Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

An unmistakably timeless shape, the Land Rover Defender has been around for decades.

The Defender name didn't come around until 1992, however the shape has been present since 1948. First known as the 'Land Rover' it was originally built as a utility vehicle aimed at farmers and industry and then picked up by military. The 90 first made an appearance in 1984, the short wheel base version, 90 denotes this; meaning 90" wheelbase. The Defender is loved the world over, from farmers to trendy city folk, for good reason to as it can handle almost any terrain imaginable as well as looking incredibly stylish.

This Defender 90 Pickup retaining the genuine Defender 200Tdi engine, has recently benefited from a nut and bold overhaul. It is now finished in "Corris Grey" and presents in excellent condition, the company that actioned the restoration having known this car for a long time.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is a very cool Defender, would you believe it, I was lucky enough to win this in a competition!

David has always loved the looks of the Defender and has always wanted one. After a few drams of whiskey he entered a giveaway for this 90 Pickup and won it. As much as he loves the looks, he doesn't really have a need for it and comments "Driving a Defender means you don't need to go to the gym, it's a workout in itself!".

The previous owner actioned the restoration and upgrade of this car to the level you see today. It had been in their ownership for some time, and we've been told the car was in good shape before the work was actioned. Some professional welding was required to the chassis rail as is often the case, and then it was professionally steam cleaned and treated with Dinitrol inside and out to ensure longevity. David will do his best to answer questions about the car in the comments section below, keep in mind though that he hasn't had it long.

Exterior

Recently restored this Defender looks mean, it's utilitarian chic and would look equally at home off-road as in the city.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels have been given a fresh refurb, finished in anthracite matching the grey paintwork on the body. We didn't notice any chips or kerb marks on the wheels. The 16" wheels are wrapped in huge knobbly BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A tyres, which looked to have plenty of life left in them.

Please take a look at the photos and videos below to make your own judgement on the condition of the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

Body panels on the car appeared to be in good condition on the whole, we did notice a couple of dents on the sills just under both doors, with the one under the drivers door more prominent with a couple of scratches.

The body has a lot of character with rivet details on most panels, along with wide wheel arches painted black. We only noticed some visible surface corrosion on the latches of the rear tailgate which is typical.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint looked in great condition, as you would expect after being resprayed in April 2021 in "Corris Grey". The car was originally red, a new V5C is in the post to reflect this change.

We only noticed a couple of scratches on the driver side sill under the door and the latches on the rear tail gate have rubbed away some paint around them, this is us just being picky really though.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the paint for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the car looked in great condition too, the windscreen was replaced during the refurbishment. We couldn't see any chips or cracks in any of the glass. This Defender benefits from a 1-piece rear window rather than the standard 2-piece.

Trim also looked to be in great condition too, with no visible signs or rust on either bumper. The car featured some diamond plate either side of the bonnet. David mentioned the only thing missing from the car after the refurb is a bonnet stand, this should be an easy fix we believe.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to review the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

During refurbishment, diamond quilted leather was added to the seats, roof liner and door cards, modernising this early Defender.

Seats and Carpets

Complimenting the exterior, grey diamond quilt leather has been used on the seats, roof and doors. The seats looked to be in great condition, with no tears spotted in the leather.

The Defender doesn't feature carpets but has a wipe clean floor instead, which seemed to be in good condition too, with only a few marks noted, another part of the in depth refurb the car has received.

Take a look at the photos and video below to view to condition of the seats and floor for yourself.

Dashboard

The traditional Defender dashboard is still intact. In addition a modern Sony radio has been fitted which comes with USB functionality. The dashboard looked to be a bit dusty in some hard to reach places, ie gaps between buttons/dials, not a big issue, just a bit of detailing required.

Please view the photos and video below to make your own mind up.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic Land Rover steering wheel takes pride of place in front of the driver, it seemed to be in good condition, with slight wear consistent with the age and milage of the car.

The Defender features both a high-range and low-range gearbox as well as a diff-lock, for all the on and off-road needs. We did notice a slight bit of rust on the gearstick.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to make up your own mind about the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick.

Mechanics

At its heart, this Defender has a 2.5L TDI engine, providing plenty torque to get you out of any situation.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting at first attempt, the engine seemed to be running smoothly with no untoward noises detected. On a quick drive we observed the gears going in smoothly, even reverse. We didn't hear any crunching or whining coming from the box.

Take a look at the cold start/on the road video to see and hear the engine and gearbox in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The Defender sits high giving plenty of ground clearance for off-roading, the refurb fitted new suspension front and rear. Springs and shock absorbers looked in good condition all round.

The brakes seemed to bite well while on our short drive with David, we didn't notice any squeaking or any other untoward noises either.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to see the condition of the suspension and brakes.

The Drive

We only took a very short drive with David around his private property as the car was not taxed, however in this short time we did some manoeuvres simulating driving around town. We didn't notice any unusual noises and everything seemed to be working well.

Please take a look at the on the road video to make your mind up and have a look at the underside photos to see the uprated/ heavy duty steering components.

Electrics and Other

During the refurb new LED lights were fitted to the car, these were in working order as you can see in the photos. Many other electrical parts were fitted during the refurb too, we were assured by David that everything was in working order to his knowledge.

This Defender has a safari snorkel fitted.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market with the genuine Defender 200Tdi engine having been restored last year, there's an extensive list of what was actioned on this Defender 90.

With a restoration and upgrade actioned on this car in 2021, this is where the value lies in what was already a solid foundation. In the paperwork section you'll see a list of all the major items that were refurbished and replaced, and it's worth noting that the running gear was all tested as part of the restoration after strip down. The car has been finished to a high standard as you can see pictured, and looks great with many styling upgrades inside and out added to this early Defender.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and HPi.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
