Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Elegant, stylish and probably one of the most well-known Mercedes-Benz of its time - the R107 is perhaps one of the classiest modern classic German models in which you could put your money.

As a well established open-top tourer, the R107 SL Mercedes-Benz range is often considered a safe choice for the classic car owner seeking the classic car experience, but also demanding the build quality and durability of a more modern design. The well regarded and long-lived R107 Mercedes roadster characteristics are defined by its handling and road holding, with emphasis on comfort and refinement. When first rolled out to the public in 1971, the series of luxurious tourers were not cheap. While they were not considered particularly sporting cars, they offered plenty of space, practicality and almost peerless build quality. These valuable assets endeavoured the R107 as the brand's flagship convertible for an impressive 18 years.

What a fantastic 1976 350SL in great condition. Christopher has covered just ~2,000 in the car in 18 months. Although he loves to drive the car and loves everything about it and the attention it draws, unfortunately, space is a problem meaning it is being offered for sale.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Christopher the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After speaking to my neighbour who owned the Mercedes and told me he was selling it, I jumped at the chance to own a classic Mercedes.

Christopher is the owner of this lovely 1976 Mercedes 350SL. He purchased the car from his neighbour, who had owned it for approximately five years. The idea was to have the Mercedes in the garage, ready to use for a lovely weekend out during the summer months. This has been fantastic for the past 18 months, and Christopher has had some great runs out in the car. The problem now is that for the past four years, he has been having one of his classic motorcycles restored, and the company doing it has called to say the bike is near completion. This is where the problem lies, storage! Christopher doesn't really have the room to store the car and his two classic bikes, so the 350SL has drawn the short straw.

Please feel free to ask Christopher any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Just look at it - smooth, sleek and elegant, all rolled into one lovely 350SL - a stunning design which will probably be hard to beat.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels are on the car covered with the painted centre hubcaps, which match the Grey Blue Metallic colour of the hardtop roof. These are in good condition with a minimal amount of tarnishing.

The tyres are all matching and have a good amount of tread remaining.
Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Looking around the SL, the bodywork seems to be in good order. There is an odd, very light ding on the door and wing, but only really notable in the right light and if caught at the right angle. The doors look to align correctly with an equal panel gaps to the bonnet and boot, and all open and close as they should. There is a bit of bubbling around one of the wiper mounting points.

There is a blue fabric roof fitted. This shows signs of age, which isn’t too bad for 46 years old. There are a couple of light wear marks above the doors, and the nearside window has split. With that said, there are plenty of companies out there who can supply and fit a roof if required. It was on the to-do list but didn’t really bother Christopher a great deal as he only used it when the sun was out.

The Grey Metallic Blue hard top is included. This has spent several years off the car as neither Christopher nor his neighbour ever fitted it. There are some signs of surface corrosion on the bottom corner of the roof where it sits on the car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in Blue Metallic (931), the 350SL has seen some freshening up in the past, but this would be at least seven years ago before Christopher’s neighbour purchased the car. It presents really well with a deep shine. There are a few swirl marks here and there, but nothing a detailer or a Sunday DIYer shouldn’t be able to tackle with a machine polish.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows around the car are in excellent condition with no apparent scratches. The windscreen has a top tint and has a tiny amount of delamination starting on the bottom edge.

The chrome trim around the windows is all in good order with just minimal signs of age in an odd few places. The rest of the chrome work on the bumpers is generally in good order, apart from some bubbling on the nearside piece of chrome on the corner of the bumper.

The lights are all in good order with no splits or cracks to the lenses.

Interior

Check material centres and vinyl outers on a sprung seat offer plenty of comfort in the 350SL.

Seats and Carpets

The check centres and vinyl outers do require some attention to the driver's seat, and on both seats, the horse hair seat pads, both upper and lower, have started to deteriorate and break down with age.

The carpets are in good condition, with minimal wear under the fitted mats. Inside the boot is the rubber boot mat. The boot floor does have a small area of corrosion to the left of the wheel well.

The spare wheel is present along with the jack and warning triangle.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

Finished in beige to match the seats, the dashboard has no signs of any damage and is free from any splits or cracks. The odometer shows a reading of 13,340 Kilometers. This is believed to have been fitted in France, where a previous owner used the car to travel from her UK home to her holiday home in France. The original odometer is included and has a reading of 77,419 miles. However, the seller believes that the original instrument may have failed in France, where they fitted the KM odometer. If this is the case, it would put the mileage at approximately ~85,708 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original four-spoke steering wheel is in good condition with no signs of excessive wear, and the same can be said for the automatic gearknob, which is in good condition, as is the surround.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The 3.5 litre V8 may not be the biggest of the engines offered in the SL - but it still has ample performance and returns a reasonable MPG.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.5 litre fires up nicely and comes to a smooth idle with no untoward noises. There was a recent service when Christopher purchased the car; since then, it has covered approximately ~2,000 miles.

Out in the car, the Mercedes pulls well through the gears, and the change is smooth without hesitation.

Suspension and Brakes

Smooth! That’s the only way to describe the 350SL. The car glides along, soaking up the road with no knocks or bangs coming from either corner of the vehicle.

The front suspension has a creaking noise as you go slowly over a speed bump - maybe a simple bush fix or lubrication required.

The brakes bring the car to a halt in a straight line, with no juddering reported to come through the pedal.

The Drive

When this SL was launched in 1976, it was a smooth, luxurious cruiser capable of munching up the miles on any journey, and on today's roads, it’s no different. The 350SL is a great car to enjoy around town or cruising down the coast.

Where will you go?

Electrics and Other

Inside, the switch gear is all reported to work as it should with little or no wear to the buttons. Christopher only mentioned that the clock runs a little slow, but who cares about time when you’re out and about in the SL :)

A rare sight on a vehicle this old is the original Blaupunkt radio. There has also been a new electric aerial fitted; this has improved the reception, but Christopher admits it’s not perfect, and he often uses his Bose speaker with his phone.

History and Paperwork

Just five previous keepers have had the pleasure of the Mercedes in 46 years - a very usable classic.

Unfortunately, any previous history has been lost for the Mercedes by the last keeper. However, there is an invoice for a service and a checklist which was carried out earlier this year. The original owner's manual and radio instructions are also present.

The 350 has just been put through an MOT since our visit and passed with just two small advisories:
- Sub-frame pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Front and rear subframe bushes worn (5.3.4 (a) (i))
- Offside Front Washer inop

This 350SL is perfect for anyone wanting to buy a R107. The car runs well and looks to be in good condition. Yes, the interior would benefit from some attention, but it’s nothing that the handy DIYer couldn’t sort out with some replacement seats that are readily available.

Completely usable and ready to be enjoyed -we offer you the 1976 Mercedes-Benz 350 SL on a very low reserve.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
