Introduction

Kulraj Salh
COO

Some say never meet your heroes... I say it would be rude not to! When offered the chance to consign and drive this, I snapped at the opportunity.

Boy racer good looks... 6x WRC winning pedigree... Italian... quite the combination I think. The Evo 2 was the final instalment of what proved to be a very very successful hot hatch for Lancia.

This particular example finished in Lord Blue with beige Alcantara interior is just my cup of tea from a looks perspective, and then there's the drive... [insert heart eye emoji here]. Responsive, tight, light, it was an absolute pleasure and surprised me somewhat too. I was half expecting it to be a bit more lairy and loose what with it being a platform that although heavily modified over the years, was effectively a budget hatchback penned in Italy in the 70s.

This however it is definitely not, believe the hype I say, this is the one to have.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Surjit the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Surjit loves cars and is always in the market for another driving experience.

He is also a great friend and loyal client of ours at Trade Classics - a proper petrolhead - talking, researching and driving cars all the time. He takes care of his cars and you can see by this Evo 2 what kind of cars he relishes driving - the fun ones! We had a great day with him recently as we met him outside the office and took some amazing shots of some of the cars he is selling.

Having owned an Evo I, for many many years, and selling sometime in the noughties, Surjit had a hankering for another. This time he opted to go for the final evolution, the Evo II. Surjit has covered around 1,000Km in the car in the year. As you'll see in our "Meet The Owner" interview, he's finding himself erring more towards the gentleman's GT rather than a hot hatch having scratched that itch once more.

Exterior

Finished in “Bleu Lord”, this particular Evo II flies in stealth mode compared to other colours like the Giallo variant. With the aggressive detailing, a lot of which is very practical, photographing it was a real pleasure.

Wheels and Tyres

16" 18-Spoke Lancia Delta alloys and Pirelli tyres all around. Presented in great condition along with the tyres, which are a year old with loads of tread.

Surjit had the wheels refurbished when he bought them, but has unfortunately managed to scrape the front right wheel on a curb recently.

Bodywork

Bulges, flares, vents… This car has it all. We didn’t see any dents or other damage across the car - highlighting Surjit’s caring ownership.

Please watch the ‘Exterior Review’ video to see for yourself, the only point to note is a small bit of corrosion on the top right of the windscreen.

Paint

The Lord Bleu paint is looking immaculate. Showing an excellent uniformity across the car. You will see some minor stone chips along with the front bumper and bonnet.

The car received a fresh paint job in 2011 along with new badges throughout the first UK owner’s period.

Glass and Trim

All looks tip top. The car has had new badges put in place during a refurbishment in the UK. Some of them look like the laminate has gone a little cloudy again. The only other point to mention is the rubber protection around the off-side wing mirror seems to have worked loose.

Interior

Recaro seats and a set of dials that will delight any sports car enthusiast.

Seats and Carpets

Recaro sports seats in beige Alcantara, and matching carpets throughout. The detailing across the seats and door cards looks great and is a testament to the care this car has had. Take a look at the video review to see the excellent condition across the whole interior.

Most of the interior was expertly reupholstered in late 2011 and ready in January 2012.

Dashboard

A very clean and crisp dashboard. The yellow dials are great! The dashboard looked straight and free from any warping which can be seen in a full review of the photos and video.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both are in excellent condition in line with the car’s mileage with no issues. The Momo racing steering wheel is a deeper variant meaning the steering is slightly closer to you for more control.

Mechanics

One of the greatest engineering feats of any hot hatch-back ever, what a car.

Engine and Gearbox

A 2.0L turbocharged 16-valve engine produces 212 bhp at 6500 rpm, wow. Please watch our usual ‘On the Road’ video to see the car performing whilst driving.

The 5-speed manual transmission changes gear smoothly, as can be seen in the video. On buying the car, Surjit had it inspected and a major service completed by Walkers, the specialist Lancia garage. This included an all important cambelt change and other works detailed in the invoices.

Suspension and Brakes

The rally suspension and set-up in this car provides a stiff drive but feels great when producing torque and tension. We didn’t hear any knocks or rattles on the drive, and the car stopped with no issues towards the end of the video.

As you can see by the underside photos of the car, the suspension and brakes are in very good condition. In May 2014, the underneath was professionally cleaned. The brake discs were also serviced at the time too.

The Drive

The steering is tight and direct, all the making for a very responsive and comfortable journey. The seats are incredibly lush to sit in too.

We were happy with how responsive the turbo was, giving you that classic pinned to your seat feeling when it kicks in.

Electrics and Other

Surjit assures us all of the electrics should work as expected. You can see by the paperwork file any electrical issues have been taken care of in the past. The air-conditioning wasn't really blowing cold on a muggy day, likely needing a service and gas.

History and Paperwork

Lots of service history, and importantly serviced by Walkers with a new cambelt.

From 2011 the car has been registered for use in the UK after being imported in 2010. The first UK owner got to work to really make this example shine again. He performed a lengthened restoration that dealt with all cosmetic and mechanical niggles the car had, as can be seen in the paperwork section.

Prior to its arrival in the UK, there are a number of service records charting its life in Japan. These provide an almost complete picture of the cars life.
