Introduction

This R107 appeals to any serious car collector looking for one of the best examples on the market.

The Mercedes 280 SL enjoyed its life in Australia before being imported to the UK in 2016 and subsequently, Ireland. Paul, the owner, bought the car in early 2018 and has used sparingly for roughly 700 kilometres.

Sadly, the original owner passed away soon after the purchase of the vehicle. The owner's widow kept the car in a dry garage in Australia for many years, not wanting to part with the Mercedes due to its sentimental value. After covering ~12,000 miles the car was eventually imported by the late owner's stepson who sold to an established Aston Martin dealership in 2016.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul the owner, having photographed and filmed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A passionate collector of cars, Paul is always looking for the best examples.

Paul came across this mint condition example in 2018 at auction. He enjoyed the car that year, driving roughly 700 kilometres before parking the SL-class in his garage among other great examples. There is no doubt he is a diligent buyer and cares for his cars, this Mercedes has been treated like every other under his ownership.

He understands the market and believes the guide price truly reflects a good deal for both parties, given that this is a mint condition R107.

Exterior

The exterior of the Mercedes is as good as they come, presented in mint condition.

Wheels and Tyres

The Mercedes 12-hole, chromium-plated wheels are in excellent condition and colour matched to the car as you would expect.

Period correct 2-year-old Michelin MXV tyres maintain an excellent tread having done only 700km under Paul's ownership.

Bodywork

The steel sheet bodywork looks great, showing no signs of rust or damage in the photos and videos, a testament of Paul's ownership of the car.

All shut lines are straight and show great care over the years.

Paint

The Silver Green metallic paint (Code 861H – Silbergrun) looks even and pristine, with no signs of bubbling across the car.

Also, when matched with the tan leather interior, this is one of the most desirable colour schemes of an R107 out there.

Glass and Trim

Both look excellent across the whole car.

Interior

The pristine factory trimmed leather paired with the Silver Green metallic paint is delightfully eye-catching.

Seats and Carpets

The tan leather seats are maintained in excellent condition, due to the minimal mileage the car has had throughout its life.

Colour-matching carpets also look incredibly clean and well looked after by Paul.

Dashboard

All gauges on the dashboard look very clean whilst the leather that is applied to the dashboard shows no signs of lifting or damage.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic black Mercedes steering wheel of the era is presented in excellent condition.

The automatic 4-speed gearstick has also been kept very well over the years.

Mechanics

The R107 offers a comforting ride and little worries to the new owner with bills and invoices due to the condition.

Engine and Gearbox

Paul has filmed a cold start video to show us the reliability of the engine when starting from cold, you can hear the car settling into a smooth tick over.

The 2.8L I6 engine, as well as all surrounding parts, look clean and well-cared for by previous owners

Suspension and Brakes

The rear suspension utilises double wishbones suspension whilst the rear is a diagonal swing axle whilst the brakes are power-assisted disc brakes.

As you can see from the underside of the car, these look in great condition.

The Drive

A Mercedes engine and automatic gearbox will always marry up kindly together, and this example is no different.

The ride from the R107 is comfortable, smooth and satisfying, Paul assures us the car drives well and is ready to drive away.

Electrics and Other

As you can see in the video, Paul tests out the ignition that works as well as the radio that is in working order.

Paul assures us all electrics and mechanical aspects of the car work as they would be expected.

History and Paperwork

After Paul used the car in 2018, it is now waiting in his collection for the new owner.

The original owner's widow kept the car in a dry garage for many years and the car was used only very sparingly explaining the very low 12,218 km covered. His stepson brought the car into the UK in July 2016, where eventually, a well-known Aston Martin Dealer purchased the car.

Paul, the owner, used the car sparingly in 2018 after purchasing earlier in the year. Since then, the car has been in his collection maintaining a clean condition throughout. There is a signed letter from the original owner as a part of the history file.

I had the Boot repaint because I took off the Roof to enjoy the great Summer 2 years ago and I scratched it by not realising how Heavy it was. The Paint other wise is Perfect, Summer Sun in Australia
