Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Photographer

The R107 was one of Mercedes's biggest successes and it's easy to see why, a timeless classic which never fails to draw attention.

Mercedes-Benz have produced the 'Sport Leicht' aka 'SL' since 1954. This is the third generation first introduced in 1971, world-renowned for its performance, styling, and reliability. The 3.0L engine is mated to a four-speed auto, enclosed in a two-door monocoque shell with independent suspension, coil springs and anti-roll bars at the front and rear. The steering was power-assisted featuring the Daimler-Benz re-circulating ball system. Over its 17 years of production, the R107 was made available to a very wide audience with eight different engine variants.

In 1985 the more efficient 300 SL replaced the 280 SL - the engine was not only larger but also more powerful and more torquey, it also enjoyed the introduction of Bosch’s KE-Jetronic fuel injection system. The KE Jetronic system varied from the earlier, all mechanical system by the introduction of a more modern engine management "computer", which controlled idle speed, fuel rate, and air/fuel mixture.

This example is owned by Sue, who took on ownership from her late father. The car has been in the family since 1995, and is finished in the ever popular "Signal Red" coachwork over black leather interior with red piping. A late facelift model with way under 100,000 miles travelled make this example quite a catch.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Sue the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As much as this car has been loved and cherished by our family since 1995, it deserves to be used on the open road.

Sue's father's pride and joy since 1995 was his bright red Mercedes R107 300 SL. He enjoyed using it occasionally on summer weekends, taking it shows, and even using it as Sue's wedding car! Unfortunately, he passed away a few years ago and left Sue the car. Since then she has dry stored it in her garage, her husband enjoys running the car up to temperature once a week to prevent any mechanical seizing.

The car showed a relatively low mileage for its age on our visit, ~67,780 miles. This SL 300 will be sold with a fresh service and MOT which was undertaken on 4th February. The car is also sold with its jack, toolkit, full-size spare wheel, and hard top as pictured.

Sue will be happy to answer any of your questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The car which associates itself with Hollywood elegance, the SL 300 offers timeless good looks made for the silver screen.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 15" facelift alloys which present in good condition all round. Just some very minor signs of use, with a deep clean/detail we think they'd come up very nicely.

The car is fitted with Maxxis MAP-1 rubber at the front, dated 2009, and Continental Contiecocontact at the rear, dated 2003. The rubber appears in good condition with lots of tread left on. View the images to see the details.

Bodywork

Overall the bodywork is very good. The bodywork appears straight and true, shut lines look even and doors, bonnet and boot all open and close cleanly and precisely. All in all, this looks like a solid example that is in line with the indicated mileage.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the bodywork condition for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a gleaming 'Signal Red', the paint appears in very good condition across the car, even in finish colour and coverage across each panel.

We did notice some slight wear/imperfections that are likely from old repairs; flaking to the corners of the bonnet along with some light lacquer peel on the offside front wing. Some touch-up paint has been applied around the boot of the car, which blends well with the rest of the paintwork.

Again, the images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears to be in very good condition - no areas of distortion or discolouration were noticed.

The fabric roof appears in very good, however, does have a typical little tear/crack on the rear window. The rubber strips along the side of the car have perished and show signs of wear with age, and would benefit from being replaced, along with the front number plate which is also cracked.

The chrome work appears in bright condition around the car, with the slightest signs of pitting beginning to appear.

Interior

The high-quality interior is still clean, elegant, and comfortable 33 years on.

Seats and Carpets

Black leather seats are fitted which have worn well over the years. They do not show any excessive wear or rips and maintain good firmness. The car is fitted with the desirable rear seat option, with a fold-down parcel shelf. Some red pipping has worn on the driver's seat and some genuine leather creases are showing adding character to the cabin.

The door cards, carpets and headlining in both the soft-top and hard-top look great, with no major signs of wear. Take a look for yourself in the detailed interior tour of this R107.

Dashboard

The overall presentation of the facia is good, with no damage to the veneer or the top of the dashboard.

The dials and controls look to be in great condition with no humidity or major wear to the instrument binnacles - looking in line with the rest of the interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear stick's condition is in line with the age of the car, with no damage of note observed.

Take a look at the extensive photos and videos for a closer look at the cabin space of this 300 SL.

Mechanics

The 300 SL hit the sweet spot with a very agreeable blend of power and usability.

Engine and Gearbox

In 1985 the more efficient 300 SL replaced the 280 SL - the engine was not only larger but also more powerful and torquey, and enjoyed the introduction of Bosch’s KE-Jetronic fuel injection system.

This example had significant expenditure on the top end of the engine in 2013, ~2,000 miles covered since then, see the paperwork gallery for the details. Sue reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth four-speed auto gearbox powering the rear wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around town, and for a closer look underneath.

Suspension and Brakes

From the 1986 model year onwards the suspension and brakes of the 300 SL were also improved over its predecessor.

Sue confirms brakes and suspension work exactly as they should. The car stops evenly and cleanly as can be seen in the 'On The Road' video.

The Drive

Sophisticated, smooth, and refined would be used to describe a driving experience in the R107 300 SL. It's a car that loves to be driven and is now looking for a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast to enjoy and give it a little TLC.

Electrics and Other

The car is equipped with a Becker Europa Cassette player. Switches and dials all appear in good condition and Sue confirms all electrics work as they should to her knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A desirable later facelift R107, in the ever popular Signal Red with black leather interior and rear seat, this UK car coming to market from ~29 years family ownership looks a good solid buy.

This car is coming out of 1.5 years of ownership with Sue and 27 years within the family - her father regularly had the car serviced in line with the Mercedes-Benz recommendations, which can be seen documented in the paperwork media. The car is sold with a fresh MOT and service actioned on the 4th February. With the valve stems etc worked on in 2013 just ~2,000 miles ago, it makes it a solid example with just some superficial areas for the new owner to attend to.

The car comes with its tool kit and jack with a full-size spare wheel in the boot of the car, the hardtop is also included in the sale of the car.

Sue will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
