Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

Mercedes-Benz set the bar high for the luxury automotive market back in 1984 with the brand new W124 saloon.

The W124 was Mercedes-Benz's first-generation to be officially referred to as an 'E-Class', and didn't they choose a great model to start with. A luxurious saloon with cutting edge technology and bullet-proof mechanics. Its boxy yet aerodynamic body streamlined airflow beneath the car to reduce fuel consumption and wind noise. We really love this body shape that screams the 80s.

This car is powered by the inline-4 2.3L engine providing ~130BHP, and is finished in a very attractive and popular "Almandine Red" over cream interior, we can see why Aaron jumped on the opportunity of owning this modern classic.

He purchased the car back in February, carried out general work to get it back on the road after 5 years and is now looking for a like-minded Mercedes-Benz enthusiast to take over ownership.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Aaron the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I believe the W124 Mercedes will be quite the future classic, and this Almandine Red 230E really caught my eye.

Aaron purchased this lovely Almandine Red 230E at the spur of the moment, it required an MOT and some very minor work to get back on the road, as it was last roadworthy in 2017. The car has one previous owner, who owned the car from new and only covered ~47,000 miles.

Aaron carried out some minor work to sail it through an MOT. His intention was originally to keep it for a little longer, but is looking to sell to help fund his wedding later this year. He'll be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Iconic 80s looks, finished in Almandine Red, this E class gracefully glides around the streets.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 15" classic Mercedes-Benz W124 hub cap trims, each wheel appears in great condition with no major signs of wear, just some very light scratches to each cap.

Aaron replaced all four tyres to get the car back on the road, and opted for Firestone Roadhawks in March, each one is dated 2021 and shows an excellent amount of tread, as you would expect.

Bodywork

A rather attractive luxury saloon design from the 80s. Upon inspection of the images and videos, all the shut lines across all the panels look tight and even. We did notice some small patches of corrosion on both front doors and on the nearside arch.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a very attractive and classic Mercedes "Almandine Red", it complements the luxurious cream interior.

The paint looks even in finish and colour across all the panels. Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The black plastic trim around the car appears in good condition with no major signs of wear, just some discolouration that comes with age. The glass looks great with no signs of cracks, chips or discolouration. We did notice some cracking around the aerial moulding and minor scuffs to the wingmirrors.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour.

Interior

A large and comforting interior which shows very little signs of use over the previous 33 years.

Seats and Carpets

Cloth seats fill the cabin, with a very subtle striped design, the seats appear in great condition with no major signs of wear showing signs of great upkeep over the past 33 years.

A similar story is told for the door cards, original carpets, mats and headlining, overall great condition, in line with the reasonably low mileage.

Dashboard

Clear, unmarked instruments, one very well laid out, no-nonsense dashboard. The black plastic is in great condition throughout.

The car features its original Blaupunkt radio, and the odometer showed ~48,034 miles during our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic four-spoke Mercedes steering wheel with "three pointed star" crest looks in great condition, along with the automatic gear selector and surrounding area in line with the interior of the car.

Mechanics

You can always rest assured knowing the M102 engine will last a lifetime when well maintained, bulletproof as the saying goes.

Engine and Gearbox

The power-plant on this is where Mercedes-Benz really excelled. They created a durable and reliable M102 engine - a straight-4 configuration using a cast-iron engine block and an aluminium alloy cylinder head, many high-mileage examples still out and about on the roads today.

The engine bay is presented in smart original condition. We've captured a detailed mechanical video that shows the car out on the road and a view under and around the engine bay. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the mechanics.

Suspension and Brakes

Aaron reports suspension and brakes work faultlessly, mentioning a cosseted ride, with ample stopping performance from the brakes.

The Drive

During the times he has spent in the car, Aaron reports it as being a very enjoyable and comfortable ride. He even went as far as comparing it to relaxing in a big armchair! With all the power you'd need to drive the rear wheels, these saloon really mark a time when Mercedes-Benz started to take a big share of the market.

Electrics and Other

The car is highly original, with a Blaupunkt radio. Aaron reports all the switches, lights, and buttons work as they should.

The car also comes with a spare wheel and its original first aid kit.

History and Paperwork

A classic in the making, the W124 offers luxurious driving with practicality, this example finished in Almandine Red with cream interior and low ownership makes for an attractive package.

The car comes with a good amount of provenance over it's lifetime, with service history from the original owner of ~33 years. Aaron has covered very little miles over his ownership, having had the car for a short period. Take a look at the history files in the media pack for a detailed view of the original paperwork, service history and MOTs.

Aaron will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.
