Introduction

Kulraj Singh Salh
COO

These Grand Tourers, with their special Anglo American connection, are always a favourite amongst classic enthusiasts. Built in West Bromwich with a big American V8 up front.

This particular example is a Mk III, a 1973 UK RHD car that has had a lot of money spent on it over the years (we did a quick tally of the invoices from the current owner, some £40,000 spent). There is something about the Interceptor that always captures peoples attention. The aggressive front end styling, or what must have been quite a modern/futuristic rear end to the car with all that glass in the rear window, or perhaps and more likely it's the sound of that 7.2L V8. Whichever it is, heads do definitely turn!

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Jeremy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Getting a Mk III Interceptor was the only choice for me, it had to have air-conditioning, a rare thing in a classic car!

Jeremy has owned this car for over 13 years, having acquired it when it had covered some 71,000 miles. Consigning the car, the odometer now reads at 74,468, and that is ultimately his reason for selling; the car just isn't getting the use it deserves.

Leading a busy life, Jeremy has always wanted to get more involved with the various classic meets and clubs, but just hasn't been able to find the time. He's still covered a couple of hundred miles a year in the car, it feels like it would be criminal not to, and covered some major works on the car both from a cosmetic and mechanical perspective as detailed in the history section.

Exterior

Finished in an of the era brown, this car oozes that classic car appeal that so many people love.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with the 5 spoke style Interceptor wheels that you see on the later Mark III models. Pirelli tyres all around, the wheels themselves could benefit from being refurbished/repainted to match the quality of the rest of the exterior.

Bodywork

The styling on this car is something to behold, particularly the gorgeous rear of the car with the large wrap around rear window forming part of the boot.

Jeremy has maintained the car with various specialists over the years, a major external refurbishment was carried out in 2011, and any other bits as required over the years. The shut-lines and panel gaps as a result look great across the entire car.

Paint

Finished in a period and classy brown that looks just right for this car. It'll get your imagination going and transport you to a time gone by for sure.

In terms of the finish and colour, as you'll see from the extensive photos and videos, even across the entire car. Very little to report back on this front, a few nicks here and there like the bottom of the drivers door, but overall the car looks great.

Glass and Trim

The glass wearing its "Triple XXX" badging, and the trim across the car looks great. The stainless steel bumpers and window trim etc look great, likely to have been replaced during restorative work over the years. The window rubbers were changed relatively recently as per the invoices in the history section.

Interior

The cabin of the Interceptor is a luxurious place, big leather seats and leather trim front and back.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in a cream leather, with cream coloured carpets through the car too, it's a great contrasting colour to the brown exterior.

The seats are in good condition, and would benefit from a professional treatment to bring the colour and quality of the leather back to its former glory. There is a small nick in the bottom section of the drivers seat, the size of a 10p coin, other than that they really just need a good clean and treatment.

Dashboard

The dashboard with the extended dials in the centre console really give you the sense that you're driving something special.

All look great, and Jeremy informs us that everything is working as it should do.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Jeremy replaced the steering wheel as the old one broke unfortunately! The classic wooden steering wheel looks in excellent condition as you'd expect for a replacement. The gearstick looks to be original, and has wear present on the gear-knob in line with the cars mileage.

Take a look at the video review of the interior to see the detail.

Mechanics

A massive American V8 upfront, a 7.2L block from Chrysler, paired with an automatic gearbox sending power to the rear, a great combination for this GT.

Engine and Gearbox

The old 6.3L V8 was replaced by the 7.2L Chrysler block for the Interceptor III in 1971. This example is fitted with the automatic gearbox, and Holly carburettor.

Jeremy has kept the car serviced and maintained over the years, you'll see lots of invoices to ensure the upkeep of the car in the history section. He mentions that sometimes selecting drive on the gearbox requires a second attempt, but otherwise the car drives and works as it should.

Suspension and Brakes

Along with the relevant engine work required, the suspension and brakes have had major work in the current ownership too. This has put the car in good stead for the new owner to acquire and drive from the get go.

The Drive

Jeremy has covered somewhere in the region of 4,000 miles in his ownership, and he reports that the car works as it should do.

We actioned a cold start video on the photography day, you'll see the car sprung in to life on the third attempt, after it had been sitting for around a month without use. The sound of the V8 burbling away on idle tells you everything you need to know about that 7.2L block.

Electrics and Other

A classic that has working air-conditioning! This was a key factor for Jeremy when he was looking to get a Jensen Interceptor, hence acquiring a Mk III. Jeremy informs us that all the electrics etc work as they should do on the car.

The car has a CD player fitted, with a working electric aerial too. Jeremy has an old radio/cassette player that will go with the car too, although he isn't sure if it is the original one but certainly looks period.

History and Paperwork

With just over £40,000 spent on the car in the last 13 years, this Jensen Interceptor is superb.

From photos detailing the condition before and after restoration, a wealth of invoices and notes pertaining to the history of the Interceptor, this example is a really shining example that's provenance is worthy of the condition.
