Introduction

Have we got a great lockdown project for you!

The Land Rover Range Rover was the world's first truly luxurious off-roader. It has a timeless body shape that still looks incredible on the roads today. It was built as a two-door model for its first 11 years until a four-door also became available in 1981.

This is the Vouge EFi variant that is powered by a 3.9L Rover V8 engine. In the early '80s the Range Rover's appeal drew a new demographic of buyer who wanted space, driving position, and off-road capability with the interior comforts and ride quality of a luxury saloon car. The Vouge variants featured matte-finished walnut door cappings, automatic gearbox, and electric windows.

We think this is an ideal candidate for a lockdown project. Importantly it's very straight, looks solid with good bodywork - a perfect base to start from. You can imagine how stunning it will look with a bit of work. Also, it could be a sound investment as these early examples are going up in value. Only a few weeks ago we sold a 1989 in great condition for just over £19k - bidding was fierce.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting the team at Prestige & Performance Centre, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Team at Prestige & Performance Centre know a thing or two about desirable iconic classics.

The Prestige & Performance Centre recently took this Range Rover Vogue EFi under their wing and since have been looking for an eager RR Classic fan to take over ownership of this desirable 4x4.

The car has very straight bodywork, it's running very well, and already has an LPG conversion fitted - it just needs a little love in places to bring it back to its former glory. It's an ideal candidate for a DIY mechanic.

Please take a look through all the content we've captured of the car, showing how solid it is and where a little attention is needed in other places.

Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Timeless good looks from this luxury SUV - the car that created a whole new market.

Wheels and Tyres

The car features its original 3-spoke range rover alloys that all look really good - around the wheels you'll notice some minor marks and some corrosion - most noticeable on the offside front alloy, however, the other wheels are great. One of the first jobs could be to get the wheels off and send them to a specialist to make them like new again.

The tyres look good and each tyre has a lot of tread left.

Please take a look a the photos and videos for a detailed view of the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this car is really straight, all the panel gaps are tight and true. The wheel arches have been repaired and solid on each corner of the car - they need finishing off and spraying.

If we are being really picky there was a little bit of surface corrosion on the driver's door and on the rear bumper.

There are also some small holes in the front wheel arches that are not structural.

Overall a great place to start for some light restoration on the exterior.

Please take a look at the photos videos for a detailed tour of the bodywork.

Paint

Finished in a deep red, the paint on this car looks even in colour and finish across each panel. Elbow grease could be the key to getting the paint back to life without the need to action a full respray.

When getting really close, we noticed some minor scratches that don't appear to be too deep at all and would come out nicely with a little polishing and attention.

Again a great place to start for a running project this summer/winter

Glass and Trim

The glass around the car looks really good, no cracks, chips, or discolouration was observed on our visit.

The trim likewise is in good condition - the rear back plastic bumper has a small crack on the offside.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of the exterior.

Interior

The interior of this Range Rover Classic is a sophisticated and classy place to be, with a high driving position and luxurious comfortable seats.

Seats and Carpets

The grey cloth seats in this car look in really good condition for the age and mileage. There was a slight tear on the driver's seat, however, all the bolsters and seat covers look really good; especially in the rear.

The carpets are clean and in great condition.

As common with these cars, the headlining is sagging and would require some attention to bring it back to showroom condition. The armrest is a little tired along with some small parts of trim missing inside the car.

Again, not much work / money is really required to bring this interior back up to scratch.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed interior tour.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks inline with the age and mileage of the car. Range Rovers of this age are very prone to cracks in the dashboard and we also noticed one air vent cover was missing on our visit.

Overall a lovely interior which would look really nice with some minor attention.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheels looks in excellent original condition and would not require any restoration.

The gearstick is a similar story, with a nice driver-focused layout inside.

Please view all the images of the interior to assess the condition for yourself.

Mechanics

On-road comfort and luxury with lots of off-road potential - perfect for absolutely any road trip you desire.

Engine and Gearbox

The reliable and robust 3.9L Rover V8 is installed in this Vogue, it has an increased displacement of 3,947CC to cope with any off/on-road situation that stands in its way.

The Range Rover used permanent four-wheel drive, rather than the switchable rear-wheel/four drive option found in other Land Rover models. In 1985 the Range Rover was upgraded to the 4-speed ZF box coupled to an LT230 transfer box. In '86 the carburettors were replaced by Lucas electronic fuel injectors, which improved both performance and fuel economy.

A previous owner had an LPG gas system fitted, further expanding the fuel economy.

Please watch our cold start video to see the car starting from cold with no issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The "Hard Dash" classics are preferred by collectors and restorers for their more robust spring suspension and lack of electrical gremlins.

Please view the images and photos to have a closer look under the car and see the suspension and brakes in more detail.

The Drive

Perhaps you're off to the shops, or maybe you're off on a European off-road adventure - the Range Rover Classic has you covered no matter what situation you're in - assuring you'll get to any destination in style, comfort and grace.

Electrics and Other

The car is very well equipped for any adventure, a previous owner has fitted an aftermarket stereo and a 4x 12v lighter adapter.

Please take a look at the images and videos for a detailed tour of this car's exterior and interior.

History and Paperwork

The perfect running Range Rover Classic project that you've always dreamed of - a UK RHD example with an LPG conversion - you're already off to a flying start.

This car is a great starting place for anyone looking for a Range Rover Classic project, the car is running and the garage owners do think it will pass MOT, however, it would benefit from a little TLC in areas for an MOT pass with no advisories.

We couldn't think of a better project to take on during the current climate.
