Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The original Elise is as lean as a greyhound and just as quick.

Acclaimed as an instant classic when it first hit the roads in 1996, it caused a genuine frenzy in the motoring press and refocused Lotus as a maker of compact and thrilling cars. It was one of a number of affordable driver-focused sports cars sold at the time, but its Lotus heritage added a far more convincing line of credibility, backed up by their experience in lightweight bodies.

The curvy and poised styling houses a spartan race-influenced cabin - with no frivolities. The reliable mid-mounted ‘K-Series’ engine provided the power, and while it is a modest displacement, it propelled the 725 kg car firmly into supercar territory with a genuine high thrill factor.

This very clean and original 1998 car has been with the same owner for 23 years and has always been used as a weekend and occasional toy. Finished in Metallic Azure Blue, it was spec’d with leather seats, driving lights and a passenger footrest. With a recorded mileage of just 26,249 miles at our time of visit, it comes with its original driver's wallet, two keys and an MOT to June 2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Nicholas the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A proper drivers' car but one that has been reliable and very usable too.

Bought simply as a plaything, Nicholas purchased the car directly from Haydon Cars, the Salisbury-based Lotus main dealer. Attracted to the incredible handling, he ensured that the car was always MOT'd and more importantly well maintained for those occasional weekend blasts.

Owning the car for an incredible 23 years, the decision to sell it was not one he took lightly, but an increasing lack of use is the main reason why the car needs to find a new home.

Exterior

The benefits of covered storage and fair-weather-only use are very evident here.

Wheels and Tyres

It is fitted with a set of 15-inch front and 16-inch rear five-spoke alloy wheels - all appear to be in good condition, and free of significant marks.

The front Verso tyres and Kleber rears are in good shape with even tread.

Bodywork

The underside tray is in good shape, with no significant signs of grounding, and the bonded extruded aluminium chassis looks solid. The front clamshell is free of speed bump damage, with nothing more than few scuffs.

There are no cracks observed on the fibreglass body shell, with the shut lines appearing to be even. The passenger doors open and close with no issues.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Metallic Azure Blue paint is consistent throughout and the finish appears to be free of crazing or gel-coat issues. Typically for a low sports car, the nose is lightly peppered with road wear and a few marks are noted on the rear deck and passenger doors, but the car remains neatly presented throughout. The paint protection film on the rear lower arches shows a little age but is still intact.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, commensurate with the age of the car but free of any significant damage.

The trim is intact throughout, with the lights and lenses all free of damage.

The rubber seals are in good shape and consistent with a car that has been stored indoors for much of its life.

Interior

Very much a driver-focused cabin, the interior has worn well.

Seats and Carpets

The biscuit leather-trimmed seats have lasted well, with nothing more than a little creasing noted.

This is not the car for you if you need luxurious carpeting but it is fitted with a passenger footrest.

Being picky there are a few scuffs noted on the footwells.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent condition, with the plastics and trim in decent shape.

The binnacle is in good condition with just the visor showing signs of age.

All of the dials and controls are functional, with a Kenwood CD/Radio player installed.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is well-presented with minor wear, the gear lever is intact.

Mechanics

Drivers dynamics at its purest, the Elise is light, fast and fun.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.8-litre ‘K-Series’ inline-four starts up without any issues, with all of the ignition lights remaining off during the cold start video.

The engine idles smoothly, with no hiccups, and no issues in regards to the exhaust.

The five-speed gearbox is smooth and selects ratios without any issues, with the clutch offering a healthy biting point.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension set-up is standard and naturally set up for ability rather than comfort, but there are no outstanding rattles or signs of looseness.

The car appears to be using Koni shocks.

The car brakes evenly, with no suggestions of juddering or squeals.

The Drive

The ride experience of the Elise is a truly visceral experience, its razor-sharp contributing to its nimble character, as the engine buzzes behind you.

The car was not opened up to its full potential, but it's clear to see that the urge was easily on tap. On the move, there were no suggestions of differential whine, and the car cornered tightly with no immediate signs of creaks or unwanted noises from the suspension.

Electrics and Other

The engine lid stay bracket is missing and the luggage storage over tray has a fracture, but it is still fit for purpose.

The hood and roof bars are in good condition, the owner confessed that he hasn't fitted them on the car for a while - they are all stored in a protective bag.

History and Paperwork

Its modest mileage is backed up by a straight-forward array of invoices and MOTs.

Originally registered in Bournemouth in May 1998, it was believed to have been a demonstrator car. It has seen pleasingly regular MOT sessions, roughly in the same month ever since. It saw regular servicing in its early life, with subsequent fluid top-ups and checks by a local garage whilst in the hands of the current owner, who bought it when it was just two years old.

The MOT records confirm its fair-weather use, and in the last 15 years has averaged 700 miles a year. Naturally, its maintenance costs have been reassuringly low, with the most recent attention to steering alignment, clutch work and a new exhaust. It comes with its owner's wallet, two keys and an MOT to June 2024.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Nicholas, lovey looking Elise, a testament to its owner. Just wondering what the cable in the main interior shot is/for?

Also, have you taken any of the (&/or not so) common measures, to prevent headgasket issues?
E.g upgraded gasket (&/or bolts) thermostat replaced, aluminium radiator etc?

Plus was exhaust replaced due to an upgrade, or replaced due to original rotting out?

Hi Nicholas,
You have a super looking car and I bet have had a lot of fun with it over the 23 years you’ve owned it. Do you know whether or not it has the MMC brakes or not? Many thanks, Matthew

Hi, do you have an idea of what your car is worth?
If this is within my budget is it possible to view? I live in Alresford so not too far away. Many thanks Simon
