The Mercedes Benz 500 SL (R107) was one of Mercedes-Benz's longest single series cars produced, 18 years to be precise. The 5.0L V8 was a top of the market model when launched which offered great performance, handling and reliability. We think this was and still is the perfect car to go country-hopping in round Europe.

Coming out of 3.5 years of ownership, the car has an extensive service history charting its life since 1988. It is presented in the classic 80s colour of "Midnight Blue" (904) over grey leather (278) colourway, and is of course the more desirable facelift example being an 1988 example.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my ~3 years of ownership with this sports car; it's the perfect car for any summer's day.

Trevor has thoroughly enjoyed ownership of this SL 500 over the previous ~3 years, he's had the car in his dry garage, reserved for sunny weekends only which the condition reflects. This is Trevor's 4th R107 SL, he's had the complete range of engines, finishing on the top of the line at launch 500 SL.

Having recently purchased another convertible, the Rolls Royce Dawn, Trevor says he can't justify 2 soft-tops, and so the SL 500 has to go "I'm hoping to find an enthusiast to take on the ownership, someone who will enjoy the SL as much as I have". Exterior

The R107 has a timeless design, it's a stalwart amongst classic car enthusiasts.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15" factory fitted facelift wheels, finished in silver, look great on this example and give the car a luxurious appeal. During our visit, the wheels appear good, with no sign of any obvious damage, but do have signs of surface corrosion around the centres.

The wheels are fitted with Pirelli P6000 tyres, and these also appear to be in good condition, with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age on the sidewalls. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this 500 SL looks in great condition, with all the panel gaps around the car appearing to align very well. During our visit, we didn't spot any obvious dings or dents around the bodywork.

Being a facelift model, the galvanised steel is much hardier than earlier examples, and this car doesn't appear to show any signs of corrosion in the typical areas like around the headlights or the bottom of the sills. Trevor tells us he has had work actioned by the SLSHOP in both 2021 and 2022 as needed, detailed in the invoices, as well under-sealing the car for protection.

Paint

Finished in the Mercedes-Benz colour of "Midnight Blue" (904), the paint is applied with even coverage and colour across each panel. Trevor has had bodywork and paint work carried out over his ownership which shows in the condition as it stands today. While we did notice the two very small marks on the nearside arches, you'll have to get really close to notice these.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this SL 500 example looks great and is in line with the mileage. During our visit, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discoloration. The window seals also look good and align with the overall condition of the car.

The bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds are all in great condition as well. You can see in the exterior photos that the hard top is in great condition. Trevor rarely drives the car with the top up or with the hard top, as he drives the car only in dry weather.

Interior

A luxurious experience is offered on every journey with the SL 500, featuring leather and hints of veneer throughout.

Seats and Carpets

The grey leather (278) seats really give this 500 SL a luxurious feel and they have held their shape very well over the years, and Trevor has had refurbishment actioned to the seats by an upholstery expert. There's some minor wear, where the seatbelt has rubbed some small sections of the outer bolster over time, but you have to really look for it.

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in a black vinyl finish and presents three classic dials in front of the driver.

The dashboard in this Mercedes shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs, and with no warning lights displayed, repair works completed by SLSHOP in the past. The odometer showed a reading of ~99,866 miles during our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is in great condition, aligning with the mileage of this car, and the black leather automatic gear-selector looks good too. For a closer look, check out the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

Perfect for continental touring, the R107 with a 5.0L V8 powertrain is ideal for eating up the miles with ease.

Engine and Gearbox

The 5.0L V8 engine from Mercedes is regarded as a reliable unit. On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed well on the road, the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Trevor reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth automatic gearbox powering the rear wheels, servicing in current ownership having been actioned by the SLSHOP as detailed in the invoices. Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in good condition, providing a smooth journey on the sweeping Cornish roads.

During our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a sports car from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

A luxurious yet fun and enjoyable drive is offered with the roof down on this Mercedes. Trevor has loved using the car for local Cornish road trips.

The SL fired up the first time with no issues to report. On the road we didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Trevor reports that, to his knowledge, all of the electrics are functional and operational, aligning with the overall condition of the car. Trevor has purchased and fitted a Blaupunkt tape stereo for the car as pictured.

History and Paperwork

A lovely example of the facelift R107 coming to market from 3.5 year ownership, in arguably the spec to have; 500 SL, Midnight Blue over grey leather, automatic, with matching hard top.

The car is coming out of a ~3.5 year ownership with Trevor. The car has bags of originality and with the 5.0L V8 combined with smooth automatic gearbox, has that little bit more oomph to it than the earlier cars. The car comes with a colour matching hardtop. Hi Trevor, has the SL Shop confirmed the Bulkhead is OK? Also, does the private number come with the car or will it revert back to a DVLA reg? Thanks

This car has no sign of the bulkhead R107 series problem. It is a very late model (1988) and has been constantly garaged by me and the previous owner for 10 years and more. The SL shop did very little work on this car beyond servicing.
The number plate is not included in the sale.

I am aware that the bullhead problem can exist with the R107 series but there is no sign of such deterioration in my car. Both myself and the previous owner kept the cat in a closed garage for more than 10 years.

Lovely looking car. When you had it at The SL Shop, did they take a look at the front bulkhead voids, plenum chambers for corrosion as this is a common and expensive to repair weakness?
