Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Fancy a spot of luxurious on or off-roading, the 4.6 litre Range Rover will tackle whatever you throw at it.

Launched in 1994, 24 years after the previous model was released. The launch came just after the takeover from BMW, who had nothing to do with the development of the P38, but they took a keen interest in it. The next-generation Range Rover offered more equipment and luxurious trim and was there to put their mark at the top of the SUV market.

No longer just a 4 x 4, it was Wolfgang Reitzle, the man in charge of Land Rover, that saw the potential in making the expensive luxury SUV, with various bespoke features such as a full leather interior, different wood trim options and, for the first time and quite mind-blowing at the time, TV screens in the headrests connected to a VHS video recorder (remember those). A TV video package would come in at an eye-watering £9,500 option, and the total price would be in the region of £58,000 for a fully loaded Range Rover. Definitely the top of the SUV market!

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Brian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I had an original classic Range Rover, I love the commanding driving position.

Brian has owned the Japanese import 1999 50th Anniversary Range Rover for just a few months. Also owning a classic Jaguar and a daily car, the Range Rover was brought because it was easier to get in and out of than the Jaguar.

Unfortunately, one of the cars needs to be sold. Although Brian loves both cars, it is the Range Rover which has drawn the short straw. He's given the car a full service himself that included; oil and filter, fuel filter, air and cabin filters and spark plugs. If you have any questions about the car, Brian can answer in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in the lovely Atlantis Blue, the P38 presents in nice condition in line with age and mileage.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are the original five-spoke alloys. These are in very good condition with very few marks on the faces. One of the centre caps is missing, but it is an easy item to source and replace Brian tells us.

Brian has replaced the front tyres and has fitted Pirelli’s after the car was given an advisory on the last MOT. The rear tyres look to be in good condition, with a good amount of tread remaining. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Walking around the P38, the Range Rover looks to have had an easy life. There are no dings or dents that are obvious, and the shut lines are equal and matching. There are also no signs of any corrosion or blistering to the body and the underside looks great too.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Being the 50th Anniversary, the P38 was finished in the special colour of "Atlantis Blue". Sadly the roof does have significant UV damage to the paint as pictured, and there do look to have been some areas which have been touched up over the years, but generally, the Range Rover presents very well. Of course, there are the usual stone chips you would expect on a vehicle of this age, and there are also a few chips on the rear driver’s side quarter panel.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in good condition, with no apparent scratches noted. The window seals also appear to be in good order.

The headlights are free from any chips or splits. Brian has fitted a new set of wiper blades to the washers as part of his service. The rear lights are in good condition with no damage. The front grill and corresponding trim is loosing its paint as pictured.

Interior

Full leather and walnut - would you expect anything else for a luxury 4x4.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in "Parchment" colour leather, the electric seats in the Range Rover are working correctly, and the leather is in good condition with just a small amount of age-related wear and creasing. In addition, the door cards on each door are in good condition with no damage.

The carpets are in good condition throughout, with no signs of age. Inside the boot is a genuine load liner, and lifting this reveals the spare wheel, which is in excellent condition and doesn’t look to have ever touched the tarmac, or even a field. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in great condition; the only wear we spotted was some on the walnut fascia around the armrest and to the tip of the handbrake lever. The instruments are working correctly. Brian has fitted an MPH face to the odometer, but the mileage is ~79,102, which is in Kilometers, or ~49,151 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original half black leather and walnut steering wheel is in good condition. There is some slight wear to the lettering on the buttons, but they are reported to work correctly. The gear knob is in good condition with no apparent wear to it.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

With 4.6 litres of V8 greatness - there’s not much the Range Rover couldn’t cope with.

Engine and Gearbox

The V8 fires up without hesitation and sounds fantastic, with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay. Brian has recently performed a comprehensive service to the Range Rover, which included a set of spark plugs and fuel filter.

The automatic gearbox has an effortless change as the V8 pulls strongly through the gears, and just like the engine, no strange noises come from the transmission. Watch the video to both see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

Fitted with air suspension, this works correctly as expected. On the road, there are no knocks or bangs, and everything appears to be in good condition. The brakes are said to be in good order, and looking at the discs, there doesn’t appear to be an excessive lip. Brian reports these stop the P38 in a straight line and in good time.

One bonus about a low mileage car coming from Japan is the condition of the underside. They don’t use salt on the roads, resulting in much less in the way of corrosion.

The Drive

The P38 Range Rover is a fantastic choice for any 4x4 fanatics. They offer a luxurious form of transport, but can easily be used as Land Rover intended on or off-road, and rest assured you will have a fantastic time.

Electrics and Other

Inside the Range Rover, the switchgear looks to be in good condition and is reported to be working correctly by Brian. The windows and sunroof all operate as you would expect; the only thing we did spot was the air conditioning; although it does blow cool, it could possibly benefit from a re-gas.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

With a recent service actioned and recent MOT, this low mileage 50th Anniversary Range Rover is looking for a new home.

The Range Rover started life in Japan, where it resided for the first 17 years of its life, and since coming to the UK in 2015, it has been owned by three keepers.

This is an excellent opportunity to own a ~49,151 mile 50th Anniversary Range Rover in the desirable "Atlantis Blue", perfect for any 4x4 enthusiast.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
