Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The off-road icon that requires no introduction - practical and versatile enough for any adventure over any terrain.

The Defender remained in production for a whopping 33 years and hardly changed over that time, it boasts unrivalled off-road abilities with a rugged charm loved by so many.

Aluminium bodied and a 2.5L turbo-diesel engine with a permanent 4x4 drive, no obstacle will be a challenge. It's the versatility of these Defenders that have endeared them to country folk, farmers, vets and the military alike.

This Defender is owned by off-road enthusiast Dan. He also works for Jaguar Land Rover and knew exactly what he was looking for when he was in the market for a TD5 4 years ago. A car that's been used with ~153,000 on the clock, this example has been completely restored and was stripped down to its original chassis before being rebuilt from the ground up. This car, with a "15P" engine, has had some subtle modifications over the years from previous owners to now in effect make it a "County" specification.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Dan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always been charmed by the Defender and Land Rovers with their rugged capabilities, I can't image my life without one, so I'm now in the market for Series 2.

Dan has always loved Land Rovers and especially the iconic Defender. He currently works for Jaguar Land Rover. He tells us since owning the car "I've had years' worth of adventures, owning the Land Rover is all about the thrill of being able to get anywhere and everywhere along with the raw and honest drive, which just adds to the whole experience".

Dan reports no major modifications have been carried out during his ownership, just reupholstering the headliner along with fitting wooden alpine inserts. He also reports the rear shocks have been upgraded. Take a look at the history and paperwork to see all the work carried out during the full restoration before Dan's purchase.

"As a Land Rover fan, I am only selling this Defender to fund the buying of another Land Rover as I couldn’t imagine my life without one. I’m hoping to get a Series 2 which I could take to shows as a historical vehicle”. Dan will be happy to answer any of your questions about the Defender in the comments below.

Exterior

Iconic looks, the heritage is clear to see in the utilitarian lines that have remained with the car since 1948.

Wheels and Tyres

The car if fitted with black Modular wheels which appear in great condition on each corner of the car. The front Modulars are wrapped in the new style BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tyres dated 2018. You'll find the older style on the rear wheels, dated 2014.

All the tyres appear to have a great amount of tread, take a look at the videos and photographs for a closer view.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears in great condition for the age and mileage of the car. The panels appear very straight with the gaps and shut lines looking good, especially for a Defender!

The underside of the car looks good and free from any major corrosion (mainly just surface), which can be seen in the mechanical photos. We noticed a very small area of corrosion beginning to form on the rear cross member, which you would want to catch early.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in what we believe is "Stornoway Grey" which really suits the shape of the car. The finish of the paint appears in great condition around the car and really shows how much attention it's received. Each panel presents a deep lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout.

We did notice some very light scratches in line with the age and mileage. The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition across the car, along with the trim. All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degradation.

Chequer plate has been fitted across the car and painted to match the bodywork, we did notice a few scuffs to the front bumper.

Interior

An extremely practical cabin, this example has been given tasteful upgrades in the form of Corbeau seats and rear benches for additional passengers.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of the car looks just as you would expect for an extensive rebuild. The car is fitted with leather Corbeau reclining bucket seats, which have low-side bolsters, making it easy to climb in and out. They are a great fit and were perfect for the "green laning".

The seats, door cards, headlining and Land Rover rubber mats look great. Soundproofing has been fitted throughout, along with rear bench seats and seat belts.

Dashboard

The dashboard is fitted with the later style central column and appears in good condition in line with the rest of the interior.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A Mountney sports steering wheel is fitted along with its silver gearstick, and range selector - all items appear in great condition in line with the rest of the car.

Mechanics

A real performer on or off-road thanks to the 15P 2.5L TD5 turbo diesel that pulls like a train.

Engine and Gearbox

The Td5 was Land Rovers last in-house diesel. It proved a great success after buyers' initial fears of electronic engine control subsided. The engine produced 122BHP, but its real power was serious torque at low revs - ideal for ploughing through the green lanes. This is the desirable '15P' engine which has a different cylinder head design and better emission figures.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting without fuss the first time. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay and underneath the car.

Suspension and Brakes

In 1983, the switch from leaf spring to coil spring suspension was a key part of the success. It offered improved off-road ability, load capacity, handling, and importantly ride comfort.

Dan reports the car was fitted with new springs and swing arms when he purchased the car, he's replaced the rear shocks and mentions the rear driveshaft is an updated one-piece. The car also has metal rear inner arches.

The Drive

Dan reports a very enjoyable ride in Defender with the Td5 offering power to plough across any terrain with the suspension and brakes creating an enjoyable ride.

The Defender never fails to put a smile on your face, wherever you venture.

Electrics and Other

Dan reports all the electrics, buttons, gauges etc work within the car to his knowledge. The windows have been updated to be all-electric.

History and Paperwork

A solid and very attractive UK RHD example that has been rebuilt from the ground up, coming with the desirable 15P TD5 engine, and some tasteful modifications to upgrade the interior specification.

The car comes with a solid amount of paperwork in the form of part receipts from the rebuild and work carried out in the past.

The work carried out includes: a full body-off restoration down to chassis, all body panels have been professionally resprayed. This 4x4 has been given a make-over in the cabin as well as the exterior. Some of the restoration work and new parts fitted include: stripped down to the chassis, galvanized and full-respray, no welding carried out, brand new leather Corbeau reclining bucket seats, pioneer front speakers, new springs and swing arms, new seals, LED daytime running lights, all-electric windows, soundproofed, new steering wheel, pedals, and gear knob, front seat belts, tomb raider sidebars, chequer plates, aerial upgrade, bulkhead removal kit, and fully carpeted interior.

Dan will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.
