Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

The epitome of an off-road vehicle, the Defender Station Wagon offers loads of cabin space, still with the iconic looks.

The Land Rover Defender 110 Station Wagon is a "go-anywhere" icon. Finished with boxy and rugged body lines and a 2.4L inline-four turbo-diesel engine with a permanent 4x4 drive, no obstacle will be a challenge. It's the versatility of these Defenders that have endeared to country folk, farmers, vets, the military, and those who want a timeless-looking seven-seater.

The Defender remained in production for a whopping 33 years and hardly changed over that time, it boasts unrivaled off-road abilities with a rugged charm, so many loved.

This Defender was first purchased by the MOD. Finished in the classic Chawton White, this car is representing very low mileage for being a proper workhorse, only showing ~19,000 on the odometer.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Jeremy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Defenders have that desirable rugged charm, I was thinking of modernising this one, but it seems like keeping it original is a better bet.

Jeremy purchased the car with the intention of upgrading and modernising the car significantly. When he received the vehicle however, he has second thoughts given how original it is. With only the MOD listed as former keepers of this car, and the low mileage of ~19,000 shown on the odometer and MOT records, he felt that actually this car is too nice in its original form to modify.

He's now had the car for just over a month, and has decided to look for a different Defender to modify, this one he feels belongs in a collection hence the reason for sale. Jeremy will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

The timeless boxy design from the aluminium sheet body is very similar to the 1948 original, a car that's aged gracefully.

Wheels and Tyres

The car rides on its original 16" body colour matching wheels, which look in good condition all around, including the full-size spare on the rear of the car. The hubs and wheel bolts are showing surface rust as pictured, rather common for a defender. The tyres are Michelin 4x4 O/R, which have a great amount of tread left as shown.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears in great condition, in line with the age and use of the car. The panel gaps and shut lines appear very straight, great to see on a Defender of this era. Just a few areas to note, a dent near the drivers door handle and a small dent below the rear right light cluster.

The car has been fitted with a new front bumper that ensures it looks smart. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the bodywork on this hardy 4x4.

Paint

The Defender is finished in Chawton White, which appears in good condition around the car. The paint on each panel presents a deep lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout.

When getting really close we noticed a few very minor stone chips, and the paint on some of the door sills has worn down. Please take a look at the photos and videos for an extensive view of the car.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the trim. All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading.

Interior

A simple yet highly practical cabin space, these are utility vehicles after all.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of the car looks just as you would expect for a low mileage example. The seats, door cards, and headlining look great. The only point to note really is that the inner side of the drivers seat foam has lost its shape/moved, something that you'd think was an easy fix to remedy.

The carpeted interior tells a similar story, clean and smart. Take a look at the interior video in high resolution for a detailed tour.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in original condition and shows very little wear in line with the age and mileage of the vehicle - a testament to the car being looked after over the years.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original classic Land Rover steering wheel is fitted and looks in excellent condition inside this iconic 4x4. The gearstick and range selector also look in great condition and in line with the rest of the car.

Mechanics

The Defender really outperforms its competition off-road, the 2.4L diesel pulls like a train.

Engine and Gearbox

The TD5 gave good service, but couldn't comply with European emission regulations, so for Land Rover, they opted for the Ford Duratorq four-cylinder diesel. The 2402cc TDCi achieved the best-ever rates of throttle response and torque through the rev range. It was also the quietest engine, thanks to development in the technology, and offered drivers a pretty smooth ride.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting without fuss the first time, and went in the car to the shooting location, the car performing without fault.

Suspension and Brakes

In 1983, the switch from leaf spring to coil spring suspension was a key part of the 110's success. It offered improved off-road ability, load capacity, handling, and importantly ride comfort.

Jeremy reports suspension and brakes work very well, mentioning a comfortable ride with stopping on-demand performance.

The Drive

A fantastic all-rounder, it's a very practical utility vehicle, previously owned by the MOD. The Defender offers a unique experience, one that'll make you smile wherever you decided to venture.

Electrics and Other

Jeremy reports all the electrics, buttons, and knobs etc work within the car to his knowledge. The car has air-conditioning from factory, and Jeremy confirms it is working nicely.

History and Paperwork

A lovely, low mileage example finished in a classic Chawton White, the Defender is an unforgettable motoring icon.

The car comes with a limited amount of paperwork, but with evidence of MOD police ownership. It was likely serviced in house by the MOD, and is coming to market out of short term ownership as mentioned previously.

This defender has a very clean MOT report history and is sold with two keys. Jeremy will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.
