Lightweight, agile and enough power to put a smile on your face even at 30MPH, the Elise is truly a drivers car.

The Lotus Elise is a famous rear-wheel drive, mid-engined roadster, which was first conceived in 1994 and released to the public in 1996. Its composite body shell, which is epoxy-bonded to the extruded aluminium chassis, was a new innovation pushing the boundaries of the lightweight production car and automotive engineering. With the lightweight body and unique chassis, the Elise was fitted with double wishbone suspension, coil springs, an anti-roll bar to the front and double wishbones with an anti-roll bar to the rear. This, coupled with 15” front wheels and 16” rear wheels, made for an excellent set-up car for either the spirited road or track driver. The powerhouse side of things is taken care of by Rovers K-Series engine, which comes in at an impressive 118BHP, coupled with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

This S1 is coming to market from 6 year ownership. Being well maintained and having a recent timing belt change means that it’s the perfect Lotus for those looking for two-seater fun this summer. This example came optioned with leather seats, aluminium branded window winder, front fog lamps, and has had a beautiful ~£2,500 exhaust fitted to further enhance it.

Meet the owner

What a great car to own, there's nothing better when the sun is out than getting the roof off and heading out to find some twisty roads to feel it come alive.

Bill purchased this lovely 2000 Lotus Elise S1 6 years ago with approximately 62,000 miles on the clock. Since then, the car has been used just for sunny days out, covering on average ~1,000 miles per year. Bill has kept the car in fine fettle with regular servicing carried out by his mechanic friend.

He had a custom exhaust fitted in 2017 which sounds and looks the part on this roadster. More recently, in late October 2021, he had a major service actioned on the car which included timing belts and water pump. Even though the Lotus is great fun to own, Bill has decided to part with it due to little use and not finding the time to enjoy it, meaning some new lucky person will become the proud owner of an S1 Elise. Exterior

Designed with one thing in mind... Speed - The lightweight body and aerodynamic styling are the perfect combination.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels are in excellent condition with just some minor age-related marks. The tyres are Toyo to the front and Yokahama to the rear, which all have a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

Moulded with a composite material means there are no nasty dings or dents to worry about on the Elise. The panels fit nicely with an even gap around the doors, bonnet and engine cover.

The roof fits well and when in place, is nice and tight with a good seal. The underside looks to be clean with no areas for concern to the undertray panels creating a smooth floor.

Paint

Finished in the original Lotus colour of "Racing Green Metallic", the car has been repainted by a previous keeper before Bill. Starting at the front, there are some stone chips to the front end, but nothing you wouldn’t really expect. Other than that, looking around the car, it presents well with no apparent scratches or chips to point out.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show you the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves and for you to make your own minds up on the condition.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen does have a small chip on the driver's side. This could possibly be repaired but would need checking by a windscreen expert to confirm this. The other windows look to be in good condition and also the door seals are in good order.

The lights both to the front and rear are in good condition with no splits or cracks to the lenses. Some aftermarket covers have protected the headlights, which nicely match the body's shape. An optional extra for the Elise was the front driving lights mounted inside the grille, which are in good condition.

Interior

Just like a race car, the Elise is minimalistic to save weight and totally driver focused.

Seats and Carpets

Another optional extra with the Elise was the red leather trim. This is generally in good order, there does look to have been some reconnollising at some point to the top of the driver's seat, but other than that, both seats are in good order.

There is a set of mats fitted which have been fastened down. The small storage area has been kept clean and has no issues to mention. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard has been repainted in satin black to match the door cards. This is in good condition and has no damage or scuffs. The instruments are working as they should, with the odometer displaying a reading of ~67,389 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has some light shining to the rim and a few small scuffs, all in keeping with the mileage and use.

The aluminium gearknob shows 1-5 and reverse, and is in good condition. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

A recent major service to this K Series engine puts this car in fine fettle, the Elise produces ~118BHP in something that weighs just ~731kg.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.8L engine fires up as it should. There was a recent service in October 2021, with a cam belt change, water pump, and new clutch fitted just over ~200 miles ago, meaning the car is in excellent shape for the new keeper.

There are no untoward noises coming from the engine or transmission, and the car pulls strongly through the gears with a smooth, precise change. In addition, the vehicle has been fitted with a custom-made Longlife stainless steel exhaust, coming at a cost of ~£2,500, giving a slightly more aggressive tone.

Suspension and Brakes

New coilover dampers have been fitted to the Elise, meaning you can tailor the set-up to suit your driving style. The suspension is firm but without being harsh and is excellent fun around any twisty roads where the Elise comes into its own.

The brakes stop the pocket rocket quickly thanks to the Lotus Yellow brake pads, which are quite new. The discs also look to be in good condition, with no lip showing to the edge from our observation.

The Drive

There’s only one word to describe being out in the go-cart like Lotus... Fun! It really is a car you will enjoy. The low-down seating position and lightweight chassis give you that real race car feeling, only on the road.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear all looks to be in good condition with no excessive wear to it. There is a slot for a stereo with no stero fitted currently, and the blanking plate is missing.

History and Paperwork

An excellent history comes with the Elise, importantly with recent work included a timing belt and clutch.

Many previous MOT certificates back up the mileage against the service times seen in the service booklet and previous invoices. As mentioned, the most recent included the timing belt, water pump and clutch at the cost of £2,286.24. The V5 is present along with the service book, owner's manual and two sets of keys.

This last work was just ~200 miles ago, giving the new keeper an excellent starting point into the ownership of this S1 Elise.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, and V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.
