Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Practicality at its purest, this extensive nut and bolt restored Land Rover has been built with a "50th Anniversary" Defender inspiration in mind, what a result.

The Land Rover 90 is a go-anywhere off-road icon; utilitarian styling, rugged chassis, all important all wheel drive. It's the versatility of these "Defenders" that have endeared the model to country folk, farmers, vets, the military, and those who want a now timeless-looking 4x4.

This particular car has undergone a significant transformation in the current ownership, going from a bog standard 90, to what is now in effect a "50th Anniversary" inspired rebuild. Now finished in a lovely "Atlantic Green" with brown interior, the car has been upgraded to a 3.5L V8, paired to an automatic gearbox, and has had a proper body-off restoration actioned. Some choice upgrades like LED daytime running lights, modern hifi and with added sound deadening for the cabin, it makes this 90 a great value proposition resto-mod when you consider the price of the "50th Anniversary" Defenders.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Andrew the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It took me two years of hard work to get this Ninety ready, I've loved working on this project.

Andrew purchased the car 3 years ago, and has spent 2 years carrying out a full nut and bolt restoration of the car. The build was completed in May last year, and he's enjoyed putting just shy of 1,000 miles on it.

The work carried out was extensive: a full body-off restoration with the chassis repaired, welded, and then treated with anti-rust paint. All the body panels were taken back to full metal and then resprayed in Atlantic Green. All the fixings used were stainless steel and a closed-cell foam liner was used between all aluminium and steel interfaces.

The car was inspired by the 50th Anniversary, this example fitted with a Rover 3.5L V8 from a Discovery (with the option of running on LPG), along with the automatic gearbox. Take a look at the history and paperwork to see the restoration process and all the bills and receipts. Andrew will be happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Instantly recognised by everyone with its charming aluminium shell, this nut and bolt restored car presents in excellent condition.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with original Land Rover deep dish 5-spoke alloys, they are wrapped in Toyo Open Country A/T Plus tyres - you'll be able to plough across any terrain!

The wheels are finished in their original silver colour and appear in great condition on each corner, refurbished in line with the restoration. The tyres appear in excellent condition with lots of tread and are dated 2020 all around.

You'll also find mudguard flaps have been fitted behind each wheel of the car, and the side steps appear in excellent condition. Take a look at the photos and videos for a look yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears in excellent condition and has been given meticulous attention throughout the restoration.

The panels gaps and shut lines looking good, especially for a Land Rover like this. A new bulkhead has been fitted, any previous corrosion has been addressed. The car retains its original chassis and has been given extensive corrosion protection to ensure it will be good for miles and miles.

A galvanised front bumper is fitted and stainless steel fixing have been used across the whole car. The underside of the car looks to be free from any corrosion, which can be seen in the mechanical photos. When the car has been rebuilt, closed cell foam has been used between materials to prevent future corrosion.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

This Ninety is finished in the Land Rover colour of "Atlantic Green", which appears in excellent condition around the car, and really shows the amount of care which has gone into the restoration. Each panel presents a deep lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout.

The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition across the car, along with the trim. All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degradation.

The rear and alpine windows have been lightly tinted. As part of the work, the car has been upgraded to run with LED lights all round, including daytime running lights in the galvanised front bumper.

Interior

While keeping its original character, the interior has been upgraded to make this Land Rover much more comfortable and usable for all.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of the car looks just as you would expect from a recently restored example, Andrew has decided to keep the original dash, steering wheel, and dials which really boost the genuine character of this car.

The seats, door cards, and headlining look excellent. The car has been fitted with black/brown Masai vinyl seat covers with cream pipping. To make the car more usable for all types of driving, the doors and some other choice areas have been fitted with sound deadening during the restoration. This example will be equally at home as a "Chelsea tractor" as well as off-road. Take a look at the photos for a closer look at the interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears to be in original condition and shows very little wear in line with the rest of the interior. We did notice a very small mark on the top. The LPG controls have been neatly installed into the central console.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Lovely to see the original Land Rover steering wheel is fitted on this car. With the car being converted to an automatic, a custom housing and gaitor have been finished in the same vinyl as the seats, a nice touch to the smart cabin.

Mechanics

This 50th Anniversary Defender inspired rebuild has some choice upgrades in the form of a meaty 3.5L V8 paired to an automatic gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

This Land Rover Ninety is now running on a 3.5L Rover V8 with an automatic gearbox, the engine runs on petrol and LPG to make the V8 a more economical when needed.

The engine swaps from petrol to LPG (and back again) whilst running without issue. However, Andrew tells us it sometimes does not like cold starting on LPG. The LPG has not been recommissioned by an LPG certified technician and would benefit from a check over by an approved engineer.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting without fuss on the first request. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the very clean engine bay and underneath the car. The engine and drivetrain were of course rebuilt as part of this nut and bolt restoration.

Suspension and Brakes

Andrew reports suspension and brakes work very well, the brakes have been fully serviced with new master cylinders etc during the restoration.

As part of the restoration work, new coil springs, shock absorbers and bump-stops were fitted. New spring seats were welded in, along with new swivel balls and all internal swivel kits. Extensive to say the least.

The Drive

A classic which has been given a fresh lease of life. This 90 is an ideal all-rounder, it's a practical utility vehicle, used by the military and police worldwide.

With the upgrade to a V8 engine and automatic gearbox, it opens up this Land Rover to be used as a daily driver with ease over and above the obvious off-road ability this model has.

Electrics and Other

We're assured that everything on the car works as expected. The car is equipped with LED headlights with halos and indicators, a DAB/Bluetooth radio, neatly installed above the rear-view mirror, smart speakers are fitted above the box trim covering the LPG tank, and finger traps have been fitted for extra security.

History and Paperwork

A nut and bolt restored Land Rover, built to a high standard inspired by the Defender 50th Anniversary with a burbling V8 and automatic gearbox.

The car was inspired by the 50th Anniversary example with its Rover 3.5L V8 along with the automatic gearbox, both items from a Land Rover Discovery. With the prices of the anniversary Defender over £50,000, the work and quality of this build arguably make it a great value proposition.

The car comes with a great amount of paperwork in the form of part receipts from the rebuild. In addition, there is an extensive photo gallery that documents the rebuild, we have added lots but not all of the pictures of this work. The full gallery can be provided on request.

The work carried out included: a full body-off restoration with chassis repaired and welded, then treated with anti-rust chassis paint. All body panels were taken back to bare metal/primer and professionally resprayed. This 4x4 was rebuilt using all stainless steel fixings with a closed-cell foam liner between all the aluminium and steel interfaces.

Andrew will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Could you provide a bit more info on the engine and gear box. What is their history in terms of recent overhaul. Also is log easily removed if desired? Will it make a mess of the interior?
