Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Few cars capture the effortless grand touring character of the 1970s quite like the Mercedes-Benz R107 SL.

This 1977 350SL combines elegant styling with V8 power, an automatic transmission, and the versatility of both a folding soft top and removable hardtop.

Finished in an attractive light green with a beautifully preserved contrasting interior, this example has been with its current owner, Kiran, for around five and a half years. Maintenance has been carried out during his ownership, and Kiran reports that the engine, gearbox, suspension, and brakes are all performing well.

With its understated colour combination, extensive chrome trim, and unmistakable R107 profile, this 350SL presents as an appealing example of one of Mercedes-Benz's most recognisable classics.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Kiran the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve owned the Mercedes for around five and a half years and it’s a lovely car to drive. I’ve really enjoyed my time with it.

Kiran has owned this 350 SL for approximately five and a half years, maintaining the car throughout his ownership and enjoying everything this classic Mercedes roadster has to offer.

He tells us the car drives very well, with the V8 engine and automatic gearbox operating smoothly, while the suspension and brakes are also performing as they should.

Kiran has clearly enjoyed his time with the SL, and its smart overall presentation. Particularly the beautifully preserved interior, reflects a car that has been well cared for during his ownership.

Kiran would be happy to answer any questions into the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in a distinctive light green, this 350SL presents very well overall, with good shutlines, smart brightwork, and the classic proportions that make the R107 such a recognisable Mercedes-Benz.

Wheels and Tyres

The original-style Mercedes wheels present very well around the car, with the colour-matched centres and chrome surrounds complementing the exterior nicely.

The tyres also appear in good visual condition, with no obvious issues noted from our inspection.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork presents very well for the age of the car. Looking around the SL, the panels appear straight and the shutlines are good throughout.

We noticed a very small dent on the driver's door, but this is minor and does little to detract from the overall appearance.

The removable hardtop is also reported to be in good condition, giving the next owner the option of enjoying the car as both a coupé and an open-top roadster.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The light green paintwork suits the period character of the Mercedes beautifully and presents very well overall.

There are naturally some very minor signs of age to be found on closer inspection, including a small paint chip around the fuel filler flap, but nothing that significantly takes away from the car's smart overall presentation.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass appears clear and in good condition around the car, while the exterior trim and brightwork present particularly well.

The chrome bumpers, grille, badges, and surrounding trim retain a smart finish, although there is a small area of deterioration visible on the chrome of the rear bumper.

The soft top is also present and shows some age-related marking, while the hardtop is reported to remain in good condition.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

The interior is a real highlight of this 350SL, presenting in fantastic condition throughout. The combination of black trim and patterned upholstery gives the cabin plenty of period character, while its overall condition suggests it has been carefully looked after.

Seats and Carpets

The seats present particularly well, with the patterned cloth centres and black outer sections remaining in excellent condition. There are no notable cracks or significant signs of wear to the upholstery, and both front seats retain a very smart appearance.

The carpets also present well throughout the cabin, with no obvious excessive wear noted during our inspection.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is in very good condition and appears remarkably well preserved for the car's age. The black finish presents cleanly, with the switchgear, instrumentation, and centre console all maintaining their classic appearance.

The door cards also present nicely and carry the same patterned material as the seats, creating a cohesive and very period-correct cabin.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Mercedes steering wheel presents well. The instrumentation behind it remains clear and easy to read.

The automatic gear selector and surrounding centre console are also in good condition, with the selector markings, switches, and trim presenting neatly.

image

Mechanics

The 350 SL combines the effortless character of a V8 with the refinement and comfort that defined Mercedes-Benz’s R107 generation, creating a classic grand tourer equally suited to relaxed cruising and open-top motoring.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.5L V8 engine is reported to be running very well, with Kiran noting no concerning noises or issues during his ownership.

The automatic gearbox is also said to operate smoothly, working well with the V8 to provide the relaxed driving experience expected from an R107 SL.

image

Suspension and Brakes

Kiran tells us the suspension is in great condition, with no unwanted noises or issues to report.

The brakes are also said to perform well, giving him no cause for concern during his time with the car.

image

The Drive

Out on the road, Kiran describes the Mercedes as smooth and enjoyable to drive. The V8 performs well, the automatic transmission changes smoothly, and there are no unusual noises reported from the engine, gearbox, or suspension.

Overall, he tells us the car feels mechanically strong and has continued to provide an enjoyable classic Mercedes driving experience.

One thing Kiran would like to mention is there's a slight intermittent noise coming in the rear left wheel - he's checked it out and it could possibly be the drop links. However, on our drive out we didn't hear the noise, as you'll find out in the On-the-Road section in the Mechanical video.

image

Electrics and Other

The electrical equipment is reported to be working as expected, with no issues highlighted to us by Kiran.

The car is supplied with both its folding soft top and removable hardtop, allowing it to be enjoyed as an open-top roadster or with the additional refinement of the hardtop fitted.

History and Paperwork

This 350SL is accompanied by a substantial history file, helping to document the maintenance and care it has received throughout its life.

Included with the car is a good collection of paperwork accumulated over the years, with invoices and supporting documentation providing an insight into previous maintenance and work carried out.

Combined with Kiran's five and a half years of ownership and continued upkeep, the history file helps reinforce the impression of a classic Mercedes that has been cared for and maintained over time.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
