Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Classic Mercedes style meets effortless performance - the 300 SL is a true icon, blending luxury engineering with open-top driving excitement.

The 300 SL (R107) represents the very essence of Mercedes-Benz’s golden era of engineering, blending timeless design with durability, comfort, and performance. Part of the legendary R107 series, which ran from 1971 to 1989, the 300 SL was one of the final iterations of this iconic model line - a car that became synonymous with elegance and sophistication across the globe.

The model’s reputation for build quality and mechanical resilience only added to its appeal, making it a favourite of celebrities, professionals, and motoring enthusiasts alike. As the curtain closed on nearly two decades of R107 production in 1989, the 300 SL stood as a culmination of Mercedes’ commitment to excellence.

This example comes to market after around five years with our vendor. It would benefit from some attention, particularly to the fabric roof and bonnet, but with these and a few other minor areas addressed, it has the potential to become a very usable and enjoyable car – with room to add value along the way.

It is offered complete with its hardtop and a current MOT valid until 2nd June 2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Nick the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Known for its long, graceful lines, wide stance, and unmistakable road presence, the 300 SL offered the perfect balance between grand tourer luxury and everyday usability.

Wheels and Tyres

The Mercedes is fitted with 15" alloy wheels, they look in good condition overall but we noted a few signs of kerbing, lacquer peel and marking to the finish. Ideally, the wheels would benefit from future restorative work, although are perfectly functional as they are.

The car is fitted with a set of Kpatos FM601 tyres to the front, with a tread specification of 205/65 and date codes from 2024. To the rear, the car is fitted with a mixture of Kpatos and Rapid tyres and a spec of 205/65.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Mercedes and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

Looking over the 300 SL during our visit, we noted that the car maintains good visual panel gaps, and both doors and the bonnet open and close smoothly. We didn't observe any major dings or dents.

There was a small spot of corrosion noted to the rear tailgate and areas of corrosion to the bonnet edge on the drivers side.

We weren't able to access the boot during our visit to the car.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The black paint coat is even in finish across all the panels, overall showing in respectable condition.

We noted a couple of stone chips to the bonnet, slight scratches to the boot edge, marks to the front and rear panels and the drivers side door edge, although these areas were in line with its age.

There were signs of swirl marks to the finish although this is fairly common for black cars and would benefit from a machine polish.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows, front and rear lights all appear in nice condition, and we could see no signs of major scratching or any chips on the glass.

Badges and motifs are all present and look good in their presentation; just a clean up required.

The chromework showed with a few areas of tarnishing particularly on the rear of the car.

We didn't note any issues on the seals on the exterior and these areas showed to be in-line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The interior cabin trim sections showed well - just a couple of minor marks to the door cards.

The hard top showed in good condition although the soft top would need replacing (or repairing).

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

The 300 SL showcases classic Mercedes luxury in its refined cabin - a blend of leather, wood trim, and smart design features that makes every drive feel special.

Seats and Carpets

The Mercedes is fitted with a cream leather interior and overall, the seats look in nice condition - there were some minor wear to the driver's bolster and notes of leather cracking as to be expected.

The rear seats also reflect the same condition here, again just minor cracking to the leather. We didn't note any concerns with rips or tears to the seats.

The main carpet of the interior showed in good condition, although looking underneath the mats showed the flooring was a little damp when we viewed the car. As mentioned, we weren't able to access the boot on our visit.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The dash across the centre console all appears in great condition and the 3 dial set-up in front of the driver, shows very well and free from fogging or scratching.

The odometer showed with ~160,490 miles at the time of our visit.

We noted there was a warning light for the coolant level when out in the car, although after around ~30 minutes out in the car, this light turned off. There was a warning light for one of the exterior bulbs that appeared later into the journey. The speedometer unfortunately wasn't working when starting up the car and out on the road.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Mercedes steering wheel is fitted with a black leather grip and is in nice condition.

The automatic gear selector also appears to be in good condition and showed no real issues.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and check over the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Fitted with a 3.0L straight-six, producing ~185 BHP and 0–60 MPH in under ~9 seconds from factory, the 300 SL delivers a perfect balance of refinement and performance.

Engine and Gearbox

Upon starting the car, the engine turned over on the first turn of the key although did take a little while to warm up the fuel pump. There was a squeaking noise from the engine which suggested the engine could benefit from a little attention to remedy.

We took the car out on local city roads to get a better feel for its performance. Through the drive, we shifted through the gears, saw how the car handles and noted no concerning issues with performance once it was out and running. We found that the engine and auto gearbox operated as to be expected for an older car on our journey out.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, showed a few signs of corrosion and age.

The car sat true on the road, although the steering wheel position appeared slightly out. This didn't affect the handling, although may be worth noting by the future owner.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem, and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

The Mercedes-Benz is defined by its refinement and composure, and with smooth power delivery from its straight-six engine, precise steering, and a comfortable suspension setup, it strikes a perfect balance between relaxed cruising and confident performance.

No matter the journey, the 300 SL delivers the effortless elegance and assured handling that made Mercedes-Benz a benchmark of luxury motoring in the 1980s.

Please take a moment to view the On-the-Road video to see the car starting and being driven around the local area.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in good condition overall.

The Mercedes is equipped with a Kenwood CD stereo, although we were unable to verify its operation when visiting the car.

We weren't able to fully test all of the functions when visiting the car, although we did confirm the electric windows were operational, along with the fans and blowers in the cabin.

History and Paperwork

This example offers an excellent opportunity for an enthusiast to take on a light project and add real value - especially given the significant saving compared to fully sorted examples currently on the market.

The 300 SL comes with its service book with 30 service stamps, it also comes with various invoices from over the years and MOT certificates back to 1997.

It has had a new cylinder head in 2001.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
