Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

The ultimate in quality pillarless coupés, the 250SE is one of the most elegant designs of its era.

The Mercedes-Benz halo model, a cutting-edge full-sized luxury vehicle with an emphasis on passenger comfort and safety, debuted in 1959 with the W111 series of Mercedes saloons. A program of successive model expansion, with niche options and power to expand on, the most notable addition to the range was the Paul Bracq-styled pillarless Coupe of 1961. Engine permutations and continuous development led to the 1965 250SE, which by now hosted all-round disc brakes, uprated rear axle and most significantly a seven-main bearing six-cylinder 2.5-litre fuel-injected engine.

The interior was layered with sumptuous leather and wood, making it the ideal car for long-distance travel, with enough space for 4 adults and luggage. The basic design of the coupe continued well into the 1970s, establishing the virtues of style, comfort, safety and prestige of the S-Class lineage.

In need of a few minor cosmetic tasks, this LHD 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SE Coupe comes to market from almost two years with our vendor, it is finished in gold over a dark beige Leather interior. Imported into the UK in 2001, it comes with a file of invoices and old MOT certificates and has a current V5. Structurally sound with a good mechanical standing, this usable example is fitted with the rare manual 4-speed gearbox and offers a tremendous opportunity to bring up one of the most beautiful Mercedes-Benzes up to scratch.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting William the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A fantastic opportunity for an enthusiast with passion for these cars to bring it back to its former glory!

William was motivated by the offer of a solid and functional W111 Mercedes coupe, with the intention of bringing the car up to scratch. Having owned several classics over the years, he has enjoyed the experience of driving the Mercedes for pleasure over the weekends.

However, due to lack of time and recent lack of use, William feels it's best to move it on to a new owner, who can provide it with the attention it deserves.

William will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With plenty of decent metal and a solid structure, it would benefit from some cosmetic focus on the exterior.

Wheels and Tyres

The 14” wheel trims all show marks on their rims. The steel rims are in line with the general condition of the car.

The front of the car is fitted with Michelin Rainforce MX4 tyres, with the front showing a spec of 195/75 and is date coded from 2017. The front pairs are the same spec and branded as Michelin Reinforce MX4; these date from the late 90s and show mild signs of age, but have legal tread.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Mercedes and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The exterior presents well, and the panels are flush to the body with even shut lines. The doors open and close without resistance. There are a handful of instances of minor panel damage; these seemed to be limited to a treatable lower nearside front wing dent and a dent on the roof. Corrosion was spotted on both rear inner arch lip, corner of the nearside wing and there’s a repair on the offside front wing. There is also a rust spot on the bottom of the offside rear arch where it meets the sill.

The engine bay and chassis rails show signs of age, but it appears to be mainly cosmetic. The floor pan and suspension mounts are solid, although the sill areas show their age. The boot floor is decent with a hole noted in the spare wheel well. Aside from the lower offside front inner arch, there are no significant issues seen around the wheel wells.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The gold paint has an even coverage, and the paint lustre is presentable with the sunshine showing mild hazing.

There are minor marks, peeling, chips and scratches across the panels. The nose of the car has missing paint and a more pronounced scratch can be seen on the nearside wing to the door. The wheel arch lips have seen paint touch-ups, and paint crazing is noted on the roof.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass and headlamps all appear to be in decent shape with age-related marks, but most of the rubber seals have cracked. The rear lenses have minor damage, and the front spot light casings have tarnished.

The trim appears to be complete, but much of the chrome exhibits signs of light pitting; the side window and rear lamp bezel trim bears the worst. The bumpers are well-mounted with signs of age and minor dents but generally free of significant corrosion.

image

Interior

Although the cabin presentation will require attention, the fittings and detailing still impress.

Seats and Carpets

The front leather seats have worn, showing age-related cracks and wear, but are free of major rips.

The carpets are complete and presentable. We felt a dampness on the driver's side - this is likely to be water ingress through the door seals rather than a structural issue.

The car comes with its original mats and tunnel fabric.

image

Dashboard

The wood finish on the dashboard needs a refurb, while most of it is veneer damage; some elements, such as the instrument binnacle, would need replacing. The leather padding is generally in good shape, with creasing noted on the passenger side and a repair needed near the steering column.

The chrome embellishments seem to be all correct and in place; the bezels and trim show age-related wear but still present well. William has told us that all of the dashboard functions work as they should.

The door cards are decent, although the driver's armrest is damaged. The other side cards show their age in places. The headlining is grubby, and there is a tear above the driver's seat.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The 2-spoke steering wheel has cracks and wear, and the horn padding shows perishing.

The gear lever is decent.

image

Mechanics

The car's robust engine and comfortable ride make it an ideal cruiser.

Engine and Gearbox

The car starts up at first attempt after a couple of seconds, the engine sounds even and free of unwanted noises, and there are no dashboard warning lights or excessive exhaust smoke on start-up.

The engine shows mild age-related wear, with some metal components demonstrating a sheen of surface corrosion. The hoses and ancillaries look good. There were no fluid leaks on the day, but the base of the engine is coated with a sheen of oil.

The manual gearbox operates without any reported issues, and it appears to change smoothly. William is happy with the performance of the clutch.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The braking is effective, with no negative feedback at lower speeds. We didn’t hear any binding or squeals during the test drive.

The car rides well, offering smooth travel with no unwanted noises heard from the wheels.

image

The Drive

The W111 series of coupes were well regarded as reassuringly exclusive and was held in the highest esteem when new. Their comfort, quality and first-class controls complement the legendary engineering, fuel-injected engines and reassuring steering and brakes. While not a sluggish car, the 250 SE is best suited for long-distance travel, rather than off-the-lights blasts.

The level of ride comfort has not diminished over the years, upholding the over-engineered reputation that went into these cars. The engine pulls well, free of splutters and any undulations and warmed up with the minimum of fuss. The engine idles exceptionally smoothly, with no notable vibrations felt in the cabin.

It pulls well, as William went through the gears, with no strains or harshness. The power-assisted steering remained compliant, and he assured us that it felt good in motion and remained true upon braking and acceleration. He has not experienced any issues with the oil pressure or engine temperature.

Electrics and Other

We just noticed that the offside glass doesn't wind down completely.

History and Paperwork

Imported into the UK in 2001, this rare manual example comes with evidence of maintenance and spending.

Imported into the UK in 2001, this 1967 LHD car comes with invoices since 2007 for mechanical work, floor pan panels, gear linkages and other sundry parts. There are 9 MOT certificates from 2006 to 2018, which document that the car covered around 5,000 miles during that period and has had another 3,000 miles since then. It is MOT and Road exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
