Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Supercharged pace and comfort with stunning looks - now is the time to investigate!

Possibly the grandest tourer you can buy at this level, the XKR is a perfect example of an increasingly appreciating classic. Its impressive performance, style and finishing are a tribute to the re-invention of Jaguar as the maker of luxury supercars. The XKR convertible was one of the main sellers in the X100 series of the XK range, offering tasteful open-top motoring that not only used the new Supercharged 4.0-litre 32-valve Jaguar AJ-V8 engine, but proved that Jaguar could sell tens of thousands of these premium roadsters without a lapse in quality.

Fully loaded with a full leather interior and walnut veneer, this 2000 XKR Convertible has been cherished by the same owner for 20 years and has been fastidiously maintained. This R-pack model with gold 20” BBS split rims, and uprated suspension is finished in a timeless Titanium Mica Grey colourway. With an excellent body of invoices, MOTs and a regular service schedule, it comes with an MOT to January 2024 and has barely seen 20 miles since its last service.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Dudley the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always liked the lines of the E-Type and the XKR is a perfect tribute.

Dudley has a long admiration of Coventry's finest, having owned several Jaguars in the past. In 2003, when this car was just 3 years old, he went over to his main Jaguar dealer and treated himself to the supercharged thrills of an XKR. Since then it has been carefully maintained and used mainly for leisure duties, but has allowed the car to stretch its legs on longer journeys to ensure it runs as sweetly as possible.

As an active member of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Dudley has attended several meets and likes to keep abreast of the brand, and he is likely to replace the car with a newer model in the near future.

Exterior

The visual presentation is very positive - a legacy of the owners meticulous care of the car.

Wheels and Tyres

The distinctive optional 'Detroit' Split rim BBS 20" alloys are in good shape, with only mild corrosion just starting to come through, but a straightforward task for a wheel refurbisher to renovate.

All of the premium Pirelli P-Zero tyres were fitted last year and therefore in excellent condition.

Bodywork

Pleasingly solid throughout, as to be expected of a car that has been garaged for most of its life and only used as an occasional car. The structure is good, with no outstanding issues noted, with nothing more than light surface corrosion coating the rear sill section of the floor pan and rear lower inner arch seams/back sills.

There was very little to distract the eye in terms of the exterior presentation, with no significant dents - an excellent panel fit and even gaps for each of the doors. All open and close with ease.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Titanium Mica Grey paint finish not only modernises the curvy lines of the body but reveals a good lustre with no outstanding blemishes, other than a little light scruffing noted on the near-side section of the nose of the car.

The paint is even and matching throughout, with very little in terms of chips or day-to-day damage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, with no signs of lamination damage, decent rubber seals and no evidence of stone chip repairs. Both sides of the door glass drop and then returns when the door is closed.

The trim has lasted well, with no outstanding blemishes other than a little weathering noted on the nearside shoulder trim. The lights are all intact, with no suggestions of lens damage. The owner has pointed out that both the auto-folding door mirrors will need investigation, as they're currently not operating.

Interior

Jaguar's reputation for cabin quality has meant that his one has retained its opulent luxury.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are in good shape, with just minor signs of age noted on the driver seat, all are free from marks. There is a 1/2 tear to the leather of the drivers seat base as pictured.

The carpets and mats are intact, with very little in terms of wear. The spacious boot shows light use, and Dudley admitted that it only tends to be used for his Golf clubs.

There was no evidence of any water buildup in the cabin or boot.

Dashboard

As to be expected for a premium car of this mileage, the dashboard is not only intact and free of wear but has a full bill of working health. The leather elements of the walnut veneer facia appear to be in excellent shape with light signs of age noted on some plastics.

The switch gear is intact with no real signs of wear.

The car is fitted with its original tape deck and boot-mounted CD changer, along with its still operational GPS system.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Finishing off a near-perfect interior presentation, the steering wheel and gear lever are close to faultless.

Mechanics

Its drives and performs with composed refinement - but that fabulous supercharged noise is just a blip away.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up immediately, having been placed on a trickle charger in the owner's garage. The supercharged 4.0-lite V8 powerplant idles smoothly, with no unwanted noises heard while the engine was on tick-over. The engine presentation is positive.

The dashboard warning lights remained after the cold start. The car produced a little of the expected exhaust condensation, which soon cleared up once the engine warmed up. There were no signs of any fluid leaks noted, with mild signs of corrosion noted on the exhaust pipes, but not at the stage where it was blowing.

The Mercedes-derived 5-speed auto gearbox operates faultlessly, the owner demonstrated its seamless delivery throughout its revs with no slackness or hesitation observed.

Suspension and Brakes

As we travelled along the somewhat unmaintained roads A-roads, the car soaked up the ruts and cambers with even balance and no outstanding issues in terms of knocks or thuds. It's worth noting that some of the suspension components show surface rust and are flagged as advisories.

The car brakes evenly, as the owner demonstrates plenty of confidence in its ability to slow and stop the car. The steering maintains a vibration-free action, with no issues heard in terms of full lock or braking.

The Drive

For a car that is approaching 23 years old, it drives exceptionally well. The lack of low-speed wind noise and the hushed ambience of the suspension is mildly offset by the background noise of not having a fixed metal roof, but it is still a calming and reassuring environment to be in. As Dudley kicked down and applied firm prod of the acceleration, it produced a refined yet purposeful hum from the engine.

Dudley also reported decent reliability over his 20 years of ownership, with no reports of recent oil pressure issues or engine temperature woes.

Electrics and Other

The soft top is in good condition, with mild signs of age but retracts and raises perfectly with no straining of the motors. The rear glass is intact. The owner also informed us that the fluid in the hood’s hydraulic system has been replaced.

There was no evidence of outdoor elements on the roof, backing up the car's perpetual indoor storage. The clip-on leather hood cover is in excellent condition and also comes with its original storage jacket.

History and Paperwork

The car has seen regular servicing and has had £5k's worth of maintenance over the last 5 years.

Bought from Guy Salmon in 2003, with 22,623 miles on the clock, Dudley has only covered an additional 30K since then but has maintained a tight servicing schedule and ensured that any issues that came up were rectified by several trusted specialists. The car has seen regular electrical tests to iron out minor issues, with the addition of a new coil pack in 2018 and replacement fuel pumps in 2021.

Upon advice from his mechanic, he also replaced all four tyres as a measure of safety in 2022, despite their low wear. It has service stamps in its book up to 45K, with several recent invoices that suggest that the car has been serviced but not stamped.

It comes with its owner's leather wallet, with a full complement of booklets, as well as 2 keys. Along with a good body of previous MOTs, it has a ticket to January 2024 and was last serviced in February 2023.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
