Introduction

Matt Nolan
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Icon, national treasure, British institution; few vehicles fit these descriptions better than the immortal Landie.

First hitting the world stage in 1948, designer Maurice Wilks Land Rover was an instant success. Part of the plan to help Britain recover from post war austerity and Rover get back to its staple of selling luxury executive cars, these vehicles were originally seen as a "stop gap". History tells a different story however, and when Rover did get back into its stride, Land Rover sales would outstrip the companies other vehicles by a ratio of 2 to 1. Enjoying a 68 year production run, the Land Rover has to be one of the most successful vehicles of all time. Developed far beyond its original agricultural specification the Land Rover found work in multiple arenas including battle zones, safaris, medical emergencies and the arctic circle.

This "Landie" has lived a life. It's a Series IIA, often considered to be the most desirable of these classics with the 88" short wheelbase and 2.25L petrol power-plant. A new galvanised chassis was fitted in 2021 and apart from sensible upgrades such as electronic ignition and a Weber carburettor, this vehicle is coming to auction is pretty original.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matt after meeting Kevin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

True beasts of burden, these are classics you actually use, and use it I have!

Kevin is a true Landie enthusiast. Having owned a series 1 for 26 years he wanted a series II and NHO fitted the bill. He goes on to tell us "We use it for people, dogs, fuel, shopping and my sea fishing canoe. They're fantastic to drive and great for viewing the countryside, there's not much, on or off road, that can get in their way!".

Sadly with Kevins two dogs passing away, and his wife cheekily saying he is too old for the sea canoe, it's time for this Land Rover to go on to provide sterling service to a new owner. Kevin will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Utilitarian charm with a few war wounds, just what you'd expect to see on a Land Rover.

Wheels and Tyres

The pressed steel wheels are in great condition with plenty of tread on the tyres and mud-flaps on all four corners. The wheels have been painted the same colour as the body, no visible signs of corrosion and just a thin line on the very outer edge has some paint missing on some of the wheels.

View the picture gallery and exterior video to see the detail.

Bodywork

Ok, you won't be winning any concours competitions with this car but that really isn't what it's about is it? This is a dependable workhorse with a few dents in the panels, but all importantly with a new galvanised chassis fitted in September, it's ready for decades more useful service.

Check out the photos and video to appreciate how solid this vehicle really is.

Paint

The paint is solid all over and there doesn't appear to be any significant corrosion on the panels. There has been some brush painted touch up work over the years leading to variations in panel shade in some areas.

View the video review to see the paint for different angles and assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

Clear and unbroken, the glass in general is in good condition with some inevitable age related marks but nothing that limits the enjoyability of this vehicle. Trim and badging are good, aged as you would expect and really adding to the period feel on this Landie.

Interior

A heady mix of functionality and 60's charm, a fantastic viewpoint and place to be when driving.

Seats and Carpets

The vinyl floor covering and seats were apparently a Rover design feature to allow these cars to be washed out quickly with a hose!

All are in great condition. Front and rear seats are comfortable with no apparent rips or tears.

Dashboard

The bakelite switches and controls all appear unbroken and Kevin confirms everything works as it should. The dashboard is simple and tough, this is a proper classic off-roader after all.

View the interior video review to see the detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel, gear and drive selection levers are in amazingly good condition considering the age. Testament to the incredible build quality of these vehicles.

Mechanics

Reassuring and confident, this engine and drivetrain are ready for any terrain.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.3L, 4 cylinder engine starts well and immediately settles down to a steady idle. Emissions appear clear and the vehicle pulls well and drives smoothly.

Gear changes are precise and Kevin confirms all drive selections work as they should. The car has had regular attention over its life, including a replacement gearbox 2014.

Suspension and Brakes

Kevin advises the hydraulic brakes and the suspension all work as expected.

This model benefits from a wider track than the series 1 and introduced a new transmission layout that would remain in use until the introduction of the series III.

The Drive

Well, everything you would anticipate really. The ride is comfortable for a vehicle of this nature, it's sure footed, pulls strongly and offers plenty of torque. Check out the the "On The Road" video to share our experience of a test drive with Kevin.

Electrics and Other

All switches, buttons and levers appear in good condition and Kevin confrims everything works correctly to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

The epitome of the useable classic, as ready for work as the day it left the factory!

This a real opportunity to combine classic ownership with practicality and be ready for any challenge the seasons can offer. The very best of British engneering and a true icon, these Series IIA Land Rovers are becoming increasingly difficult to come by.

With its replacement galvanised chassis fitted in September, new dynamo, Weber carburettor and Powerspark electronic ignition it's ready for action. There is extensive paperwork with the vehicle including receipts for repair works and MOT certificates going back many years, a Haynes manual and recent bill of sale.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
