Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner.

The Mercedes SL is instantly recognisable to any petrolhead across the world - the R107 screams '80s chic with this car being a stunning example from that era.

The R107 was in production for 18 years, between 1971-1989, its chiseled good looks won it many admirers. Over the years the R107 was available in various spec levels from entry level 280SL to the range topping 560SL, all featuring the luxury you expect from a classic Mercedes.

This particular car is a 380 SL and comes to market after nearly three years of ownership with only 48,416 miles on the clock, and only two previous owners recorded - this is quite simply a collector quality car with future investment potential.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Brian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Brian has owned the car for almost three years now and has clearly loved his time with it.

Brian told us the car is all original, i.e. right down to the stereo and has only had two owners before he bought it nearly three years ago.

So it's clear to see that this is one well looked after and pampered SL.

Brian tells us that the car just isn't being used, as you can see from the MOT history, so he has made the difficult decision to sell the car and asked us to help find a new custodian.

Exterior

With its chic good looks and Diamond Blue metallic paint, its not difficult to see the appeal of this 380 SL.

Wheels and Tyres

Sitting on its original 14" wheels, these looked in decent condition.

We did notice a few chips in the paint on all the wheels and there was also some paint flaking off the two rear wheels, possibly from wheel weights being taken off in the past. However, given the type of finish then it's an easy job for a Sunday afternoon.

A full matching set of 205/70R14 Goodyear Eagle NCT2 were found on the SL, they all looked to have a good amount of tread left, we didn't notice any cracks or damage to the outside sidewalls either.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the SL looked in great condition with panels lining up well with tight gaps.

We didn't notice any dents in any of the panels either.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

There was a nice lustre to the Diamond Blue metallic paint, with good reflections witnessed. We did notice a small flakey bit of paint of the passenger side front wheel arch, but nothing major, we didn't notice any visible signs of corrosion around the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass looked in great condition, we didn't notice any cracks or chips in the windscreen.

The SL features a lot of chrome trim which was all looking in great condition - we didn't notice any pitting or corrosion on any of the chrome.

The cloth on the roof looked in great condition too - the hard top also looked in good condition too.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

A luxurious place to be with matching blue leather and check fabric seats and wooden inlays in the dash.

Seats and Carpets

The blue leather and check fabric seats looked in great condition, giving some '80s style too - we didn't notice any rips or tears in the seats.

The blue carpets looked in good condition too - they just need a good vacuuming.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

Big clean dials greet you, all original and looking in great condition.

Lovely wooden inlays are also found in the centre console area, and the dash looked in great condition too.

The original Baupunkt stereo was present and in working order too.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic Mercedes steering wheel was in place, looking in good condition too, with only light signs of wear witnessed.

The gear selector was also in good condition, and working as expected.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

A smooth 3.8L V8 with automatic gearbox give this SL a beautifully luxurious ride.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up on first attempt the V8 is quiet and gives an effortless drive.

The automatic gearbox shifts well with no drama or unwanted noises.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

On our drive with Brian, the suspension felt level and supple giving a comfortable ride, with no knocks or any other unwanted noises noticed.

The brakes had a good bite to them when needed.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

As mentioned above the SL is a very smooth driving car, with the 3.8L V8 having a linear power delivery and smooth gear changes.

The suspension was supple, giving a great ride - the brakes worked well too when they were needed.

To see the SL in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

We tested the windows and radio and they worked as expected.

Brian told us he's never tried the cruise control but all other electric were in working order to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

It's clear to see that this SL is a cut above the average car for sale - it's in superb condition, the right colour and is a proper investment car that can also be used and enjoyed.

The original service and radio booklets are present, as well as the latest MOT which is valid until 20.03.2024 - the SL has only covered 1,000 miles since its MOT in 2019.

There are also two keys with the car.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
