The iconic and extremely practical off-road vehicle of choice worldwide - the Land Rover Defender.

The vehicle began life as the British equivalent of the Second World War derived (Willys) Jeep and quickly gained a worldwide reputation for ruggedness and versatility.

The original car used a steel ladder chassis and aluminum alloy bodywork and is still being produced in developing countries despite the arrival of the relaunched Defender (L663.) The Defender incorporated significant changes compared to its predecessor, such as adopting coil sprints, lockable center diffs along with a modernised interior.

This example packs a punch with its 2.5-litre Diesel Turbo inline-4 engine and can get out of any sticky situation with its new Rhino front-mounted winch - it's a driving machine and not a garage queen.

Meet the owner

It's an amazing car but it's not a garage queen, as I bought this example to use around the local area and to do jobs in - it ticked that box perfectly.

Mike has really enjoyed his time owning this Defender, but due to health, he was not able to use it as much as he was hoping, and since ownership has stored the car in his covered garage for safekeeping.

Due to lack of use, Mike has decided to part with the car and hand it over to a like-minded Defender enthusiast to enjoy.

Exterior

The iconic and charming aluminum body will always look good in any situation.

Wheels and Tyres

This 4x4 off-road monster is fitted with 16" 5-spoke 'Boost' Defender alloys, all of which appear in excellent condition all around.

The wheels are wrapped in Continental Cross Contact, which has a great amount of tread left.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears in line with the age and mileage of the car, and in good condition with a few areas which could be improved. The panels appear straight with the gaps and shut lines looking good. There is damage to both front wings, most noticeable on the offside.

There is some light corrosion to the inner door jams and some light signs of bubbling in areas across the car.

Paint

Finished in an elegant Coniston Green, a suitable colour for this iconic British motor - the paintwork appears generally in good condition around the car.

There are a few scuffs and marks which would benefit from a light retouch, but this Defender is a true practical 4x4 is ready to be enjoyed.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition across the car, along with the trim.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading.

Interior

A simple and very usable cabin area, with space for three up front and four in the rear.

Seats and Carpets

Cloth seats are fitted for a comfortable ride - they present in very good condition throughout. The driver's righthand bolster is slightly losing shape, very common for defender seats, and an easy fix.

The car has rubber floor mats, as you'd expect for a utility vehicle, all of which are very clean.

Overall in good condition, and fitted with a central third seat.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in original condition and looks good, in line with the age and mileage of the vehicle.

The car is fitted with its original Land Rover radio system and Mike reports everything is working on the dash to his knowledge.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Land Rover steering wheel is fitted and looks in good condition. The gearstick and range selector also look in great condition and in line with the rest of the car.

Mechanics

Take on any terrain in the versatile Defender 90 and the new winch will help you get out of any sticky situation.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by the mighty 2.5-litre Diesel Turbo turbodiesel I4. The 300tdi has an identical bore and stroke but with many new components including conrods a, coolant pump, a revised exhaust manifold and a turbocharger. The newer 300tdi features lower noise and vibration levels than the 200, it's DIY friendly and bulletproof if maintained and driven properly.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting without fuss the first time.

Suspension and Brakes

Mike reports suspension and brakes are fully working, mentioning a comfortable ride with stopping on-demand performance.

In 1983 the switch from leaf spring to coil spring suspension was a key part of the Defenders' success. It offered improved off-road ability, load capacity, handling, and ride comfort.

The Drive

The 90 is the ultimate all-rounder, it's practical and spacious. The 90 offers a unique experience, one that'll make you smile wherever you decided to venture.

With the large storage space, the car is ideal for hauling large items and people, with 7 seats fitted.

Electrics and Other

Mike reports all the electrics, buttons, and knobs etc work within the car to his knowledge. Also, the car has a new winch fitted too, perfect for this workhorse, or just looking the business.

History and Paperwork

A lovely Defender 90 example, finished iconic Coniston Green, the Defender will always have a cult following.

The car comes with lots of service history, MOT certificates, and receipts. The car currently does not have a valid MOT and will require one to be road legal. In Mike's ownership, he's fitted a winch to this Defender, perfect for those practical jobs or helping friends in need.
