Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

On-road or off-road, the 90 County has something for everyone, making it the perfect 4x4 capable of most tasks thrown at it.

The Land Rover 90 is a go-anywhere off-road icon; utilitarian styling, rugged chassis and all important all-wheel drive. However, the versatility of these "Defenders" has endeared the model to country folk, farmers, vets, the military, and those who want a now timeless-looking 4x4.

This particular 90 County Station Wagon is in original condition and has been part of the family for the past 23 years. However, in recent years the Land Rover has been used less and less, so little, in fact, it has spent five years unused in dry storage! These "County" spec cars are few and far between, and were a step up at the time in terms of coming fully carpeted and having seating for 4 in the rear.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Andrew the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This has been a fantastic vehicle - the whole family and I have enjoyed many great times and made some wonderful memories.

Andrew purchased the Land Rover 90 County over 23 years ago. In that time, it’s safe to say the vehicle has been used to its full potential. It has done everything Andrew has asked of it, from days out, off-roading, a workhorse, and even teaching the kids to drive in it!

The lack of use in recent years and a house downsize on the cards means that the Land Rover is being sold off to make some space. Please feel free to ask Andrew any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

With its rugged looks - the Land Rover is perfectly suited to country life.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels have been replaced for the 8-spoke Wella’s. These do have some small signs of corrosion, but nothing an afternoon’s DIY with a rattle can couldn’t sort out. The tyres were fitted in 2004 and have a good amount of tread remaining.

Also included with the sale is the original set of Rostyle wheels, which are really in need of some refurbishment as you'll see in the pictures, but they are salvageable.
Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Yes, there are a few dings and dents here and there, but this all adds to the charm and character of the classic 4x4. Let's face facts, parts are readily available should you wish to make it perfect, but that wasn’t the intention for Land Rovers; they were there to be used, and used is exactly what Andrew has done, having great fun along the way.

As you would expect, the underside has some light surface corrosion, but the main chassis section is very clean, with no obvious areas for concern immediately jumping out on typical areas like out-riggers etc. The bodywork itself is generally sitting very straight and true, there are some typical areas like the top of the bulkhead, hinges, bottoms of the doors etc that have corrosion present as captured in the video review and in the pictures.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior, for you to get a feel for the condition.

Paint

Finished in the original colour of what is believed to be "Ivory White", the paint is every bit as authentic as you can get. At 34 years old, there are some signs of surface corrosion to the vehicle, mainly around the edges, the bottom of the doors and wings. None of it looks to be excessive, but this would need to be investigated for a clearer picture. There is a small hole in the lower quarter panel just behind the driver's door.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show you the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves and for you to make your own minds up on the condition.

Glass and Trim

The windows all look to be in good order, with no noticeable scratches to be seen. There is perishing to the rubber seals in keeping with the age of the Land Rover.

The lights both to the front and rear are in good condition with no splits or cracks to the lenses.

Interior

Being the County model, carpets and material seats were a plush luxury in 1988 for a Land Rover.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the County model came with the more luxurious material trim as opposed to the vinyl seats in other 90s. These are in relatively good condition for the age, with just a small hole in the driver's seat and a tear in the vinyl backing; other than that, they would benefit from a deep clean to improve the overall appearance.

The rear seats can be folded up for the extra room. Some of the straps which hold these up have broken, not that they would be a difficult item to replace. The seats are generally in good condition, with just the underside of the bases slightly split where people have sat on them without putting the support leg down.

Also, another County feature is the carpets. These have some wear to be seen, and a good deep clean would improve the appearance.
Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard in a 90 is quite basic, but what is there is in good condition, with no damage to point out. The instruments are working as they should, with the odometer showing a reading of ~154,291 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel does have some wear to it, but again this is quite an easy item to find and replace second hand. The gear knobs are in good condition with the letters visible.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Fitted with a 2.5 litre petrol engine - with the flick of the key, the Land Rover fires into life with ease.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.5 litre starts as it should, with no untoward noises to be heard coming from the engine bay. There is quite a lot of dirt around the engine, but everything appears leak-free, and a good pressure washing would make it a completely different bay.

As you can see in our on the road video, the Land Rover moves through the gears as it should both in Hi and Low range. There is a slight noise from the thrust bearing on the clutch. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

Out on the test drive, there didn’t appear to be any noises coming from the suspension, and the Land Rover handles the field with ease as you would expect. There is a noise coming from possibly a ball joint which would need to be looked at. The brakes bring the County to a stop quickly.

The Drive

Due to having no MOT, we were restricted to driving the Land Rover in its natural habitat, which is off-road, maybe not the heaviest of off-roading conditions, but it wasn't tarmacked.

Electrics and Other

Some of the switchgear does have some wear to the icon pictures on the switches, but everything is reported to work as it should, and there is a Goodmans radio cassette fitted.

History and Paperwork

This County spec 90 is coming to market in very original and honest condition, it's all part of the rugged off-road charm rather than being a low mileage garage queen with lots of provenance.

The V5 is present, showing four previous keepers, and a number of previous MOT certificates tally up with the mileage. The excellent workshop manual could come in handy for some routine maintenance.

The vehicle is being sold with no MOT, as Andrew feels he does not have the time to carry out any bits of recommissioning that may be needed after it has been unused for ~5 years.

What a great base to start with, a 90 County Station Wagon. Yes, it would need some recommissioning, but the base is solid, and it runs well. Of course, there are some signs of patina, but really this just adds to the charm of an off-roader, don’t you think?

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, and V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
