Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The most capable and most cost-effective off-roader that sensible money can buy.

Visually the design of the Land Rover had remained virtually intact over its illustrious 67 years of production, but it would be unfair to compare the post-2012 Defenders with the originals. True, they share the same silhouette and those simple, flat, easy to repair panels and the tough steel box-section ladder-frame chassis, but the last incarnations of the design classic were plusher, quicker and far easier to live with. Powered by the Euro 5-compatible Ford-sourced Duratorq 2.2-litre 122hp diesel engine, the new engine complimented the ventilated disc brakes, the option of more comfortable seats and upgraded stereo equipment, extra sound insulation and a smarter, slightly more car-like interior.

Nothing gets quite as close as the Land Rover as an icon for off-road shenanigans, yet so many solid examples have been spared the rough stuff as values head upwards. Bought six years ago as a leisure and business vehicle, this 110 in USW (Utility Station Wagon) spec example of the evergreen classic has seen a few tasteful modifications to improve its functionality. The bespoke custom-made roof rack was constructed to accommodate the transportation of Kayaks, with rear and front-mounted auxiliary LED lights to aid vision. The car has also had a reversing camera and Bluetooth connectivity fitted. Clean and solid throughout, just ~52,500 miles recorded, it has led a charmed life and is looking for its next adventure.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Mark the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is the third Land Rover I've owned, it offered me everything I needed in a workhorse.

Mark is familiar with the Land Rover Defender, having owned several other versions in the past and he reckons this 2.2 Puma Diesel-powered is the best of the lot.

Used as a leisure and work vehicle, the car has seen a handful of modifications to assist him as an Adventure Sport/Kayak transportation tool. Rarely if ever, used off-road, the sheer versatility and dependability have forged a deep connection between man and machine! A lack of recent use, with his company van being drafted into regular use, is the main reason why it's being placed for sale. He'll be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section.

Exterior

The overall presentation betrays its off-roading ability, this one has really been cared for over time.

Wheels and Tyres

The well presented 5-spoke alloys wheels show minor signs of age but display well with the Continental tyres. Two of the tyres are recent fittings and all have a good level of tread.

View the photo gallery to see the wheels up close.

Bodywork

Build quality had seen a marked improvement by the time the 2012 model was launched, and the car retains its smart presentation throughout. The lack of dents and bumps under the car suggests it has been well looked after, which has been verified by the owner mentioning that the chassis has been treated with a copious amount of oil to resist the rigours of time. All of the mounts are in good condition, with no issues noted on the chassis rails, A-posts, bulkheads, floor or inner wings.

The exterior is in a similarly smart condition, with no obvious blemishes or dents, asides from a minor ding noted on the off-side front A post. The panels are level and well fitted, with no issues in regards to the opening and closing of the doors.

Please take your time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at this vehicle.

Paint

The appealing "Keswick Green" finish is in excellent condition throughout, with no significant signs of ageing on the paint. It is a favourite colour amongst Land Rover enthusiats, and It retains a good gloss, with not much more than minor road chips that constitute any form of blemishes. Body coloured roof and arches on this example help add to the appeal.

The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in good condition, with no marks or chips observed. All have good rubber seals. Items such as the sidebars, mudflaps, bumpers, rear ladder and roof rack are in very good condition with a little wear in places but nothing to suggest heavy use. A good percentage of the body screws have been replaced with stainless steel items.

Additional items like the grille, lights and checker plating are all decent, with no issues of note. Again, the upgraded front grill on this example adds further to the appeal of this USW spec Defender.

Interior

The last of the line Defenders was the plushest of the lot, this 110 USW has some sensible upgrades in the cabin.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are covered in heavy-duty seat covers, but the seats are all said to be in good order with no damage. All retain a good level of firmness, as reflected by the mileage of the car. The floor is covered in rubber mats, all of which are in good condition.

The luggage floor area is plated with black checker sheets, which also has an inbuilt sliding storage section. The condition of the metal and plastic at the back suggests it has seen careful use and has not been subject to abuse. Please view the gallery for detailed images.

Dashboard

The facia is in decent order, with the odd scuff noted, but is free from cracks or heavy use. All of the dials, controls and switches are functional, including the smoothly operating electric windows. A Duritc camera system has been mounted to facilitate reversing capabilities. An additional wire hangs from the rear to allow the connection of the camera to a potential trailer.

The car is also fitted with a Pioneer DAB+ stereo with Bluetooth functionality. A padded centrally mounted cubby storage box with lock has also been fitted by the owner. The door cards are good with light wear and no immediate issues with the headlining condition.

Please see the interior gallery section for more detailed images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel doesn't show any significant wear and along with the gear lever, is in line with the overall positive presentation of the cabin. What you'd expect given the exterior condition of the car, and befitting with the recorded mileage.

Mechanics

Its off-road abilities are legendary, yet it ably performs its on-road tasks with aplomb.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.2-litre engine started up on the button with no issues at all. There is no smoke on start up, with no signs of leaking fluids. The unit idles well, and no dashboard lights were observed to have stayed on. The engine is responsive and refined on the move, with the owner pointing out its good low-end flexibility and ability to keep up with modern traffic.

The gearbox and clutch are fully compliant, a 6 speed manual, with no reported issues with their functions. Its low range gearbox and the centre differential locking are operational. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The car travelled well at the test drive, with no signs of vibration upon braking, with the steering free from any noises. The braking is effective, with no juddering or drama coming from the discs. The car was not fully tested off-road, but traversing a field for the photoshoot did not produce any unwanted creaking or knocking.

The Drive

Remarkably civilised on the move, the ride is charismatically firm, as you have to accept its ancient underpinning are part of its endearing foibles. The noise levels, as well as the typically rattly soundtrack one might associate with Land Rovers, is largely absent (especially at lower speeds) and its off-road ability would probably need a separate listing to describe, as it still is nothing short of remarkable.

Electrics and Other

Fitted with rear and front LED lighting, as well as an additional rear spot lamp which is activated when you select reverse gear. The tubular roof rack has been well constructed and hasn't needed to support anything more taxing than a collection of kayaks. The car is fitted with a towbar, and again its main duties have not gone beyond towing a trailer full of Kayaks.

History and Paperwork

This 110 Defender USW has some choice upgrades and modifications that make it that much more appealing, with just a fraction of the mileage of most similar cars and in a very popular colour, this Land Rover is ready and waiting.

Originally registered at Marshall Land Rover in Peterborough, it has only seen two previous keepers over its lifetime. There are 4 notifications of servicing in its booklet, with an additional recent service carried out by the current owner's mechanic. It comes with a good body of paperwork, most of which covers servicing, MOTs and sundry items. There is also a receipt for new paint in 2019, along with recently fitted tyres. The modifications carried on the vehicle, such as the roof rack, auxiliary lighting and interior additions have been carried out by Mark himself.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Thanks, apologies for being twitchy but any accident repairs are concerning. It’s the huge bill for a bonnet and grill that I couldn’t get my head around. Nearly £8k seemed like total front end.
Thanks for your assurances.

Hi,

The auction house states there has been an HPI check but can’t see the report. Someone has asked already if it’s logged as a cat S or N etc, do we know the answer? Many thanks
