Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

High quality, luxurious and a glorious V8 soundtrack, the perfect German cruiser.

The Mercedes 450 SL is a beautiful looking car and was the second longest single series ever produced by the manufacturer. A stalwart when it comes to classic roadsters, these 2-seater convertibles with their classic lines, when compared to other historic cars of a similar vintage, the strong performance, smooth ride, and excellent build quality are what set it apart.

This example is finished in "Silver Blue Metallic" (930G) is absolutely gorgeous with a good condition hardtop and soft top. With the big 4.5L V8 packing bags of torque, arguably you couldn’t find a better combination. This car is coming to market from ~11.5 year ownership, and from the paperwork it is ascertainable that the car was restored to a high standard in the early 90s. It's spent most of its life in the current ownership in Spain, returning to the UK now for sale.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Danny the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Classic car style never goes out of fashion - these Mercedes roadsters are real head turners when out and about.

Danny, the owner of the 450 SL, bought it for his place in Spain in 2010, he tells us "I've owned the car for a few years now, I've always wanted to own a classic car and have really enjoyed my experience with it, the shape is such a classic style and being a fan of these cars I've tried to keep it as original as possible".

He goes on to tells us "Unfortunately due to family commitments I have to let this go, so with it being a RHD, have shipped it back to the UK for sale". Danny will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

We love the sporty, 80s design on this 450 SL, enhanced by the 5 spoke alloy wheels, and in a beautiful blue paint.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are 16" 5 spoke alloys and show well on all four corners. Given the age of this car the condition of the wheels appear to be in a good position.

Michelin Primacy HP's wrap the wheels and appear to have an ok amount of tread left on them. Looking closer at the tyres, some appear older than others so this may be worth noting for future consideration. Please take a look over our hi-resolution image gallery for a closer look at the details here.

Bodywork

The doors and bonnet look to align as they should and open and close easily, the bottoms of the doors from the inside edge show some signs of corrosion. We did notice some slight signs of corrosion when pulling the flooring mats back when inside the car too. As mentioned, the car looks to have had an extensive restoration in the early 90s.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the images and videos for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Mercedes-Benz "Silver Blue Metallic" paint has been well applied across the car and showed a good colour match, a quality job given it was actioned in the 90s. There is the odd sign of age in places, mostly in terms of chips and few marks across the body of the car but otherwise it presents nicely. We did notice some evidence of the lacquer lifting above the passenger side door, and a spot on the top of the hard top where the paint has chipped too.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the main body of the car itself looks great, with no signs of cracks or discolouration observed during our visit. There is a blue fabric roof fitted as the soft top option, this has faded slightly and there are some areas of wear to be seen, in keeping with the age of the 450 SL. On our visit we did observe that the perspex could do with being replaced on the soft top due to some discolouration on the panels. The hard top is also in good condition inside and out.

We did notice a small piece of trim missing from the front of the car around the windscreen surround section. Looking at the hard top, the window elements of this also showed in a good condition.

Interior

Comfy seats, wood veneer, that classic 80s dash from Mercedes, a great place to be whilst out on the open road.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in good shape in the cabin with the covers in good condition show little sign of wear. The carpets have worn well, with no signs of dampness. The headlining on both roofs is free from dampness or major marks from our observation.

More details of the interior can be found in our image gallery, please head over to take a look through for yourself. We have included a video tour on our "Exterior Review" video showing the soft top and hard top options in place.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good shape with signs of age on the top sections but nothing that we thought was a major issue. Overall this looks to be in a good condition and doesn't look to have cracked as these can be prone to.

The wood finish inside the car is a real classic 80s bit of styling, an upgraded Pioneer stereo needs sits in place of where the old stereo was. Although not original, Danny has let us know that this works as it should, and to the best of his knowledge the gauges and dials all work as expected.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is showing signs of wear but in keeping with the age of the car itself. Slight play was observed in the power steering on the test drive itself, of which we've highlighted in our "On The Road" video.

Woodgrain centre console and corresponding wooden drive select is still in place and looks to be in a good condition, some cracks in places that can come with age. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

The 450 SL is a classy high performance roadster, the V8 packs a punch but cruising in comfort is what these are really about.

Engine and Gearbox

Running with a powerful fuel-injected 4.5-litre V8, this car is fitted with a 3 speed automatic gearbox. On our drive we didn’t observe any untoward gear changes and overall the engine felt smooth whilst driving.

Take a look at our 'On the Road' video to see the Mercedes start up from cold, and out going through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

On our visit and drive with the 450 SL we noticed no signs of knocking or suspension issues, the car felt good out and about and was really smooth on the road test.

Danny reports the suspension and brakes work well with no known issues to note.

The Drive

The Mercedes feels really great to drive, riding comfortable through our journey on the road. These cars are all about the experience cruising with the roof down on a summers day, the 4.5L V8 giving you that little bit extra if you're looking for a bit of spirited driving.

Electrics and Other

An upgraded Pioneer stereo now sits in place in the dashboard, although not in keeping with the period, Danny lets us know that this is working as it should.

During our visit we did notice some issues with the operation of the passenger electric window, possibly sticky guides/motor. Other than this, Danny reports that the rest of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~11.5 years ownership, this car has spent most of that time in Spain, and was restored in the early 90s.

We detailed the MOT certificates and receipts for services carried out in the paperwork gallery section, with the car spending most of time in current ownership in Spain, there is of course a gap during that period. There are a number of invoices from the 90s, and some old valuation letters too, that elude to a restoration in that time to a very high standard.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
