Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The Range Rover Classic - regarded as the world's first truly luxurious SUV; a timeless template created for all to follow.

The Range Rover was credited with creating a brand new market sector - the luxury off-roader.

When debuted in 1970, it only had three doors and a utilitarian interior. However, it's a combination of on-road comfort and off-road abilities made it such a hit. It was produced for a whopping 27 years and featured a V8 engine with an automatic transmission awarded for its quality.

This particular example has been owned by Chris for the previous 27 years and been dry stored for the 16 of them. A timewarp classic that really has been given the love and attention it deserves.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after liaising with Chris the owner.

Meet the owner

Meet Chris, a self-proclaimed classic Range Rover fanboy and Land Rover Owner magazine star.

Chris has owned this lovely Classic Range Rover Vouge EFi for the previous 27 years. He is the third owner and has done all servicing himself treating the car to regular oil changes and filters. He explains "that's why the car's engine and differential are in such good condition and runs very smoothly.".

In 2001 he had a new water pump, airflow meter, regulator pack fitted and has all the receipts for every piece of work carried out.

The car is totally original and in 2004 it was put on axel stands until March 2020 when the car received: new brake pipes; cleaned callipers; new brake fluid; new fluid and seals in the steering box; new seals and oil in the front swivel housings; complete service with new spark plugs; the roof lining and sunroof professionally retrimmed; a different original upper tailgate was fitted and finally new wax-oiled throughout.

Chris has really gone all out, bringing this car up to an incredible standard and ready for the new owner to enjoy; just as he has.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

A timeless boxy and utilitarian style which is recognized worldwide as the luxury SUV that started it all.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted to this Luxury 4x4 monster are unmissable three-spoke 16" classic Range Rover wheels with matching Michelin rubber all round.

The alloys are in great condition - the O/S rear alloy has some slight paint bubbling, but it's not visible until you get really close.

The off-road capable rubber also looks in great condition with lots of life left in each tyre.

Please view all the images of the exterior to assess the condition for yourself.

Bodywork

We really like the look of this bodywork on this classic Range Rover. Chris has been such as meticulous owner, he mentions he's probably spent more on cleaning products for the car than any work carried out.

As you can see from the photos, this car has really been cared for over the previous 27+ years. The shut lines across each panel look tight and even as you'd expect.

A timeless body shape that only gets better with age. Please view the exterior photos for a closer look at each panel.

Paint

Finished in Cairngorm Brown, we love how it stands out from the crowd for all the right reasons - it really compliments the body shape.

The paint looks even in finish and colour across the car. By looking at the finish you can tell how much Chris has cared for this car over his ownership.

Please take a look at the photos to see the paint up close.

Glass and Trim

The glass and trim are in excellent condition and look to match the mileage and age.

The glass looks free from damage and very clean all around. The trim and rubber seals look great too, maintaining their original black colour.

Please take a look at the images to see the trim and glass in finer detail.

Interior

A feast of wood, tan cloth and electric motors - a simple yet sophisticated cockpit.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of this car looks excellent, the cloth seats have held up really well over its short 32 years of use. Chris has just had the cars headlining retrimmed as well. We didn't notice any sagging or rips in the seats and carpets.

If we're being really particular, we did notice some wear to the rear N/S door cards, a small part of the vinyl covering is missing, however overall the interior is in excellent condition.

Please take a look through the interior photos to really appreciate this cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent condition and in line with the rest of the car.

Chris reports that all the dials, gauges, and electrics are working correctly and exactly as they should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Simple yet elegant, the steering wheel puts you in full control of the mighty 3.5L V8.

Both the gear stick and steering wheel look in great condition too - in line with its age.

Please see the images for a detailed view of both.

Mechanics

Mud-plugging ability doesn't come at the expense of refinement - a 3.5L 135bhp V8 gives you comfort on-road and hugely capable off-road potential.

Engine and Gearbox

Featuring Land Rovers robust detuned 135bph version of the Buick-derived Rover V8 3,528cc engine, this car is capable of ploughing through anything you throw at it. In '86 the carburettors were replaced by Lucas electronic fuel injectors, which improved both performance and fuel economy.

The Range Rover used permanent four-wheel drive, rather than the switchable rear-wheel/four drive option found in other Land Rover models. In 1985 the Range Rover was upgraded to the 4-speed ZF box coupled to an LT230 transfer box.

When Chris purchased the car back in '93 he took it in for its last dealer service where it was treated to a complete filter and oil change, since, Chris has done all the servicing himself with the receipts to show for it too. He's been meticulous during his ownership and maintenance.

Chris reports the engine and gearbox are working exactly as they should, the car has just been treated to new filters, fluids, oils, and spark plugs this winter.

Suspension and Brakes

Chris has also assured us that the car handles and stops exactly as it should too.

Over the past few months, new brake pipes have been fitted as well as stripping and cleaning the callipers.

While doing all of this, he applied a fresh coat of wax oil to the underbody.

Please view the images and photos to have a closer look under the car and see the suspension and brakes in more detail.

The Drive

Maybe you're looking for a city runabout, or perhaps you went to take the car on a European off-road adventure - this car manages to do it all. In style, grace, comfort and power.

We really love a Range Rover Classic, especially one in this condition. Chris reports that this car drives just as it should and he's really gone over and above keeping it in timewarp condition.

Electrics and Other

An impressive feast of electric features for the '80s. Chris has kept the car fully standard with the original heater, clock and radio.

The car is also fitted with a tow bar with full electrics.

Please take a look at the images for a closer look at the electrical features of this car.

History and Paperwork

A very lovely Range Rover Classic coming out of long ownership from a devoted enthusiast. Being a UK RHD example, in Cairngorm Brown makes this truly desirable classic.

Over Chris' long and loving ownership of this car, he's really given it the care and attention a classic like this deserves. Chris reports that it not only looks excellent, but it's also mechanically sound too.

The car has been featured in Land Rover Owners Internation magazine and Chris mentions "Anyone who knows of me and the vehicle will tell you how well I have loved and looked after her, it's is with great sadness I am parting company with this truly amazing example of the best of British. Unfortunately, times have changed and I just cannot have everything.".

The car features an automatic gearbox, central locking, tilt and slide steel sunroof, power-assisted steering, electric windows, tow bar with full electrics.

Well done crystal, worth every pound of that price. I would have been in the bidding but my financial fire-power is restricted past about £15k due to being owed a similar amount by the goon at North Yorkshire Classic who I bought a range rover off which turned out to be a complete pile of crap, was returned to him in October 2020 on day of collection (it only managed 15 miles before breaking down) and I haven’t seen it or my money since. If you look on his advert on car and classic you’ll see it , G reg… Read more »

Hi ive seen there are some trays on the dash in the centre is there any reason for them being there to hide something? if so are they glued on or screwed on?

also on the few underside photos ive noticed the chassis is heavily undersealed is there any reason for this and has it had prior welding work that is being covered?

Regards Ben

Hi Chris
Can you confirm that everything works on the car as it should electrical-wise – for example, windows, sunroof, locking, radio, lights etc etc.
Also, do you think it would be much of a job to remove the towbar (personal preference) and electrics without then upsetting the vehicle’s electrical systems?
Advice would be appreciated
Thanks
