Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

High quality, luxurious and a glorious V8 soundtrack, the perfect German cruiser.

The Mercedes R107 is a beautiful looking car and has matured with grace over the last couple of decades. They are superbly built and deserve the title of "over-engineered". It’s surprising what you can get for your money as they have always been great value when compared to other classics of similar eras/build quality. This is a car you can pull up in anywhere and get admiring glances, and is finished off with a 4.5 litre V8 giving a little bit more economy over the 5.0 or 5.6 litre.

This classic is finished in silver over grey is coming to market from 7 year ownership.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Tom the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having owned one in my 20s, the urge to own one again was something I couldn’t ignore.

Purchased 7 years ago, Tom bought the 450 SL after remembering what it was like to own one back in the day. He has enjoyed the car just as he remembered, although, “getting in and out of it when I was 20 was much easier” he tells us.

In his ownership, there was a period of time where some typical welding work was required, and so he was without the SL for some 12 months, jumping back in when ready again. Please feel free to ask Tom any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The sleek lines of the SL give the car a timeless look - one that will always be hard to beat.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are in good condition, later "Monkar" design wheels have been fitted to this R107. There is some corrosion under the lacquered finish of the wheels, but nothing an alloy wheel refurbisher couldn’t address.

The tyres are also in good condition with what looks to be a nice amount of tread remaining on each corner. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Looking around the SL there are some places where the paint has started to blister, but nothing looks to have broken through the paint anywhere. There is one dent in the nearside wing just behind the wheel, but it is possible that a paintless dent removal specialist could rectify this.

The doors and bonnet look to align as they should and open and close easily, the bottoms of the doors from the inside edge show some signs of corrosion. The boot lid does sit a little more to the right, but it opens and closes correctly, this may just need some adjustment to bring it back in line. There is a blue fabric roof fitted. This has faded slightly and there are some areas of wear to be seen, in keeping with the age of the 450 SL. The hard top is also in good condition inside and out.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior, for you to make up your own minds on the condition.

Paint

Finished in what looks to be "Smoke Silver" colour, the 450 SL has been repainted at some point prior to Tom owning the car, the data plate suggesting it as originally "Thistle Green" (881H). The finish is good with a nice gloss to it. There are some age related marks here and there, but nothing too excessive.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show you the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves and for you to make your own minds up on the condition.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and side windows are in good condition with minimal marks. The chrome trim around the windscreen has come away in a couple of places along the bottom edge. The door window trims are in good condition, with some slight perishing to the rubbers. The rear windows in the convertible roof have discoloured with age but can still be looked through.

The headlights are in good order with no chips or splits, as are the indicators and the rear light lenses. The brightwork on the bumpers of the SL is in good condition with no obvious signs of tarnishing.

Interior

The hard-wearing MB-Tex interior has stood the test of time in the SL.

Seats and Carpets

Inside the 450 SL the seats are finished in grey MB-Tex. These present well and show little sign of any excessive wear. Sitting in them, they have sprung seats which still support you well. As an optional extra the SL was ordered with a rear seat, perfect for the little ones. This is also in good order with no damage to point out.

The carpets are in grey and are clean for the age with no excessive wear. The underside of the fabric roof does have some staining which could possibly be reduced with a deep clean. The inside of the hard top has been kept quite clean and in good order.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in grey and highlighted with a walnut trim which does have age related cracking to the lacquered finish seen mainly around the centre console. Along with this, some of the grey trim to the centre console has been damaged as pictured, a similar story by the hand brake shroud.

The instruments are said to be working as they should and the odometer shows a reading of 81,826 miles. Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has been replaced with a slightly smaller diameter wooden wheel. This is in good condition with no real wear to it. There is also a wooden gearknob in a slightly different shade and the surround is in good order with the letters and numbers clearly legible.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

With ~214BHP available, 0-62mph in ~8.8 seconds with a top speed of 134MPH - the 450 SL makes a lovely cruiser.

Engine and Gearbox

The V8 fires up straight away with no hesitation as can be seen in our cold start video. There has recently been a new set of spark plugs fitted and a check-over of all the fluids. The car changes gear nice and smoothly with no issues or unwanted noises coming from the drivetrain.

Watch the video to see it in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The Mercedes-Benz glides along soaking up any uneven road, helped along by the comfy seats. There are no knocks or bangs coming from the suspension. The brakes have been given a full overhaul with new rear calipers, brake pads on each corner and two new brake pipes. This was carried out in May approximately ~50 miles ago.

The Drive

A great car to take on a journey almost anywhere; sun out, roof down, and the sound of the V8 equals perfection, plus it's also a car which everyone instantly recognises and loves, so be prepared for the "what a nice car", or "I’ve not seen one of those for a while" comments.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the car has some light wear to the images on the buttons as you would expect for the age of the vehicle, but are reported by Tom to be working correctly, and the electric windows operate as they should.

There is a Blaupunkt Atlanta head unit fitted which looks to be original or a very close period looking unit.

History and Paperwork

Re-painted in the popular Smoke Silver colourway, this car has seen regular work when required in the current ownership.

The SL was stored off the road for a number of years which can be seen in the MOT history. When Tom purchased the car in 2015, he used it for a few months before sending it to Mercedes-Benz specialists Merx in Stoke on Trent, where it was kept for nearly 12 months being worked on. There was a new fuel tank fitted along with some extensive restoration to the floor which can be seen in the history gallery with photos supplied by Tom.

As mentioned the brakes have been given a full overhaul leaving just one thing left, and thats to enjoy the 450 SL in the coming summer months.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, and V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
