Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Embodying everything that made Mercedes-Benz convertibles of the era so desirable - one of the finest open-top grand tourers of the '90s.

Elegant, understated, and built with a clear focus on quality, the Mercedes-Benz E220 Cabriolet stands as a true modern classic from the golden era of Mercedes engineering. Based on the highly regarded W124 platform, it combines solid German build quality with a level of refinement and durability that has helped these cars earn their reputation for being virtually over-engineered.

As a four-seat open-top grand tourer, it offers relaxed, effortless cruising with a smooth and dependable four-cylinder engine, designed to prioritise comfort and usability over outright performance. The cabriolet roof adds another layer of appeal, transforming the car into a refined drop-top cruiser ideal for summer drives and leisurely touring.

Coming from almost 18 years with our vendor this well-equipped, this E220 Cabriolet comes with a Sony CD stereo, power-operated roof, electric comforts throughout, and two keys for added convenience. With ~17 year ownership, only 2 previous owners and a great history file, this example is ready to enjoy.

With its clean, understated styling, high-quality interior materials, and reputation for long-distance comfort, the E220 Cabriolet remains a highly sought-after modern classic.

It captures a time when Mercedes-Benz focused on engineering excellence and enduring build quality, making it a compelling choice for both collectors and enthusiasts alike.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Tony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've really loved this one, but now I feel the Mercedes is ready for the next chapter in its journey.

We met with the current owner, Tony, who shared his long-term experience with the Mercedes-Benz, “I’ve had the car for nearly 18 years now, it’s become more of a friend than just a car. It’s been incredibly reliable and has always felt special to own".

Tony explains that the E220 has mainly been used for holidays rather than daily driving, and has seen very little use in recent years. “It’s just not getting used enough anymore, especially with having three cars now, so it feels like the right time to let it go".

The car has been carefully maintained and serviced in Tony's ownership, largely looked after by Mercedes specialists, with all documentation kept in a dedicated history folder. Tony tells us, "The Merc still drives beautifully, steering is light and handles cornering with ease. In my view, this one feels better than some more modern cars I've owned".

Tony will be happy to answer any questions into the comments section below.

Exterior

Elegant, understated, and unmistakably Mercedes, the E220 blends timeless proportions with classic open-top sophistication.

Wheels and Tyres

Original 15" 'eight-hole' alloy wheels are fitted and present respectably. All appeared to be in fair condition, we didn’t notice any major damage, although there were a few marks here as you'll see in the images.

The front wheels are fitted with Lassa and to the rear, Kumho tyres. Front tyres show with date codes from 2019, and 2021 to the rear. The tread spec notes 195/65 to the front and rear.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The Mercedes bodywork is in really nice condition and it's obvious that it's been well cared for over its lifetime. The car is currently garage stored - part of the reason it looks as good as it does. Looking around the car, there are no major issues that we noted on our visit.

Shut lines are visually equal and matching, as is the bonnet, and both doors. The bonnet, boot and cabriolet roof sections all opened and closed well.

When we looked over the car, we didn't see any major visual signs of marks to the body panels, although we noted a minor pin mark on the passenger side door.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in a smart shade of 'Blue-Black Metallic', this Mercedes-Benz looks every bit the timeless classic. The wings were replaced and resprayed through Tony's ownership in 2012 and it was great to note the colour match was consistent here.

There were a couple of marks on the wing mirrors and a very minor mark on the passenger side door. Considering the car has been on the road for nearly ~31 years, the E220 showed really nicely.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen shows well and the perspex soft top panels look smart, in line with the age. During our visit, we didn't notice any chips or cracks. The other areas of glass, mirrors, lights, and lenses all remain in great condition throughout.

Window seals look great and align with the overall condition of the car. The roof is presented in good condition, with only a few light marks visible where the cabriolet top retracts. Inside, we noted no issues with the headlining.

The body trim is in nice shape, although being picky there was a slight mark on the rear lower bumper, a scuff on the passenger side rear trim and very small mark on the passenger side front bumper edge.

There were a few signs of minor cracking to the walnut trim near the central storage area in the cabin.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

image

Interior

Comfort, elegance, and understated luxury come together in a beautifully finished open-top cabin.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats present well throughout, showing only light signs of age to the bolster sections. Seats retain their shape nicely and remain a comfortable place to spend time on longer journeys.

The carpets and interior trim are similarly well presented, contributing to a cabin that feels clean, well cared for, and ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.

Underneath the carpets, we didn't spot any issues.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The dash shows really well and the walnut trim matched with great levels of presentation, just some slight signs of age to the central sections. We noted no warning lights displayed when driving.

The centre section was smartly presented, in-line with the age of the car. The odometer showed a reading of ~90,068 miles during our visit.

Gauges, controls and interfaces were functioning without concern when starting up the car and out on the road and all dial surfaces were free from fogging.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic and clean black 4-spoke steering wheel is designed with no nonsense in mind and to keep you focused on the road ahead.

The black auto gear selector looks good, aligning with the quality of the car.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and check over the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

image

Mechanics

Smooth and refined, the E220 delivers relaxed power with classic Mercedes composure, perfectly suited to open-top cruising.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by a smooth and refined 2.2-litre engine, the Mercedes was impressive, idling smoothly, running well, and performing as it should on the road.

Tony reports no issues during his ownership, with the automatic gearbox delivering power seamlessly. Out on the drive, the car moved effortlessly through the gears, reinforcing its capable character.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around some local roads, and for a closer look underneath the Mercedes and the engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were driving, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. The underside of the car showed well and we spotted no areas of corrosion looking underneath.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey, and brought the car to a stop without a problem. Overall the car performed as to be expected and without issue on the road.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

Designed for effortless touring rather than outright performance, the Mercedes-Benz E220 delivers the refined, composed driving experience that has long defined the marque.

Its smooth power delivery, supple suspension, and reassuring road manners make it equally at home cruising through the countryside or covering long motorway journeys.

With the roof lowered, it offers relaxed open-top motoring at its very best, combining comfort, refinement, and timeless elegance in a way few modern convertibles can match.

image

Electrics and Other

The Merc features a Sony CD stereo player and is finished with its power assisted cabriolet roof, power steering, electric windows and 2 sets of keys.

The E220 comes complete with a spare wheel, located in the boot.

We weren't able to fully test all of the functions when visiting the car, although Tony told us everything else was in working order.

image

History and Paperwork

~17 years owned, regular specialist servicing and garage stored - a classic modern convertible with effortless style and enduring appeal.

Throughout its current ownership, the car has been carefully maintained and serviced, largely by Mercedes specialists, with all documentation kept in a dedicated history folder. Mechanically it remains in great condition, and Tony tells us it's always been reliable and that he's had no issues with the gearbox.

The MOT certificates, service invoices and works receipts are available to view in the paperwork gallery section. The Mercedes is accompanied by a good history file and a replacement owner’s manual and maintenance records, also presented in the “History and Paperwork” section.

Some of the maintenance items renewed in recent years include:
- New Lambda sensor Oct ’24
- New front wishbones May ’23
- New alarm fitted Oct ’22
- New suspension top mounts and bushes Oct ’22
- Oil Pressure sensor Oct ’22
- New brake pipes Oct ’22
- More shown on documents through the years of ownership.

Tony tells us about two items which do not work but are not required for MOT and are not relevant or essential requirements:
- Headlamp adjustment vacuum
- Bulb failure indicator unit

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
