This is such a classy looking car, which gets nothing but positive attention every time it’s used.

The stunning metallic blue colour really highlights the great lines and I really am a sucker for those flared front arches!

Having covered less than 1500 miles in the 12 months I have owned the car, I have decided put my SL up for auction - if by chance it doesn’t sell then I'll garage it over the winter.

Exterior

A really striking looking car, the design of the R129 SL really was a Mercedes Benz high point. The ‘head on’ view is just stunning.

Wheels and Tyres

The car sits on near perfect 16” eight hole alloys, shod with all season Michelins on the front axle and all season Good Year on the rear.

I also have available a set of four excellent condition 17” Mercedes ‘Albali’ alloys, with Summer Continentals fitted: the successful buyer can if they wish, choose these instead of the set pictured. Only one of the two sets will be included in the sale, but which set is the buyer's choice.

Bodywork

The bodywork really is fantastic: there are no dings or dents present, with all panels straight, similarly there is no rust visible around the car.

Perhaps the highlight of this particular SL is that it comes with the extremely desirable panoramic hardtop, again this is in near perfect condition, and the soft top was replaced last Summer and is as new.

Being very picky there is evidence of a very small number of stone chips on the bonnet and the headlight units would benefit from a buff and clean.

The MOT picked up some surface corrosion underneath, but no rot. I have since treated with two coats of Lanoguard.

Paint

The Azurite blue paintwork really highlights the R129 SL lines. The paint and lacquer across all panels is even and consistent, it polishes up to a deep lustrous finish.

Glass and Trim

The glass and shadow chrome trim are in excellent shape with no chips or scratches.

The soft top rear plastic is free from rips and is clear.

Interior

The interior trim colour provides a great contrast to the deep blue exterior.

Seats and Carpets

The drivers seat has some slight wear to the bolster and a small (2cm) stitching repair is required to the seat cushion. The passenger and rear seats are in very good condition.

The carpets and mats have worn very well.

While the wood trim is in good overall condition, the trim pieces that surround the electric seat switches have warped slightly (this does seem to be a common issue and replacements are readily available at a reasonable cost). There are also a couple of hairline scratches to the lacquer by the auto gear selector.

Dashboard

The instruments on this era of Mercedes are a real ergonomic highlight. The dashboard is as it should be with no cracks or fading.

A couple of things to note are that the main interior light isn’t working (the two footwell ones work on the door opening) and the outside temperature gauge doesn’t show.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The gear selector and steering wheel are believed to be original, and are in good overall condition.

Mechanics

It starts, stops and steers like you would want and expect it to. It really does belie its mileage.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine and gearbox perform very well: hold the gears and it pulls really well.

There is no smoke on start up.

The gearbox was refurbished by a specialist in 2023 at a cost of £1,700.

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides really well, feeling planted on the road. There are no knocks or bangs on the move.

The brakes are progressive and pull the car up straight.

The Drive

The engine starts without any issues and settles to an even idle. The powerful V8 suits the car very well, providing effortless performance.

It readily reaches its operational temperature and doesn’t overheat.

Included in the sale is a wind deflector, which ensures very comfortable top down motoring. The highlight of the Summer was a top down tour of North Wales, during which the car performed faultlessly.

Electrics and Other

All the electrics work and operate, i.e, windows, seats, mirrors.

The soft top opens and closes as it should.

The car is fitted with air conditioning but requires a re-gas. The system was reconditioned in 2023.

History and Paperwork

Very comprehensive documented history, including work done last year by the very well respected SL shop in Stratford.

With fifteen service stamps, the car has been very well maintained: the history over the past ten years is particularly impressive. The car was last serviced in August and has covered less than 300 miles since. There's also plenty of MOT history present.

One of the reasons I bought this particular SL500, aside from the obvious excellent condition and drive, was the previous owner's meticulous record of work and maintenance over the ten years he had it. He spent a lot of money ensuring that the car remained in very good shape.

As detailed the car will come with the Panoramic hard top, also included is the wheeled stand, wind deflector and top half cover.

I realise I’m getting ahead of myself here, but if I were to be successful in the auction, would it be possible to collect the car on Friday 31 October? As I am based in Ireland, I could fly into Manchester airport around lunchtime which I think is close to you. Then I’d catch the 10pm ferry in Holyhead. Do you think that’s workable?

Do you know what the invoices from April 2024 at the SL shop were for (shown in images 19 and 21 of the History and Paperwork section). They just say Stage 1 (£3023) and Stage 2 (£1037).

The work done by the SL Shop was for : investigation and rectification of ASR, throttle body repair, replace and fit distributor and rotor arms, new battery and wipers.

First of all, well done on keeping the car in such good condition! Judging from the images, you’ve done a great job and a lot of care taken.

Can you tell me a little more about the “Rear Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))” advisory the car got on the last MOT? Do you feel the Lanoguard has done the trick and its not getting to this category: https://www.theslshop.com/journal/2022/04/07/the-r129-sl-killer/

Hi, thanks for the kind comment!
I have had a look at the link, and I wouldn’t say that the subframe is anywhere as bad as the one shown. I have used Lanoguard before on an MX5, I owned the car for a further 18 months before I sold it on to a family member. I was happy with the protection and condition of the underside.
