Introduction

Kulraj Singh Salh
COO

Short wheel base, boxy good looks, and that rugged all terrain build quality propelled the "G" into popularity.

The Geländewagen as it was once known, now G-Wagen in popular culture, was first designed and built for use by the military (the first reported to be the army of Argentina). The W463 variant, like this one, was produced as a civilian car and marketed as a "Luxury SUV" to compete with the likes of the Range Rover.

The particular example is a UK RHD model, a 3 door short wheel base version, and comes with a whole host of provenance. It's the 300 GD, featuring a straight six diesel engine and manual gearbox.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Surjit the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is the third one i've owned... what can I say, I like G Wagens!

Surjit definitely fits the category of "petrolhead". He's been lucky enough to own a whole host of cars over the years, and has a habit of collect ones that he knows inside out.

He's going through a bit of a change now with regards the cars he owns, focusing a bit more on relaxed GT cars, but he'll be keeping one of his G Wagons as a workhorse for a long time to come.

Exterior

Utilitarian styling at its best, the short wheel base G-Wagen's classic looks are timeless.

Wheels and Tyres

16" 5 spoke wheels all around, and wrapped in proper off road Continental CrossContact AT tyres.

The tyres have loads of tread and look in very good condition, the same for the wheels too. The 16" sizing gives loads of room for travel when using this car off road, just what it was designed for.

Bodywork

Even in the SWB format, this is a big car. Big panels with that distinctive styling.

We didn't notice any imperfections in the bodywork when we photographed and video'd the car, a very fine example indeed. Looking over all the panels, leading edges etc, no sign of any corrosion either. Take a look at the extensive video review to see the detail.

Paint

Finished in a beautiful dark blue known as "Nautical Blau", the colour actually makes the car look more modern than it is.

The finish on the paint is excellent, even in finish and colour across all the panels. Colour coded panels and trim really finish off the look on this one.

Glass and Trim

All the trim looks good, we noticed some bits of plastic needed a bit of thorough cleaning for, but all in place and looking good.

Surjit fitted some smart protective grills for the headlights on this car, and the glass is looking good across the car. On the offside rear window, there appears to be a bit of light scratching as you'll see in the photos.

Interior

The W463 was Mercedes-Benz's entry in to the "Luxury SUV" market, gone was the panel van rear.

Seats and Carpets

A smart grey cloth interior finish on this example. The car is fitted with rear seats too, accessible via a clever lift and tilt mechanism on the seats.

Matching grey carpets present in good condition. The passenger seat has some spillage marks on it as observed in the images, but all the other seats look very clean and in great condition.

Dashboard

An unmistakable Mercedes dashboard, with the controls for the 3 locking diffs front and centre on the central console area.

Everything presents in very good condition, in line with the cars mileage and age, take a look at the video review to see the detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Nothing fancy here, this is a utilitarian designed vehicle after all. A classic big Mercedes-Benz steering wheel, and controls for the gears in a similarly unfussy black finish.

Both present in good condition, no defects just showing their age in the form of some patina. Watch the video review for a closer look.

Mechanics

Designed for all terrain use, one of the only vehicles to feature 3 fully locking differentials to make sure you're never caught short.

Engine and Gearbox

This car features the straight six 3.0L diesel engine, pushing out some 111BHP and importantly 141 lb ft of torque.

The engine sprang into life on the cold start video, and after a while settled down to a smooth tick over. Some smoke coming from the exhaust on cold like you'd expect on a diesel of this age, we also recorded the car at norma operating temperature with no exhaust smoke present.

Suspension and Brakes

Big wheel arches allowing for all important travel when off road in this G-Wagon.

You can get a good view of the underside suspension components in the media we've taken, and we didn't observe and knocks or rattles from the suspension at all.

The Drive

We took the car on a little off road lap around our office, captured at the end of the video.

These cars were built to handle much greater challenges than what we put it through, but it still felt good to put it through a bit of a test.

Electrics and Other

All operating as they should do to Surjit's knowledge.

Although marketed as a luxury SUV, the early models like this one don't have a whole host of features like the later models. This one has been fitted with hand-free phone connections etc.

History and Paperwork

A UK RHD example, lots of history and provenance to show that this is a well cared for G-Wagen.

A very smart G-Wagen, you'll often see examples that are starting to show their age through rust and tired interiors, but this is clearly an example that has been cared for.

Coming with a full set of keys, and nice touches like the original Mercedes-Benz toolkit and emergency kit in the boot, there is also a whole host of invoices with the stamped up service book charting the life of the car.

Please note, the private registration number will not be sold with the car, it will be returned to the original registration number.

We've carried out our usual seller and car checks verifying the V5, HPi clear, and ID of the owner.
