Introduction

There’s just something about that 3.5 V8 - it’s got real character. Wherever you take it, people stop and smile, and it still feels like a proper classic, with loads of presence on the road.

I bought it a few months ago with every intention of sorting the bodywork and bringing it back to its best. Unfortunately, a new full-time job means I’ve not been able to dedicate the time it deserves. Reluctantly, I’d rather see it go to someone who can enjoy it than let it sit unused. It’s a usable classic with MOT until April 2026, so you can drive it and improve it as you go.

This listing was written from information supplied by XXXXX after meeting XXXXX the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

The timeless Range Rover Classic silhouette still looks fantastic today, with its boxy lines and purposeful stance making it instantly recognisable as a true British icon.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with its original alloy wheels, which are in good solid condition, but would benefit from a little cosmetic refurbishment if the new owner wants to smarten them up.

The tyres are in good condition, with plenty of tread left on them.

Bodywork

The bodywork is generally straight and complete, with all panels present. There are some age-related marks, dings, and areas of corrosion as expected on a 1980s vehicle.

Notable areas include little bits of rust along the lower sections, a dent to the tailgate, and some flakey paint running on the lower sections of the car.

Structurally it's sound, but as with most unrestored examples, it would benefit from ongoing attention or restoration if someone wanted to take it to the next level.

Paint

The original blue paintwork shows clear signs of age. The lacquer has peeled back in places, particularly on the bonnet, and there is fading on several panels.

Despite this, the finish still carries a charm and presents with an honest patina that suits a usable classic. A respray would transform the car cosmetically, but equally it can be enjoyed as-is without concern for keeping it spotless.

Glass and Trim

All glass is present and free from any major cracks or damage. There may be the odd light scratch or small chip in keeping with the vehicle’s age, but nothing that affects visibility.

The trim, seals, and plastic fittings are complete; though some areas show age-related wear and weathering.

Chrome and plastic finishes are consistent with a 1980s classic and would benefit from refurbishment if a sharper appearance is desired, but everything is serviceable as-is.

Interior

The interior is original and complete, offering the authentic late-80s Range Rover feel with plenty of classic character. It retains its original wood paneling on the doors.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are original grey cloth and present well overall, though the driver’s seat shows tearing to the bolster and some wear consistent with age.

The rear seats are in good condition with only light marks.

Original Carpet is intact and serviceable, currently covered with protective rubber mats.

A thorough steam clean would lift the interior further, but as it stands it is tidy and usable.

Dashboard

The dashboard is complete and generally in good order, with no major cracks.

Some trim pieces and plastics show age-related wear, and there are minor marks here and there, but overall it remains very presentable for its age.

Switchgear and dials are all in place, though some surfaces would benefit from a freshen-up.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear stick appear to be original. Both show wear to the finish from use over the years, but remain functional and in keeping with the car’s originality.

The car retains the classic Big Range Rover steering wheel.

Mechanics

The V8 fires up well and still delivers the unmistakable sound, smell, and character that makes these classics so special.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.5-litre Rover V8 is believed to be the original unit and starts readily usually after a few seconds. It runs well, pulls strongly, and sounds as it should, though as with any classic of this age, routine maintenance and tinkering will be part of ownership.

The manual gearbox selects gears as expected and is usable, though again it should be considered in keeping with a 1980s vehicle rather than modern refinement.

No known major issues, making it a good base to improve further.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is the standard Range Rover setup, which provides a comfortable ride. It feels serviceable and in line with the car’s age, though naturally there is some wear present.

The brakes operate correctly and stop the car as they should, but would likely benefit from a future refresh if the new owner wanted to optimise performance.

The Drive

The car starts without fuss and drives as expected of a usable classic. The V8 sounds great, pulls well through the gears, and the steering feels direct enough for a vehicle of this type.

It’s enjoyable to drive and gives that commanding Range Rover experience

Electrics and Other

The electrics are in working order to the best of my knowledge, with the usual switches, radio, lights, windows, sunroof and gauges functioning.

As with most classics, there may be the odd quirk, but everything essential operates as it should.

The car is fitted with a tow bar at the rear

History and Paperwork

This 1988 Range Rover Classic comes with a long MOT - to April 2026 - offering a rare chance to own a usable, road-ready example with strong future investment potential.

The car most recently passed its MOT on 24 April 2025 at 140,590 miles, with a clean pass and only minor advisories noted (corrosion to non-load bearing areas and brake disc back plates). The MOT is valid until 23 April 2026. While I don’t have a detailed stamped service history with the car, it has clearly been kept on the road and in use, which is always a positive with a classic of this age.”

I do not have a lot of invoices or receipts with the car, so buyers should assume limited history. That said, the vehicle has been in running order and recently tested, making it a solid usable base.

The sale includes the car as pictured, with its tow bar, spare tyre, fitted mats, and spare wheel. I also have a Brand New Waterproof Car Cover I will include. No personalized registration or additional spare parts are included.

However we’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID that matches the V5, and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPi that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

Viewings are welcomed, so please get in touch with us via the 'contact us' page - we just need to speak to you first on the phone, have you register on the site, and also send in valid photo ID before confirming a suitable time to visit.

Like all our auctions, if there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - the Buyer's Premium is not refundable in any instance, just like a traditional auction house.
