Introduction

Stuart
Automotive Photographer

Coming fresh from a long term ownership period of over twenty years - this original UK car is a perfect investment to use and improve over time.

Introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, and produced from 1963 through 1971. This 230 SL is an example of the two-door convertible series that became an absolute stalwart for Mercedes-Benz over the years.

This particular example has been owned by Simon for the last twenty years and had a full body restoration and engine work soon after purchase. Naturally with an older restoration there is some work required, however, the car has been priced accordingly with a very attractive reserve that will give the new owner room to spend and improve.

As the saying goes, you can't change history and this car has an excellent level - everything else can be improved / fixed to make this car even more desirable in today's buoyant classic market.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Stuart after meeting Simon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've had this car for over twenty years now and selling it has been a tough decision.

Simon has owned this car for a long time and has clearly loved using it whilst maintaining it. Simon has spent thousands on the car over the years as you'll sell in the paperwork section - this is spread over bodywork and mechanics and even over £3k on chrome.

However, Simon isn't using the car much these days, so he made the decision to sell earlier this year and contacted us to help - if you have any questions then please drop them in the comments below and Simon will get back to you.

Simon saved £8,460* when they

Exterior

Achingly good looks wrapped in a bright red really makes this Pagoda stand out from the crowd.

Wheels

Lovely chrome trims are fitted that present in good condition as you'll see in the images.

Bodywork

Simon has spent a lot of time and money on the bodywork back in the early 2000s - please review all the paperwork to see the detail of that work and the associated costs.

However, as sometimes is the case with an older restoration, items start developing that need attention. The benefit of this is you can see that nothing has been covered up and you can decide on exactly the work required to rectify. You can study the condition of the bodywork for yourselves in the extensive media file, however, a few points to note are: some slight corrosion around the aerial mounting, wings and underside of doors, wheel arches and a small dent on the rear boot.

Paint

The paint is good across the car in terms of consistency of colour and finish. There are a few scratches and chips as you'll see in the media file.

As mentioned, this car has not been prepared for a sale, as such it is showing its honest condition that gives you the opportunity to see the work that may be required to increase its condition.

Glass and Trim

Simon spent over £3k on chrome during its restoration. As you can see in the media file it is generally good across the car. However, as mentioned before this car has not been prepared for sale - so we think the chrome may improve in appearance with a bit of elbow grease on a Sunday morning.

Interior

The Pagodas' interiors are always a lovely place to be - classic motoring that oozes style.

Seats and Carpets

Simon attended to the interior during the restoration and has since used and enjoyed the car.

The seats and carpets look in good condition and would simply benefit from a good clean to bring the presentation up a level.

Dashboard

Nice and original and matching the exterior colour.

The radio has of course been changed and would benefit from a more period version being re-fitted.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both fittings look original and showing wear in line with the car's age.

Mechanics

Simon created the car he always wanted car and he has since made good use of it over the years.

Engine and Gearbox

The car started from cold with no hesitation as you can see by watching the video.

It sounded good with a good reading of oil pressure too.

Suspension and Brakes

Simon assures us the car's suspension and brakes work well with no known issues to mention.

As you can see from the large invoice file, Simon has not been frightened to spend money on the car to keep it running well.

The Drive

Unfortunately due to current restrictions we weren't able to go out on our usual 'On the Road' video. However, we did shoot the car being driven around the grounds and Simon assures us the drive is good and as you'd expect, no issues to mention.

Electrics and Other

The car is quite light on electrics being from this era. However, Simon confirms to us that everything works correctly and you can see the dials working in the video. Simon has pointed out an issue with the plastic at the end of the indicator stalk that needs fixing.

History and Paperwork

A UK, right-hand-drive car coming fresh from a twenty year ownership with a mountain of paperwork - these are items you can't replace.

The value of this car is in the items you can't change, i.e. the model, ownership and history. We think this is a great entry into Pagoda ownership that's well suited to an enthusiast that will want to drive and improve the car over time. Simon has spent huge sums of money in the past and all that history / work should mean an easier route to improving the car over time.

Right now, the market is strong for these cars and Simon has set a realistic reserve meaning there's equity in this car for an enthusiast to take on.

We've actioned our usual checks on the seller, V5 and HPi clear.
