Introduction

Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Sleek, elegant, agile and capable - few can match Mercedes-Benz in their ability to fuse form and function.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL 24V (R129) was introduced to the world at the Geneva Motor Show in 1989, continuing a long-standing Mercedes tradition of elegant, well-engineered roadsters. Not only was the car launched to a 3-year waiting list, but it also met widespread approval from the motoring press who praised the innovation, handling, and agility. The naturally aspirated, in-line, 6-cylinder engine delivers 228BHP to the rear wheels through a smooth, five speed automatic gearbox. The car can achieve a factory specified 0-60 in around 8 seconds and a top speed of 149MPH – pretty good, even by today’s standards!

It’s easy to see why the original customers were prepared to wait three years to get their hands on the R129. Coming from the Mercedes stable the SL 300 inevitably looks great, drives well and is, as ever, beautifully engineered, ensuring these cars have become hugely popular modern classics.

This car comes to auction from 5 years of careful ownership and is presented in two-tone "Brilliant Silver Metallic" over an "Anthracite" leather interior. Surely one of the best Mercedes colourways. Having had the electronics comprehensively checked over by Mercedes specialists at SLShop and with a new MOT, this is an honest classic that’s ready to enjoy at a very reasonable reserve.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’m a child of the 90s and when I was younger these cars were the bees’ knees – I knew, one day, I’d have to own one.

Chris has owned this car for 5 years and has really enjoyed it. He tells us “It looks so cool. The low stance and wide body but still looks really sleek and it’s so well built, everything feels quality”. He goes on to say “I wanted to ensure everything was checked over before I sold the car, so I’ve recently had a lot of electrical work undertaken by the SLShop who are the specialists for all things SL. They have replaced a few modules and re-wired a lot of the car. They’ve also done some mechanical work, including replacing the MAS sensor, so the engine ticks over beautifully”.

When he purchased the car, he had Mercedes specialist Stourbridge Automotive service the car and they replaced the top strut mounts at the front and the lower ball joints, ensuring it drives as it should. It comes to market with us now, and he tells us “I’ve taken a lot of the care with the car, and it’s been a real joy to own – a growing family means I just don’t get full use out of it so I really hope a new owner can enjoy it as much as I have”. Chris is happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Classic Mercedes styling - low stance, clean lines and stunning two-tone Brilliant Silver Metallic colourway.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16-inch, diamond cut, alloy wheels appear in good, serviceable, condition. They have dulled with age as would be expected but show no significant signs of curb damage or scuffing.

The wheels are shod with 225/55/R16 “Landsail” tyres all round with a date mark of 2018. All tyres appear in good condition and have good tread remaining from a quick look. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, panel gaps and shut lines look good while boot, bonnets and doors open and close with precision – exactly what we would expect from Mercedes build quality. The soft top appears in good condition with some age-related wear but no rips or tears that we could see, and the stitching is intact. The car comes with hardtop that appears in good condition and fits properly.

There is some slight bubbling to offside the door edge and some evidence of repairs to the nearside door shut and offside rear wing, but these do not detract significantly from the overall sound presentation of the car. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The two-tone "Brilliant Silver Metallic" (744U) paint finish is great for these cars and shows off the elegant lines perfectly. Overall, the paint presents well and looks consistent and even right across the car. There are some age-related marks and stone chips as would be expected, most notably on the lower part of the front valance where there is some minor damage likely caused by a curb.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows and hood screen all present well, and we could see no sign of significant chips or scratches. Lights, mirrors, and lenses look good with only some minor damage to the top of the offside headlight.

This being an earlier car is finished in a two tone exterior, something that gives it a styling edge now over the later R129s. Trim and badging look sound with some expected stone marks and indentations to the grill.

Interior

The Anthracite leather interior is comfortable and spacious yet has a purposeful, sporty feel, typically Mercedes with luxury and functionality.

Seats and Carpets

The "Anthracite" (271A) leather seats are in good condition and have no rips or tears to note, only some minor wear to the driver’s seat bolster in line with age and mileage.

Seat backs, door cards and headlining all present well and carpets appear clean and in good condition. View the image gallery for details.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks great, and dials appear clear with no scratches or misting to the perspex. All switchgear looks in good condition and Chris assures us everything works as it should. There are two small holes close to the air vents where, we assume, a mobile phone holder has been mounted in the past.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black steering wheel and Mercedes branded centre boss are in excellent condition. The automatic gear selector lever is in good condition, showing some signs of wear. There is some slight damage to the wood veneer on the centre console as shown in the hi resolution images, typical for a R129 of this age.

Mechanics

Light agile handling combines with 3.0L, 228BHP, silky smooth, straight six to deliver a rewarding, communicative and thoroughly entertaining drive.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bay appeared tidy, and we could see no signs of leaks. On our Cold Start the car fired up without hesitation and idled steadily and evenly. Emissions appeared clear and we could see no warning lights on the dash.

On our brief test drive the engine pulled well and changes through the automatic transmission were smooth and slick – Check out the “On the Road” video to see for yourself.

Suspension and Brakes

The R129 featured a whole new suspension system, considered a significant advance on the semi trailing arms used by its predecessor. The suspension felt firm and planted while providing a comfortable ride.

Vented discs front and rear provide plenty of stopping power. Chris assured us that all suspension and brakes work as expected.

The Drive

On our short test drive with Chris the car pulled smoothly with barely perceptible gear changes. the car stopped evenly without any sign of judder and steering seemed precise. We could hear no knocks, bangs or trim rattle and the car felt surefooted and planted.

Check out the On the Road video to share in our experience.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials and gauges appeared in sound condition. The car comes with electric windows and electro/hydraulic hood which works as it should as can be seen from the "Exterior Review" video.

Chris advises that the central locking is not currently working on the remote control although a new remote unit is supplied with the car that would need programming. A Pioneer CD/Radio system is fitted which Chris confirms can play CD’s, but the radio requires tuning. The AC hasn't been used in Chris's ownership and Chris tells us it's not working along with the heater fan being generally not very strong.

The car comes with a new battery that Chris just had changed.

History and Paperwork

Style, performance, handling and luxury – a chance to own a sorted, ready to go example of this Mercedes modern classic.

Chris has gone out of his way to make sure this charming 300SL is ready for its new owner. The electrics have been checked over and replacements made where necessary, a service was carried out fewer than 50 miles ago and the MOT lasts until June 2023.

The history file has extensive paperwork including original manuals and service schedule, details of recent electrical and other works and historic MOT certificates.

The car comes with factory hardtop and stand. A new, un-programmed fob and two keys are included too.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
