Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

A timeless Mercedes-Benz roadster, combining elegant 1980s styling, smooth six-cylinder performance and refined open-top motoring.

Introduced in 1971, the Mercedes-Benz R107 SL became one of the marque’s most enduring open-top models. Replacing the W113 Pagoda, the R107 brought a more substantial design, improved safety and greater refinement, establishing itself as a luxurious two-seat roadster suited to both relaxed touring and everyday use. Its clean lines, distinctive front grille and carefully proportioned bodywork have helped it remain a much-loved classic.

The 300 SL joined the range in the mid-1980s, powered by Mercedes-Benz’s 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine. Paired with an automatic gearbox, it offered smooth, accessible performance and the relaxed driving character expected of a grand touring Mercedes-Benz. The R107’s combination of traditional engineering, solid build quality and understated styling helped make it one of the defining luxury roadsters of its era.

This 1989 example comes to market from ~37 years with our vendor, it is finished in white and features a four-speed automatic gearbox, offering the classic R107 experience with the convenience of automatic transmission. As one of the later cars in the R107 production run, it represents an appealing opportunity to enjoy a classic Mercedes-Benz convertible with timeless styling and a reputation for long-distance comfort.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Arvind the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We’ve cherished this R107 roadster for ~37 years. It’s been a dream to own.

Arvind purchased this Mercedes-Benz 300 SL in 1989 as a surprise birthday present for his wife, making it a particularly special addition to the family. The R107’s elegant styling, comfortable cabin and effortless grand touring character made it a fitting gift, and the car has a lovely story dating back to its early years.

On 16 April 2025, the Mercedes was involved in an accident which resulted in repair work totalling ~£6,800. Arvind reports that the incident occurred at low speed in stop-start traffic, resulting in damage to the front of the car. The work included repairs and replacement parts for the bonnet, front bumpers, grille, radiator grille cover, front reinforcers, star emblem, various trim pieces and protection rails, alongside paintwork.

This 1989 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL offers the appeal of a classic open-top Mercedes with a personal history spanning decades. Arvind will be on hand in the comments below to answer any questions you may have about the car.

Exterior

Elegant roadster styling with classic Mercedes-Benz character.

Wheels and Tyres

These 15” flat-face "Dustbin Lid" R107 wheels look great, finished in silver. Each wheel is in good condition, these being the standard face-lift wheels. On close inspection we did notice some very minor curb marks.

The wheels are fitted with Michelin Energy Saver tyres all round, dated 2012. They appear to be in good visual condition, with a good amount of remaining tread and no visible cracking on the outside sidewalls.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork appears to be in great overall condition, with the panel gaps appearing visually consistent around the car.

There are some minor age-related imperfections, including light bubbling above the O/S/F headlight and a dent above the O/S/R brake light.

We've provided more detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in a lovely shade of white, the paintwork presents well overall, with even colour and coverage across the panels. There are, however, some areas that would benefit from attention, including slight paint wear to the trim above the front fog light, a deep scratch on the O/S/R arch, paint wear above the O/S/R brake light, and a small area of flaking paint and rust on the N/S door.

Once again, we've captured high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the paintwork for yourselves.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition for the car’s age, during our visit we didn’t notice any obvious cracks or discolouration.

The window seals appear good and consistent with the overall condition of the car.

The door handles and window surrounds also present well, as do the convertible roof and detachable hardtop.

image

Interior

A refined cabin designed for relaxed grand touring.

Seats and Carpets

The cream leather seats with cloth inserts, have retained their shape well over the years.

The door cards and carpets present in a similar manner, showing consistent condition throughout the interior.

For a detailed view of the cabin, please take a look at the extensive media.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard in this Mercedes 300SL shows no major damage or scuffs during our visit.

The odometer displayed ~49,143 miles on the odometer at the time of consignment.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The four spoke Mercedes Black leather steering wheel is in great condition.

The automatic gear selector also looked in good shape too, both consistent with the condition of the car.

For a closer look, check out the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

Proven Mercedes-Benz engineering with smooth six-cylinder performance.

Engine and Gearbox

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL is powered by a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine, offering smooth power delivery and the refined performance that suits the R107’s grand touring character. Paired with a four-speed automatic gearbox, the drivetrain is designed to deliver relaxed, effortless motoring, whether cruising through town or covering longer distances.

Arvind reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well, with its four-speed automatic gearbox sending the power to the rear wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the Mercedes-Benz.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The R107 was engineered to provide a comfortable and composed driving experience, combining independent suspension with a well-balanced chassis suited to relaxed touring. Its traditional rear-wheel-drive layout and power-assisted braking system complement the car’s character, offering a reassuring feel on the road while retaining the solid engineering expected of a Mercedes-Benz from this era.

We cover the underside of the Mercedes-Benz exterior in our “Mechanical” gallery section. Head over to our video section, where we’ve summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself.

image

The Drive

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL offers a different take on the traditional sports car, prioritising smooth performance, comfort and relaxed open-top motoring. Its straight-six engine and four-speed automatic gearbox make it well suited to longer journeys, while the R107’s classic proportions and distinctive styling ensure it remains an appealing car to take out for a drive.

With its elegant design and refined character, the 300 SL captures the appeal of Mercedes-Benz grand touring from the late 1980s.

Please have a look at the ‘On The Road’ video where Arvind takes us for a short drive.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
