The R107, a powerful and beautiful classic known for its elegant lines yet sporty nature.

The R107 was one of Mercedes-Benz's longest single series cars ever to be produced. It saw 18 years of production, today the R107 is a very popular classic choice from the '80s.

A lot of fans actually prefer the 3.0L straight-six, arguing that it is more in keeping with the Pagoda that precedes it. The 300SL is a great grand tourer offering a balance of comfort, performance and fuel economy, ideal for any country-hopping trip around Europe.

This particular example is coming out of 2.5 years of ownership, Adam has really given the car the attention it deserves and the matching hardtop is included in the sale.

I've always fancied a 300 SL - when I saw this example finished in beautiful red paint and cream leather I knew it was the one.

Adam is the proud owner of this 1989 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. He has owned the car for the previous 2.5 years and has always given it the attention it deserves.

Over the previous year, Adam hasn't been able to use the car as much as he would have liked to and has decided to ask us to find a new home.

Exterior

An assertive front end facelift with strong horizontal design elements - no wonder why they are a firm favourite amongst collectors'.

Wheels and Tyres

This R107 is equipped with the original facelift 15” wheels wrapped in GT Radial Champiro GTX-65 rubber.

We think the wheels look in good original condition. They would benefit from some light refurbishment as they have a few age-related marks. Adam reports a healthy amount of tyre tread left on the Champrio’s, ready for the new owner to enjoy.

Bodywork

A really lovely example, each panel looks good on this example with all the gaps looking right.

Adam has kept the car in tip-top condition over his ownership, we only noticed some surface rust under the bonnet which can be seen in the mechanical photos.

Paint

A great choice of paint which suits the 300 SL body shape well. While looking around the car, we thought the finish was very good throughout, the lustre is deep and show evidence of care during Adam’s ownership.

There are just a few age related marks as you would expect - please take a look a the exterior videos to see the paintwork from multiple angles and the deep lustre.

Glass and Trim

The R107 is fitted with lots of chrome trim, which looks in good condition around the car. The glass panels also look inline with the age and mileage of the car.

We did notice some cracking on the rubber boot seals. The soft top roof has some holes in typical locations for an R107; the rear quarter windows, the fabric fold between the rear plastic window and quarter windows. Included within the sale is the matching hard top roof, which as you can see looks in great condition as well.

Interior

Mercedes cars from this era have a certain quality and luxurious familiar feel to them - this R107 is no different.

Seats and Carpets

These seats were really built to last, 32 years later the cream finish still looks great with very little wear. The cream interior looks great against the contrast of the bright red paintwork - a timeless colour palette.

The carpets also look inline with the age and mileage of the car. The interior of the car would benefit from a light detail throughout, however, we are really impressed how well it's stood the test of time.

Dashboard

This car is fitted with the classic '80s Mercedes wood veneer which separates the dashboard from the centre console.

Overall this dashboard looks in good condition. The car has three main oval dials which supply you with the driver information. Adam reports that the gauges and dials are working correctly and true as you would expect.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic Mercedes-Benz steering wheel with automatic gear stick will be a familiar sight to anyone who’s driven an ‘80s Mercedes before.

The cabin offers a luxurious cruising experience, the only thing that will distract you will be the views, as you joyfully motor down to the south of Europe.

Mechanics

A powerful 3.0L straight-six fills the engine bay - nicely in keeping with the Pagoda that preceded it.

Engine and Gearbox

The fantastic 3.0L straight-six delivers all the power you'll ever need to the back wheels. It makes long-distance journeys a breeze - a perfect cruiser that will save you money at the pumps too.

Adam assures us that the engine and gearbox are in great condition and both run smoothly. We caught the 300 SL starting from cold in the mechanical videos which confirms this. Adam has always given the car the mechanical attention it deserves and it shows.

We did notice signs of a small oil leak under the engine that would need to be looked soon.

Suspension and Brakes

R107 investors prefer post ’86 cars for their firmer ride, better handling and control. The brakes aren’t short on performance either, reassuring the driver by taming the speeds you’ll easily be able to pick up in this grand tourer.

Adam has always been sure to carry out maintenance and refurbishment to the suspension and brakes when required.

The Drive

The drive is the real reason you buy the car, whether you’re cruising to town or on a mighty European road trip the 300SL will never disappoint.

Adam reports a brilliant drive in this 300 SL, one you have to experience to really appreciate. He’s only taken the car out in the Summer and mention it’s a real conversation starter.

Electrics and Other

Adam reports that all the electrics are working well and as expected to his knowledge. It’s been fitted with a modern aftermarket radio and the aircon has always been attended to when a refresh has been required.

I have never had any problems with any leaks and would think at some stage the bulk head would have been treated .
The whole car has been under sealed with new shocks , stainless steel Exhaust .All done before my ownership ..
