Introduction

Matt Nolan
Professional Consigner

This is no ordinary 200 TDI, it's a proper nut and bolt restored passion project.

The Land Rover Defender is a go-anywhere off-road icon; utilitarian styling, rugged chassis and all important all-wheel drive. However, the versatility of these "Defenders" has endeared the model to country folk, farmers, vets, the military, and those who want a now timeless-looking 4x4.

This particular 90 was given a total transformation by the previous keeper, a retired Land Rover engineer. He got his inspiration from Arkonik, who create bespoke Defenders tailored to your specification. The vision was to build the perfect 4x4 whilst retaining the practicality, and we think you’ll agree this task has been well achieved. They have arguably created a "Defender" that is better than when it came off the production line.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matt after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love everything motoring, and over the years have been lucky enough to own cars from 205GTi's through to Jaguar XKR's.

Paul is the kind of enthusiast who has to have it all, his tastes in cars over the years really is as diverse as they come, his first special car being a Jaguar XJC when he was just 20 years old. He likes cars that are the best they can be, and so when Land Rover stopped production of the old Defender, he was keen to find a really good quality example.

This car has been fully rebuilt by the previous owner, a retired Land Rover engineer, over a 2 year period. Paul tells us, the former owners wife estimates that over ~2,000 hours have gone in to the rebuild, when you've studied the content we think you'll understand why. Using his 40 years of experience, he put in place preventative measures and upgrades to the typical issue areas, as well as a complete overhaul of the drivetrain, axles, brakes, clutch etc. After a year enjoying this car, Paul is now moving on to something different and so the car comes to auction. Please feel free to ask Paul any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The Defender has had everything done just right - attention to detail being the key word during this build.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16” wheels have been powder coated in gloss black to match the wheel arches, grille and bumper. These are in excellent condition with no damage to mention. The tyres are matching Rader Renegade and are in nearly new condition.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The car is in excellent condition and has had improvements such as the galvanised bulkhead, which has been etch primed, and Raptor coated to give even more protection.

Everything looks to align as it should with a nice equal panel gap for a Defender of this age. Everything looks to be still spotlessly clean, having only covered approximately ~1,000 dry miles since the rebuild. The canvas roof is also in as new condition and has the option to be removed, or roll up the windows for the summer months.

Onto the structural side of things, the chassis has been galvanised and also Raptor coated, there have been new inner wings fitted, and the tub floor has been replaced with new aluminium. It's worth noting that the car still has its original bulkhead and chassis which have been restored as mentioned. Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

After a full bare metal respray, the Defender has been finished in a colour used on Range Rover’s, which is "Grey Silver". The finish to the Defender’s paintwork looks to be in excellent condition. What's not painted in Grey Silver has been done in black gloss, which is a nice contrast against the silver.

Continuing the Gloss Black theme, there has been chequer plate fitted to the wing tops and bonnet. As you can imagine, there are no stone chips that we could see with so few miles covered.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off this wonderful 1991 Land Rover Defender 90 at its absolute best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in excellent condition with no scratches to mention. These have been replaced along with the seals, ensuring everything is just right.

Bringing a more modern light to the Defender, Wipro LED lights have been used throughout, giving a crisp light and significantly improving the original lighting system. Please see our detailed gallery showing the whole exterior.

Interior

Lucari leather seats offer all the comfort you need - Safety Devices hoops give the rear half the framework to support the roof.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Defender are high-quality Lucari leather, and yes, they are in excellent order, as you would expect from this level of build. The rear seats are also trimmed in the same, and these will fold up should you need a larger load area.

The front half has been carpeted with a full set of deep pile fitted carpets, and in the rear, there is carpet again, finished with a rubber mat to protect it.

Please see the interior gallery section for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dash is typical of a Defender but trimmed in leather, giving it a more luxurious look. The instruments are bright and clean, finished with aluminium bezels. They are working as they should, and the odometer has a reading of ~85,462 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has been replaced favouring a smaller MOMO Millennium, which is in excellent order. The gearknobs for the gears and hi-lo range have been fitted with aluminium items, to match the modernisation and upgrade of the interior.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

A matching numbers, fully rebuilt 200TDi engine is in the Defender - just run in at ~1,000 miles.

Engine and Gearbox

The Defender’s engine is reported to have a warranted mileage of just ~85,000, which is low for a defender of this age. However, even with such low miles, this hasn't stopped a complete rebuild from being carried out along with a new turbo. The Land Rover starts up as it should and is running perfectly with no untoward noises coming from the spotlessly clean engine bay.

The gear change is nice and smooth, and the vehicle pulls well through the gears. The front and rear differentials have been rebuilt with new gears, and the casings have been galvanised and powder coated. There have also been new prop shafts fitted with CV joints and swivels. The expenditure on the car has been significant, over £25,000 in receipts.

Suspension and Brakes

If you are replacing everything, it makes sense to also replace the brakes with all new parts, including the lines and hoses.

With all this work carried out, they are working as they should with no issues bringing the Defender to a safe stop. The suspension has also been renewed, and a complete set of poly bushes have been fitted to keep everything nice and tight.

The Drive

It drives like a Defender should do when it is new, not like a 30-year-old vehicle. The ride is excellent, as you can see and hear in our "On The Road" video. This is the ultimate 30-year-old Defender, only like new!

Electrics and Other

Inside, everything is reported to be working as it should. There has been an upgrade to a Sony touch screen head-unit allowing the easy connection of your mobile phone for hands-free and music streaming.

History and Paperwork

A vast collection of invoices come with the vehicle totalling over £25,000 - showing just how much work has gone into this transformation.

It's reported around ~2,180 man hours have gone into the restoration of this stunning "Defender", with the majority of the work carried out by a retired Land Rover engineer who was the perfect person to take on such a project. As we have already said, this has been a true nut and bolt restoration, which can be clearly seen in the quality of the finished vehicle. Galvanised steel, or powder coating and the prevention of rust and galvanic corrosion with Duraloc or a rubber membrane, the car was stripped down to its component parts, new internal components in the all of the drivetrain, axles, brakes, clutch etc.

The car has covered around ~1,000 miles since the completion, which has been done in dry weather, meaning it is still very fresh and ready to be enjoyed by the next lucky owner of pretty much what is a new vehicle!

We’ve done all include seller checks, including photo ID, and V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
