2022 Jaguar C-Type (Suffolk Recreation)

Now available for sale

Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Suffolk Sports Cars has created one of the closest recreations of the fantastic 1950s Jaguar C-type.

Launched in 1951, the Jaguar C-type (Competition) or XK120-C made its way to becoming a two-time Le Mans 24 Hours race winner and triple Millie Miglia winner. Unfortunately, if you can find the C-type, they demand a very high price tag, but a cheaper alternative is the option of finding a recreation of the famous Jaguar.

This example is made by Suffolk Sports Cars, who have recreated the C-type as close as possible to the original, including the live rear axle with trailing link suspension, front independent torsion bar suspension, and disc brakes on each corner. The car comes as a chassis which you flip and build the underside before attaching the suspension and running gear. It is then sent back to Suffolk Sports Cars to have the body attached and painted before it is returned to the builder for the final interior fit. Once completed, Suffolk will do the necessary preparations to get the car approved with the IVA test.

This stunning example was completed in 2022 by our vendor, Tony. There are said to have been just 50 of the kits produced by Suffolk, making this an extremely desirable and sought-after Jaguar C-type recreation.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Tony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

With an engineering background in the Aerospace industry, Tony has thoroughly enjoyed building the C-type.

Tony has always been one for taking a hands-on approach to classic cars and gets the pleasure of restoring or building to the best of his ability. The Jaguar C-type has been one of those cars he has always admired, but not being financially viable to own one, the idea of a recreation was perfect. He came across the C-type manufactured by Suffolk Sports Cars some time ago, and after several visits to their factory, it was clear this car was the one for him. Some of the reasons for the decision were down to the similarities between the original cars and Suffolk’s; they had spent a great deal of time developing and making the car as close to the original as possible.

Exterior

Built as close to the original dimensions as possible, the C-type is a superb recreation completed to the highest standards.

Wheels and Tyres

The spoked wheels have been finished in red to match the interior and sit well against the Siber Gray exterior.

A full set of Blockley period-looking tyres are fitted and are in excellent condition, having only covered ~66 miles.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork is 60% aluminium and 40% Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP). The main areas, such as the interior, are aluminium to give a true representation of the original car. The parts which are GRP have been finished by Suffolk very well; it is difficult to tell from the outside that the body is GRP. The panel gaps are excellent, and everything fits as it should with an equal gap.

The underside has been finished with aluminium sheets to give a smooth finish, just like the original C-types.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in Siber Gray, which is a period Mercedes colour; the C-type looks fantastic. There are some Old English White areas ready to apply some number decals to enhance the racing look. There is a tiny amount of paint chipped off on the door hinge, but this could easily be touched in.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The adjustable Brooklands windows are in excellent condition with no damage or tarnishing to the chrome. A perspex screen has been installed just in front of these and is free from scratches.

The headlight lenses are excellent and have some P700 light units fitted behind them, and there are also some discrete indicators fitted within the unit. The rear lights are period-looking, and again, there have been some discreetly fitted indicators installed lower down beneath the body.

Interior

A beautiful period-looking leather interior takes you straight to the 1950s.

Seats and Carpets

Small bucket seats have been used and trimmed in St James’s Red leather with a diamond stitch pattern. These, as you can imagine, are excellent. A set of harnesses holds you tightly, and the transmission tunnel has been insulated.

Carpets are clean and tidy and help to protect the aluminium floor from scratching. There are also leather pads fitted to the sides, helping prevent your knees from banging against the sides.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard has everything you need; a selection of instruments show the oil pressure, water temperature, petrol, and amps in addition to the tachometer, which, as you will notice, turns anti-clockwise just like the original C-type. The odometer shows just ~66 miles that have been covered since the build was completed.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three-spoke steering wheel is in excellent condition and has a brass ‘Jaguar Cars Ltd Coventry’ badge mounted to the centre. The aluminium gearknob is free from any scratches, as is the handbrake lever.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The 4.2 litre straight-six has covered just ~66 miles since its full rebuild and installation into the C-type.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with a Jaguar 4.2 litre straight-six, this has been fully rebuilt and is running with no issues. The car starts up on the button and can even be started from inside the engine bay. The triple 45 DCOE Weber carburettors sound fantastic, sucking in the air/fuel mixture.

A four-speed gearbox has been used, it has overdrive too. The gear selection is precise, and the C-type pulls strongly through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

Fitted with Gaz adjustable dampers, the ride is firm without being harsh. There are no knocks or bangs coming from the suspension, and everything is in like new condition. The car also has a live rear axle like the original cars would have had.

Fitted with discs on each corner, the C-type comes to a stop quickly if needed, with no issues reported by Tony.

The Drive

If you want a car which turns heads, then look no further; the sound and looks certainly draw attention, and it's a fantastic vehicle to be in, which provides a wonderful driving experience.

Electrics and Other

Inside the C-type is quite minimal, but Tony reports that, what switchgear is there, is working correctly, and there are no issues to mention. There is a switch to the right of the steering wheel to operate the indicators.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

There is a full list of parts used during the rebuild - adding everything together comes in at over £100,000.

Tony has a large selection of invoices for the C-Type totalling in excess of £100,000, coming mainly from Suffolk Sports Cars. There is also a collection of photographs showing some stages of the build.

The car has been registered with the DVLA and undergone the appropriate Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test, for which there is also a certificate.

A very desirable recreation Jaguar C-type from Suffolk Sports Cars, which has been finished to an excellent standard and used for just ~66 miles since completion.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
