UK and US markets. A worthy successor to the XJS, the XK8 pioneered Jaguar's first homegrown V8. Previous V8 Jaguar offerings had, very successfully, utilised a Daimler unit. However, this new engine was highly innovative and featured 32 valves, variable valve timing and a power output of ~290BHP.

True to its Jaguar pedigree the XK8 looks every inch the feline predator with more than a hint of E-type heritage. Sharing a platform with the Aston Martin DB7, it’s a beautiful, luxurious, powerful sports car capable of delivering an engaging, communicative and exhilarating driving experience.

This lovely 1997 Jaguar XK8 was purchased from a client in 2017 when it had been owned by the same keeper for the past 18 years. Presented in a beautiful combination of "Sapphire Blue" with "Oatmeal" leather interior, just 3 former keepers registered, and serviced in May 2022, this car is ready for the summer.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Linda the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having been dealing with my client for several years - when the car came up for sale, I jumped at the chance.

Linda has owned this XK8 since 2017. She purchased the car from a client who had owned the car since 1999, and who had cherished the car as you will be able to tell from the paperwork. With excellent service history and the car always being kept in a garage, it was the perfect car for Linda.

Unfortunately, a medical condition with Linda’s eyes means that driving the XJ8 has become quite difficult and so it is being sold, hopefully going to an enthusiast who will cherish it as much as she has. Please feel free to ask Linda any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Smooth sleek lines and a long bonnet, classic Jaguar styling - would you have it any other way... we don’t think so.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 7-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, these are in good condition with just a small kerb mark on one wheel.

The tyres are matching Pirelli and have a good amount of tread remaining. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this 1997 Jaguar XK8 convertible is in excellent condition. There are no dings or dents to point out and the doors, bonnet and boot have equal shut lines and open and close with ease. The convertible roof is in good condition with no issues to report, and this operates as it should going up and down in around ~45 seconds which can be seen in our exterior review video.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior, for you to make up your own minds on the condition.

Paint

Finished in paint code (JGE) "Sapphire Blue Metallic" the Jaguar presents well. There is a nice shine to the finish of the paint which could be enhanced with a machine polish to remove some of the light swirl marks which have been picked up over the years. There are some very minor stone chips to the front, and a small mark to the nearside front wheel arch, but certainly less than you would expect for a vehicle of this age.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show you the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves and for you to make your own minds up on the condition.

Glass and Trim

The windows all look to be in good order, with no noticeable scratches to be seen. Also in good condition are the anthracite aluminium window trims, which are quite a favourite for corrosion creeping in, but not in this case.

The lights both to the front and rear are in good condition with no splits or cracks to the lenses.

Interior

Jaguar’s finest Oatmeal trim is the perfect colour combination against the Sapphire blue exterior.

Seats and Carpets

For many years the Jaguar has had a set of custom-made seat covers fitted which has protected the seats from any excessive wear and tear. Therefore the Oatmeal leather is in excellent condition showing just some minor creasing.

The carpets are in good order, with a set of XK8 mats adding extra protection. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard, finished in Oatmeal to match the seats, is in excellent condition along with the burl walnut fascia which shows no signs of cracking or crazing to the lacquered finish.

The instruments are in excellent condition and are all reported to be working as they should, with no warning lights displayed and the odometer showing a reading of ~84,494 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Half leather, half wood, the steering wheel is in good condition with very little wear to be seen. The gear knob is wood and in good order with no wear to the surround or lettering.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The mighty 4.0 litre V8 was Jaguar’s first V8 - and what an engine it is with ~290BHP at your disposal.

Engine and Gearbox

Looking around the V8 there do not appear to be any leaks. The XK8 engine fires up from cold first time, which can be seen in our "Mechanical review" video, and sounds fantastic.

Out on the road, the Jag pulls well through the gears and the change is smooth, you can hardly tell it's changing. There are no untoward noises to be heard coming from the transmission or drivetrain on our run.

Suspension and Brakes

As you would expect from Jaguar, the ride is smooth and stable, and the car soaks up the road with ease providing a reassuring feel in the bends with no excessive body roll. Bringing you to a halt the brakes are working as they should with no juddering through the pedal or pulling to either side.

The Drive

We took a drive out with Simon, Linda's husband. The ride is smooth and quiet even with the roof down. There is the distinct sound of the V8 when the loud pedal is pressed but when cruising it is a calming drive making it the perfect tourer.

Electrics and Other

Everything in the car is reported to be working just as it should. The switchgear all looks to be in good order with no wear to the lettering on the buttons. There is a CD multi-changer in the boot fitted to the right-hand side, and part of a Road Angle system which has not been used for a number of years. The spare wheel is present, along with the jack and wheel brace.

History and Paperwork

With 17 service stamps and only ~84,494 miles - it’s safe to say the XK8 has been well maintained.

The owner’s manuals are present for the Jaguar along with the service book, which has an impressive 17 service stamps, and the last one being carried on the 11th May 2022 at 84,457 miles means it is set up and ready for another 12 months of motoring. There is a large collection of previous MOT certificates and invoices for work carried out over the years. Linda has had a full MOT carried out on the 22nd May 2022 ready for its new home.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, and V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
