Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

A beautiful and iconic facelift overseen by Range Rover designers, the Series III continued to sell on every corner of the globe.

The Series III was first introduced to the world in 1971, and carried over from the Series 2 and 2a with a fresh face-lift. It featured a fully synchromesh four-speed gearbox, front-mounted headlights, stylish plastic grille and various mechanical improvements over its predecessors. These classic Land Rovers quickly gained a worldwide reputation for ruggedness and versatility, they were used for both emergency services and for military purposes.

This Series III 109 Truck Cab has seen a restoration, building the car from the chassis up, painting and wax-oiling underneath, as well as attending to any previous corrosion around the car. The restoration has taken around 3 years, and the result is this highly usable and practical classic, ideal for use on farms and around the countryside, not to mention it's now both MOT and Road Tax exempt.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love to keep busy with restoration projects, this restored Series III is a result of 3 years of work.

Steve purchased this 1981 Land Rover Series III 109 Truck Cab around 3 years ago from a good friend as a restoration project. He has great experience and a real passion for restoration and classic Land Rovers.

He's rebuilt the car from the chassis up, and taken extra care to attend any previous corrosion. View the mechanical photos and videos just to see how tidy underneath the car is. Also take a look at the history and paperwork to see all the previous MOTs and some receipts for various parts. Steve will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Featuring improved styling and unmissable front wing mounted headlights, this restored classic is a solid workhorse.

Wheels and Tyres

This 109 is running on the period correct long-wheelbase rims, all of which show in great condition, and were painted white during the restoration. These wheels are wrapped in Avon Range Master tyres, ideal for ploughing across any terrain. On some of the tyres there are signs of age in the form of cracks, however, all tyres including the full-size spare show a good amount of tread.

Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view of the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears good condition, the panels appear very straight with the gaps and shut lines looking good, especially for a Series III! We noticed a few little dents and knocks along the side of the truck, as you expect for a utility vehicle that is 41 years old. The bonnet offers mounts for a spare wheel, and Steve reports fitting a new rear cross member during the restoration.

The underside of the car looks good and free from any corrosion, as it's been attended to during the restoration, which can be seen in the mechanical photos. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The Series III is finished in an attractive dark green, which really suits the truck, the finish of the paint appears in good condition. Each panel shows even coverage.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off the wonderful Land Rover at its best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition across the car, along with the trim, which Steve has painted silver.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading. A front black bar has also been fitted, to help protect the car if it gets in to a bit of rough and tumble.

Interior

A modern plastic dash was a very practical change from the basic metal central dash.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of the car benefits from deluxe leather seats, which appear in great condition. The door cards and carpets look great too.

Steve has lined the floors with carpet and rubber mats for a very pleasant finish within the utilitarian classic.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in original condition, showing some of the usual cracking and wear that this model is known for, in line with the age and mileage of the vehicle.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic Series III Land Rover steering wheel is fitted which has had the central hub painted to match the exterior. The car also features its original gearstick, range selector, and hand break - all items appear in good usable condition in line with the rest of the car.

View the media pack to see the details.

Mechanics

Powered by a four-cylinder 2.25L inline OHV engine, with enough toque to plough across any terrain.

Engine and Gearbox

The Land Rover Series III is powered by an inline-4 2.25L offering the driver ~73BHP to tap into, coupled to 4-speed manual transmission with selectable 4-wheel drive.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting without fuss the first time. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay and underneath the car.

Suspension and Brakes

Steve reports suspension and brakes work very well, the car featured the classic leaf spring setup. The brakes have also been attended to during the restoration.

The Drive

The Land Rover Series III 109 is a great classic all-rounder, offering a practical utility vehicle with iconic looks. The Land Rover was previously used by military, police and emergency services worldwide for its ability to cover all terrains.

It offers a unique experience, one that'll make you smile wherever you decide to venture.

Electrics and Other

Simon reports all the electrics, buttons, gauges etc work within the car to his knowledge, apart from the central amps and voltage gauges.

History and Paperwork

Recently restored, UK RHD, sought-after Series III 109 in Truck Cab format - an ideal and practical classic workhorse, ready to be put to work again ~41 years later.

A very attractive and usable iconic classic, recently restored over the previous 3 years by the vendor Steve. Take a look at the mechanical photos to see how clean the underside of this car really is. The car comes with a small amount of paperwork in the form of MOT certificates and receipts. Take a look at the media pack to see the work carried out over the previous years.
