Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

This is one Mercedes-Benz suited in its day to world leaders and celebrities - the W126 was Mercedes-Benz's attempt to create the best car in the world - who are we to disagree?

Launched in 1979, the W126 Mercedes followed on from the successful W116 model, which was being run out. The new W126 was designed by Bruno Sacco, who simplified and straightened the lines of the Mercedes, creating a sleeker design with greatly improved aerodynamics. The new S-Class came available as a saloon, a pillarless coupe, the SEC or the longer SEL. Launched initially with the 3.8 litre, which was reported to be underpowered for the huge car, 12 months later, the 5.0 litre was introduced, and arguably the king of V8s, the 5.6 litre, which is the model we have here.

This 560 SEL was the biggest and best Mercedes-Benz you could buy at the time; being the choice for world leaders and A-list celebrities, it was only the rich and famous who had the pleasure of being part of the SEL group. You can now be a part of the group with this fantastic 1990 560 SEL we have on offer.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Mike the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The history is impressive for this Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL - it was a car I couldn’t miss out on owning.

Mike is the owner of the presidential 1990 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL and has owned the car for just over two years. In that time, he hasn’t really used it a great deal. Usually, it’s been used to pop down to his favourite restaurant, where it never fails to turn heads, as you can imagine.

What attracted Mercedes enthusiast Mike to the 560 was not only the rarity and condition of the car, but one other thing, the amount of paperwork and service stamps are mind-blowing, as you will see.

Mike had decided to reduce his collection, which is the only reason he’s parting with the luxurious Mercedes.

Please feel free to ask Mike any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The luxurious limo sized 560 SEL is in excellent condition, finished in Blue-Black Metallic.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are the originals which are generally in good order, but there is some slight corrosion to the faces. With that said, it wouldn’t be much of a job to get them refurbished by your local wheel specialist.

The tyres are in good condition with a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Looking around the exterior of the 560 SEL and there is a lot of it! We are pleased to say that the doors look to align as they should, along with the bonnet and boot. The electric sunroof is working as it should, opening and closing with the touch of a button. Unfortunately, there are a couple of very small areas of blistering to the rear nearside wheel arch where it meets the bumper, and a tiny amount by the rear door handle. Mike was looking into getting this done but felt it was better to leave it in its original state.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior and underside to make up your own mind as to the condition of this car.

Paint

As mentioned, the Mercedes is finished in Blue-Black metallic. The boot lid has been repainted at some point, but the rest is thought to be original, although obviously, we cannot vouch for this. Nevertheless, the vehicle presents exceptionally well and has a deep shine with no prominent areas of concern.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off this stunning Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL at its absolute best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in excellent condition, and there are no apparent scratches to mention. The rear half of the car has privacy tints that look free from any scratches. The chrome window trims are all in good condition with just some fine age related marks as you would expect.

The headlights have a nice bright finish and are free from any cracks in the lenses. The chrome grille is free from any damage, and the three-pointed star sits in pride of place. The classic Mercedes ribbed rear lights are in good condition.

Please see our detailed gallery showing the whole exterior.

Interior

Sprung seats and grey leather - do you really need anything else to make you feel like you’re in your favourite armchair?

Seats and Carpets

This is a true testament to the quality of the materials used when building this 1990 Mercedes, particularly the leather. As you can see, the driver's seat is usually the one to take most of the wear. Looking at it, you would never say it had covered 229,706 miles. The condition is superb, with just a small amount of patina showing. With that being the worst, the rest are excellent, both to the front and rear. The door cards to each door are also in good condition, with no damage to point out.

The carpets have been protected with a set of Mercedes mats. These are still in good condition, and lifting them shows that the carpet is also in brilliant order. Inside the boot area, the spare wheel is present along with the jack and tool kit, followed by the warning triangle mounted to the boot lid.

Please see the interior gallery section for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good order, and the burled walnut trim has no signs of cracking to the lacquered finish. However, a small amount has split on the passenger side, which can only be seen when the door is open. We suspect this could possibly be glued back together. The instruments are working as they should, and no warning lights are displayed when the engine runs. The odometer shows a reading of ~229,706 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is original and in good order. Just some light shining to the wheel's rim, which is less than the mileage would suggest. The gear knob is also in good order and, being automatic; it hasn’t accumulated any excessive wear.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

5.6 litres of your finest German engineering sits at the heart of the 560 SEL - the fuel-injected engine produces 279bhp with 317lb-ft of torque and will happily sit cruising for as long as you can stay awake (safely of course)!

Engine and Gearbox

The engine in the Mercedes has been meticulously maintained, as you can see from the service history. It has basically had everything needed to keep it in tip-top condition. Over time, the 560 has seen a whole host of new parts such as fuel pumps, valve guides, ECU, stainless steel exhaust, timing chain and tensioners, plus many many more components, which can be seen on the relevant paperwork in the documents section.

The car starts up as it should and sounds excellent, with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay. The gearbox has a smooth change and again raises no area for concern when moving along in the car.

Suspension and Brakes

The 560 SEL is a fantastic car to be inside. The ride is nice and smooth with its sprung seats, with no noises coming from the suspension. The brakes are working as they should, bringing the Mercedes to a halt in a straight line, with no juddering through the brake pedal.

It should also be mentioned that the car's underside is in excellent order, with just some small amounts of surface corrosion to some of the suspension components. Still, the floor is in exceptional condition for the age of the vehicle.

The Drive

This is one car which turns heads, and rightly so! It looks fantastic and has a considerable presence when out on the road. Perfect for cruising up and down the country, the Mercedes will happily take you where you need in the uppermost comfort, especially as a back seat passenger with lots of room and the original footrests in situ.

Electrics and Other

Everything is reported to be working as it should. An additional parrot hands-free kit has been fitted, enabling you to connect your phone. There is some light wear to the heater controls and switches, but well in keeping with the mileage covered.

History and Paperwork

The paperwork for this 560 SEL will blow your mind - there are over ~£35,000 worth of invoices for parts and work carried out.

As you can see, the number of service stamps speak for themselves with this vehicle, backed up with invoices listing anything and everything which has been fitted over the years - and trust us, it is a lot! Not something you want to start going through unless you have several hours free.

The seller has put a fresh MOT on the vehicle even though it wasn't due until October. The current MOT now expires on the 22nd March 2023, and it passed with no advisories.

It is a rare and sought after 1990 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL in superb condition with an eyewatering amount of history. Enough to give the new keeper peace of mind that it's been exceptionally well maintained.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Sorry, another question.

I presume the car needs a service, with the last service being 7000 miles ago and at March 2021.

Cheers

A couple of questions.

Can you confirm the condition of the rear parcel shelf. Any rust under there.

Any idea what happened between 2001 and 2016, no service records.
