Launched in 1994, 24 years after the previous model was released and came just after the takeover from BMW, who had nothing to do with the development of the P38, but they took a keen interest in it. The next-generation Range Rover offered more equipment and luxurious trim and was there to put their mark at the top of the SUV market.
No longer just a 4x4, it was Wolfgang Reitzle, the man in charge of Land Rover, that saw the potential in making the expensive luxury SUV, with various bespoke features such as a full leather interior, different wood trim options and, for the first time and quite mind-blowing at the time, TV screens in the headrests connected to a VHS video player. Some fantastic options brought the total price to over £72,000 for a fully loaded Range Rover. Definitely the top of the SUV market!

Hi Mike, quite impressed with your R/R – a couple of questions – I note a replacement short engine was fitted in 2007 which appears to have only done about 20K miles – do you know what happened with the original engine? In 2009 it appears the vehicle was laid up for approx 15 years – any details about this please? Eg, dry stored, used occasionally, or just left parked?

Hi Mr Reliable, sorry for the few days delay in replying as I have been away. When I purchased the vehicle I didn’t ask the question regarding the location of the engine so I cannot confirm the whereabouts. In regards to the storage whilst it was off road, it had been in a secured storage and I was told that the gentlemen worked away a lot on business but in the end he reluctantly decided to sell the vehicle. From my own observation, I would imagine it was professionally stored due to its excellent condition. Hope this answers your queries.

Hi again Mike, thanks for the reply – when I asked what happened with the original engine, I meant what happened to it mechanically, not where it ended up, lol. I meant, what was the reason with the old engine that a replacement short engine was fitted, and additionally, was this short engine a new, factory supplied one or a second hand one? Just trying to determine the mileage the replacement has covered.

I’ve looked into the folder with all the paperwork and investigated further. There is no information regarding why the short engine was replaced other than prior invoices there were some oil leaks so I am not able to confirm.
I have found the invoice for the works carried out on 11th may 2007. The total bill was £3,505.26. The short engine part alone was £2,098.55. I have rung a local Land Rover specialist and they are of the opinion that in 2007 that price would have been a factory part.
I have rung the firm that carried out the works and they are no longer trading.
The invoice does not state the mileage but on the information as shown on the mot the work was carried out between 113,000 and 119,000 miles.

Hi again Mike, thanks for the further info regarding the short engine – as estimated previously, it puts the mileage since fitted in 2007 and somewhere between 15-20K miles. I note that an LPG conversion has been fitted, and the tank for this occupies the spare wheel well – is there therefore an actual spare wheel available with the vehicle, or has it been lost in history? It would be my intention to remove/discard the LPG conversion as I have no interest in it.
I don’t live far from you Mike and might like to take a viewing if possible,

Hi Brian, yes I can confirm we have a spare wheel and good tyre that matches the set.
I agree if I was carrying on with the improvements with the vehicle, that would be my intention to remove the lpg (good call).
