One of the most thoroughly engineered convertibles ever made - boxy good looks and a whole lot of power under the hood, introducing the R129 SL 500.

The R129 is a sporty roadster built by Mercedes-Benz from 1989-2001 - its development began in 1984 based on the shortened floorpan of the Mercedes-Benz W124, once production started it came runner-up for the European Car of the Year award in 1989.

The SL 500 is fitted with a bullet proof M119 5.0L V8 engine - packing more power than some Italian sports cars on sale at the same time.

The SL 500 was also one of the safest cars ever built, with its ‘Wunderbar’ (an automatic roll bar) which deploys within milliseconds of the car flipping over. Even to this day, it’s considered an extremely safe sports car to own.

We've found this meticulously owned example in an undoubtedly cool colourway with stunning AMG wheels.

Meet the owner

I bought this car to satisfy all my weekend driving needs - it's one of the most comfortable and powerful cars I've ever owned.

Peter has owned this SL 500 for the past four years and he's loved getting it out very occasionally on dry days. Peter took his time to find the perfect car for him, it had to be a SL 500 and one in excellent condition with a timeless colour combination - this stunning example in Pearl Grey paint really fitted the bill.

After many great road trips the car isn't now getting the use it once enjoyed, and so Peter has asked us to find a new owner.

You already know that we only take on the best examples - there are lots of low-quality / high mileage examples out there but this isn't one of them. This car has only cover ~59,000 miles since new and with only 4 previous owners it makes for a very desirable modern classic ready to be enjoyed this year.

Exterior

Finished in a striking grey over the grey colourway which suits the '90s body shape so very well.

Wheels and Tyres

Stunning dark glossy grey 5-spoke 18" AMG alloys are fitted that just set the car apart from other R129s on the market. They appear in excellent condition with no significant curving or corrosion to note - very well cared for over their life and they were refurbished in 2015 too.

Each wheel is wrapped with premium Bridgestone Potenza, which appears to have plenty of tread left on for the new owner to enjoy the car to the max this summer.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks really good - all the panel gaps and shut lines along with the doors, bonnet and boot look good too. Peter reports the doors hang well off their hinges and open and close with ease.

Peter also mentions the soft top is in good order, opening and closing as it should.

Paint

The paintwork appears very good with even lustre across all the panels.

Being picky, we did notice some very minor stone chips to the front nose and around the rear wheel arches.

We love the grey colour scheme with the darker wheels and convertible roof - perfect for the term 'modern classic'.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition all around the car and in line with the mileage - the trim/rubber seals look great too.

Interior

The Alpaca grey leather interior allows you to travel in comfort - '90s style.

Seats and Carpets

Alpaca grey leather seats fill the interior with matching carpets and wood veneer trim on the centre console; all are presented in excellent condition.

The driver's seat appears to have some very light creases with no significant marks to point out.

Both front seats are fully electrically adjustable with memory settings, the boot lining appears in good order too, with a full-size spare wheel underneath.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car, a really nice example.

A clean and smart dash and instrument cluster, all the numbers are clean, clear and legible.

The odometer was showing ~59,000 on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic Mercedes-Benz 4 spoke steering wheel from the ‘90s.

A big steering wheel lets you maneuver this sports car with ease, and looks in excellent condition along with the automatic gear selector.

Mechanics

The robust V8 will offer you all the power you'll ever need - 322bhp at the touch of a pedal.

Engine and Gearbox

This example is fitted with a 322bhp naturally aspirated 5L 32v quad-cam V8 petrol engine that will take you to 62mph in 6.2s and will reach 155mph - tonnes of power with minimal effort - a proper GT car.

Peter has sparingly used the beautiful SL 500 over his 4 years of ownership, he mentions it’s a very powerful engine and assures us it’s never skipped a beat during his ownership.

Suspension and Brakes

The front suspension in this SL 500 has independent damper struts whereas the rear suspension has an independent 5-arm multilink. Peter assures us of a very smooth ride.

The brakes on this car also feature 2-circuit hydraulic power-assisted wheel discs with ABS. Peter also reports the car drives just as it should and stops on demand too.

The Drive

The ultimate car for any road trip, thoroughly engineered with more power than you could ask for.

It's a sophisticated car and a desirable modern classic, offering luxurious cruising with endless performance a pedal press away.

Electrics and Other

Peter reports all the electrics on this car are working as they should to his knowledge.

An online check of the factory-build information shows the car was fitted with front electrically adjustable seats with memory functions, adjustable mirrors with memory, anti-theft / anti-break-in warning system, air-conditioning and wipers for the front headlamps.
