Introduction

Dom Ginn
Photographer

A touch of class in a well-proven package, the R107 is a stalwart when it comes to 80s classic lineups.

A car that could be easily be described as one that sells itself. Its reputation as a well-made, sensible and practical car with plenty of road-holding decorum and an excellent parts network, endears itself to many people seeking comfort with a touch of class. When first released in 1971, not even Mercedes Benz could have predicted its 18-year production run. However those early cars may share the same silhouette, but the 1980s brought in a host of useful improvements including a new set of efficient engines, full body galvanising and a desirability that seems to get stronger with each passing year.

As one of the last examples to leave the production line, it is considered among the most desirable of the R107 series. This 1989 "Midnight Blue" car was actually only registered on 01.01.1990 and comes with its factory hardtop, an impressive servicing record, as well as a considerable amount of recent cosmetic spending. The car has not even seen ~1,000 miles since its last service and it comes with an MOT to June 2023.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Rob the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The SL has truly won me over and turned out to be one of my favourites, we are going to miss it!

Rob took on the 300 SL, to appease his partner's preference for comfort in a classic car, and he specifically tracked down a last edition version of the R107. He hit the jackpot with this car in his preferred colourway, and a very late registered 1989 model, registered in 1990.

Serving as something of a daily driver, both Rob and his partner appreciate the car's comfort, reliability and cruising ability. Due to a job relocation, the car has seen less use in recent years and with great regret, feel that for the SL's best interests, it has to find a new home. It comes with a wealth of service history, sometimes being serviced twice in the same year, which shows the care that has gone in to this example. Rob will be happy to answer any question on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Cutting a dashing figure in its Midnight Blue paintwork, it presents in very good condition, a smart example.

Wheels and Tyres

Being a late "facelift" it comes with the later style wheels. These are in good shape, with no significant damage other than minor signs of age on some of the wheels.

The tyres are well within the legal requirements, all being under ten years old, with the front ones fitted in 2017. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The car has been subject to recent work to the underbody, with the boot floor, sills and the subframe having seen attention. The panel gaps and panel flow look good, with no noticeable issues other than light tarnishing noted on the leading edge of the bonnet, around the repeater indicator on the offside front wing and a few marks noted on the outside of the hood well.

Both side doors display corrosion on their inner bases. The hood well is solid and free of water retention. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Midnight Blue" paint is in excellent condition, with very little in terms of road wear or damage. The door edges are intact, with no other significant signs of age.

The car has a healthy lustre and displays a shine better than one might expect for a car of this age, the finish and colour being even across panels and looking sublime. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Subject to a recent renewal, the trim is very presentable with no signs of damage or poor fit. The bumpers are in good shape too, with no notable issues regarding the condition of the glass.

The hood also looks in great condition as pictured, along with hard top in matching colour, just showing some signs of corrosion in some small locations.

Interior

Mercedes-Benz is a by-word for quality and the cabin presentation upholds that reputation on this example.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in grey MB-Tex, a smart choice which helps to keep interior on this classic looking quite fresh and modern. The seats are generally in very good condition, with the driver's seat showing some typical wear on the outer bolster. The passenger seat and rear seats are well-presented. All are free of rips. The carpeting is well presented with minor signs of age but appears to be free of discolouration.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in very good shape, no cracks noted on the facia or padding. The centre console veneer shows slightly more signs of age but nothing too distracting. The dials, controls and switches are in good shape, all are said to be functional. The door cards are clean, and the headlining of the hardtop shows minor marks but is intact. The soft top interior headlining is free of damage but shows a little more in terms of age. The car has retrofitted USB ports in the glovebox.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and automatic gear selector display well with no significant signs of age, just some light cracking to the centre console veneer.

Mechanics

Durable and hardwearing, the R107 is the classic for those who need dependability too.

Engine and Gearbox

The car starts up without any trouble, the engine idles smoothly with no smoke. All of the dashboard lights remained off while the car was in motion. The engine has been subject to plenty of attention throughout its life and presents well with no doubt in regards to its reliability.

The automatic gearbox shifts smoothly with no ill effects, the owner as testified in the "Mechanical Review" video has been satisfied with the car's performance over the three years of ownership.

Suspension and Brakes

Also subject to regular attention, the braking system is more than a match for today's roads, with no observations of neglect or poor performance. The ride is balanced, with no reports of thuds or uneven travel.

The Drive

Sought for its cosseting and refined characteristics, the R107 could easily be described for those who like the classic car looks with perfectly acceptable road manners and driving.

Rob is confident with the way the car deals with his needs, and as demonstrated in the "Mechanical Review" video, had very little negative feedback on the way the car drives.

Electrics and Other

The car comes with its original factory hardtop with a matching chassis number. It is in good shape, with minor blemishes noted at the base of the nearside C-Pillar but there is more pronounced corrosion observed from the inside of the rear of the hardtop. The canvas roof is in good shape with no reported issues with lowering or raising. The hardtop comes with its stand too.

History and Paperwork

A very late facelift R107, this 300 SL has also seen thousands in bills and servicing, comes to market in the attractive blue over grey colour combination, with just 4 former keepers registered.

A 1989 car, it wasn't registered until 01.01.1990, making it one of the last RHD examples to see the UK roads. The car comes with an impressive servicing record, with previous owners taking the trouble to service the car twice a year on occasion. The current owner bought the car with around £12,000 worth of invoices and the Rob tells us that he went about carrying out a significant amount of work in 2019. This includes chrome, light, glass and interior door panel renewal. Furthermore, the car has seen a renewed subframe and steering box. More recent work includes some sill and rear floor work, with additional new fuel and brake lines. The has covered not much more than 1,000 miles since its last service and it has an MOT to June 2023.

The car will not be sold with its vanity registration plate.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
