Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

American inspired ‘fintail’ offers stately sixties cruising in comfort and style.

The elegant 220B Sedan was launched at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1959 replacing the Ponton series. Styling was by Friedrich Geiger who was also responsible for the 300SL ‘Gullwing’ and the 540K sports car range. The cars were dubbed ‘fintail’ in response to the transatlantic styling that influenced many European car designers in the late '50s.

Having covered fewer that 500 miles since 2005 this particular car was imported from East Africa by the owner's father in 1973. Having been regularly maintained and MOT'd up until June 2018 the car spent much of the time in the garage covering very few miles, as can be seen from the MOT records. It represents an opportunity for the new owner to recommission for daily use or perhaps carry out a rolling restoration.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Neil the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This car was dad's pride and joy - he couldn't bear to be parted from it.

This 220 belonged to Neil's father who imported the car to the UK from East Africa. Over recent years the car has been used very little and Neil believes it is time for some other lucky owner to enjoy this classic.

Please feel free to ask Neil any questions you might have in the comments below.

Exterior

The car has lost none if it's poise and the deep grey colour suits the elegant shape perfectly.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels retain their original chrome trim and hubcaps which, although suffering some distortion from 56 years of use, seem in reasonable condition. The Avon tyres appear sound and with good tread.

In line with car's age, the trims have some minor pitting on the chrome and the painted hubcaps are chipped in places.

Please have a look at the photos and videos to see the wheels and tyres in more detail.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks generally sound with no apparent evidence of significant accident damage or panel distortion. The panel gaps appear good and the doors, boot and bonnet open and close cleanly and precisely.

Due to the car's age, there are unfortunately some 'tired' areas with some corrosion, most significantly around the door bottoms, headlight surrounds and outer sills.

Please have a look through the photographs to see the overall condition of the bodywork to assess for yourself.

Paint

This deep grey car presents well with its consistent and even paint.

On closer inspection, there are signs of bubbling in some areas as can be seen from the photographs. Most notably this has affected the door skins and headlight surrounds.

Glass and Trim

The glass is clear and much of the chrome trim is in very good condition for the car's age. When getting really close to the car we noticed a small dent in the front bumper and some minor pitting of the chrome elsewhere.

As always we have taken great care to present all exterior areas in the video and the extensive photo gallery - please have a look to appreciate the condition of this elegant sedan.

Interior

Uniquely stylish dash and white steering wheel complement the plush red interior.

Seats and Carpets

The seats appear structurally sound and are supportive and comfortable. The original owner had the seats recovered to protect the original material.

Please have a look at the photos to see the seats and carpets in more detail.

Dashboard

The dash is a very special feature of this car and is in particularly sound condition given the age of the vehicle. The speedo has an upright 'ribbon' presentation framed by the other gauges and a chrome bezel. Essentially, a German take on the transatlantic styling popular at the time.

The glass is clear and unbroken. Neil reports that the gauges and switches work as they should to the best of his knowledge.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The stylish white steering wheel and column change gear stick present in good condition and look crisp on the dark background.

As always we have taken great care to present all interior areas in the video and the extensive photo gallery - please have a look to appreciate the condition of this striking Mercedes.

Mechanics

95BHP, 2.2 Litre 6 pot propels the car to within a whisker of 100mph.

Engine and Gearbox

The car starts well from cold and settles down to a steady idle. The gauge shows good oil pressure and the exhaust emissions appear clear.

Please view the 'On the Road' video to see and hear the engine both at cold start and on the road.

Suspension and Brakes

Neil reports that suspension and brakes are sound but would recommend these are checked as part of recommissioning or MOT preparation.

The Drive

The car starts and drives nicely and gear changes are quiet and smooth.

The ride is comfortable and the suspension seems to absorb road unevenness well. Neil reports that the car appears to steer precisely, exactly as one would expect from this graceful cruiser.

Electrics and Other

Neil confirmed that to the best of his knowledge, electrics work as they should.

History and Paperwork

This much loved example of Mercedes 220B will not be out of place at shows and will certainly provide a comfortable and graceful ride on sunny weekends.

While the car has limited history there are MOT certificates going back to 2002, a handbook and a £1,100 bill for carb work in June 2020. It carries East African AA grill badging hinting at its origins.

This car is considered a 'project' car and urge you to watch all the video and review all the images before placing your binding bid.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5, and the vehicle is HPI clear.
