Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The Defender 90 Station Wagon offers the best of both worlds, combining genuine off-road ability with the practicality of ample cabin space.

The Land Rover Defender 90 is a four-seat, go-anywhere icon, with its rugged bodywork and permanent 4x4 drive, the Defender has long been admired for its ability to handle challenging terrain. Its versatility has made it a trusted choice for country folk, farmers, vets, the military, and enthusiasts seeking a timeless, purpose-built utility vehicle.

This particular example is powered by the iconic 2.5-litre 4-cylinder 300Tdi engine and has benefitted from a full restoration carried out by Project Leven. Please check out the History and Paperwork section to see how much effort has gone into this restoration and the parts fitted, e.g. new galvanised chassis and doors, new clutch, new suspension components, LED light upgrade and so much more.

It has been in the care of its current custodian for just over a year, during which time it has been well maintained and serviced - the excellent condition presented today reflects the attention it has received over the years and particularly during the restoration.

We think that if you're seriously in the market for one of the best 90s out there, then maybe you've just found it here.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Flyn the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Fully restored in 2023 and equipped with large off-road tyres, this Defender has proved more than capable on Cornish roads and beyond.

Flyn, the current owner, has thoroughly enjoyed his time with this Land Rover Defender 90 over the previous year - he's had the car in his dry carport, reserved for local trips out which the recent mileage and condition clearly reflects.

Flyn was hoping to keep this example to enjoy for many years; however, he is now looking to change to a Defender 130, mainly for more space and the opportunity to convert it into a campervan.

Flyn will be on hand to answer any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

A timeless and utilitarian design that has been admired for decades, and one which continues to hold strong appeal today.

Wheels and Tyres

The white 16” Wolf wheels suit this car well, giving it a touch of utilitarian appeal. During our visit, the wheels appeared well cared for, with no obvious damage to the rims.

The tyres were replaced during the restoration with Goodyear MT 4x4s - dated 2018.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Land Rover and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Land Rover looks to be in great condition, with the panel gaps around the car appearing to align very well. During our visit, we did not spot any obvious dings or dents.

Project Leven have clearly spent a lot of time and money restoring the body and you can see a full list of items addressed in the History section below, for example it's had a new Marsland galvanised chassis and doors.

On the underside it has been Lanoguarded, Flyn told us it was first thing he done when he go the Defender.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in Keswick Green and Alpine White, the paint shows an even coverage and consistent colour across each panel.

Being super picky, we did notice a small patch of wear on the bonnet.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Defender 90 also presents well and is consistent with the standard of the restoration.

During our visit, we did not notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration.

The window seals also appear in excellent condition and in keeping with the overall quality of the car.

The bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds all appear in excellent condition as well.

image

Interior

Inside, the Defender 90 delivers a simple yet practical cabin, staying true to the model’s original character.

Seats and Carpets

The black vinyl seats have retained their shape very well since the restoration, as you would expect from careful ownership.

The same applies to the door cards, which also present well.

We did notice that both seat belt webbings are slightly frayed, something highlighted in the latest MOT.

For a detailed view of the cabin, please take a look at the extensive media.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in a black vinyl finish and presents five dials in front of the driver.

The dashboard in this Defender 90 shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs.

The odometer showed a reading of ~131,129 miles during our visit.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A Land Rover steering wheel is fitted and is in excellent condition, consistent with the standard of the restoration.

The black gear stick also presents nicely.

For a closer look, refer to the image gallery for detailed photographs.

Mechanics

Engineered to tackle a wide range of terrain, the Defender has earned its reputation as a true off-road champion in its class.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.5L 300Tdi engine from Land Rover is regarded as a reliable unit. On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed well on the road - the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Flyn reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual gearbox transferring power to the wheels.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the Defender and the smart engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in good condition, providing a smooth journey on the sweeping Cornish lanes.

During our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a 4x4 car from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

image

The Drive

An extremely fun and enjoyable drive is offered - Flyn has loved using the car for road trips around Cornwall over the past year.

The engine fired up the first time with no issues to report.

On the road with Flyn the car felt tight, exhibiting plenty of power to navigate the road and we didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

image

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, however Flyn reports that all of the electrics are functional and operational, aligning with the overall condition of the car.
