The W220 is the epitome of luxury travel; comfort, power and heaps of technology.

The S-Class, formerly known as the Sonderklasse or "special class" has been in production for the past 67 years, and this is the 4th series known as the W220.

There was a significant change in design to the predecessor, which expressed elegance and modernity with it's curvy and sleek body shape. Although having a smaller body than the W140 it was actually roomier inside.

Most W220 have travelled over 100k miles these days, and so we're proud to bring this ~64,500-mile example with just 2 previous owners to auction.

Meet the owner

It's a lovely car in great condition, but with all these lockdowns it's a bit surplus to requirement for me.

Mick owns this lovely relatively-low mileage W220 S280 in green. He got the opportunity to purchase the car in November as a luxury classic and is now looking to pass on ownership to a like-minded S-Class enthusiast.

This car has seen relatively little use compared to other S-Class examples, and clearly has been well cared for over its life. Finished in a beautiful "Alexandrite Green" which really sets it apart from the more common silver ones you'll see on the market.

Exterior

The limousine of choice for all the right reasons.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 16" alloys and wrapped in Continental Conti Premium Contact 2 tyres which appear to have plenty of tread left on them.

The only thing to note is there is some very minor curb rash around the outers of the alloys, with a little attention and touching up these alloys could look excellent. Take a look at the photographs of each wheel.

Bodywork

All the panel gaps look tight and correct as you would expect from a luxury saloon of this calibre.

Each panel looks to match the age and mileage of the car, please view the exterior videos to view each panel from many angles and to really appreciate the bodywork.

Paint

The paint looks great on this example, and the colour really sets the car apart from the other S-Class' on the road today.

As you would expect the paint is even in finish and colour across all panels.

The only thing to note is some very minor stone chips around the wheel arches and some very minor scratches, more visible near the nearside rear panel that look like they would buff out. There's a small mark on the rear bumper too.

Glass and Trim

All the glass and chrome trim is in excellent condition, the glass looks clean and free from any major cracks, chips or scratches.

Interior

Smaller on the outside, large on the inside - refined spacious luxury.

Seats and Carpets

The "Java" coloured leather inside this cabin still looks great to this day, 21 years later. The seat leather has retained its colour, the only thing to note is the drivers seat having some very minor creases and the armrest is beginning to sag, yet overall in great condition.

The carpets look excellent and clean along with the door cards and headlining. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at this luxurious cabin space.

Dashboard

The dashboard on this W220 looks excellent. Walnut trim combined with a host of electrical buttons and switches. The instrument cluster looks great and doesn't look dated even today.

Mick reports all the buttons and gauges are working well on this luxury saloon with no problems noted.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A contrasting brown original steering wheel puts you in full control of this S-Class.

Coupled with an automatic gear selector, both of which are in excellent condition for their age and mileage.

Mechanics

The S280 offers the offers economy with S-Class style and comfort.

Engine and Gearbox

The S280 packs a punch with its 2.8L V6 M112 E28 engine which outputs 194bhp. The engine is the most economical of all the S-Class W220 engines and this one has really been cared for over its life with a fully stamped service book, low ownership and extremely clean MOT history.

Coupled to a 5-speed gearbox that has also had the attention it deserves. See the start up video to see the engine operating without fault.

Suspension and Brakes

The S280 features front wishbone suspension with transverse stabilizer rear suspension and ventilated disc brakes.

Like the engine, the suspension and brakes have always been given the attention they deserve and Mick reports no unusual sounds or knocks from the suspension and notes the brakes are very responsive with no issues.

The Drive

Effortless, the car sweeps along the road like it's floating on clouds. Mick reports a top drive in this luxury saloon, with plenty of torque to tap into.

An experience you need to try for yourself to fully appreciate.

Electrics and Other

The newest S-Class's are always crammed to the brim with the latest technology and this S280 is no different, even 21 years later this car still packs an awful lot of equipment. It still has the original stereo with cassette player in place.

History and Paperwork

UK RHD, in Alexandrite Green, well maintained desirable modern classic that ticks a lot of boxes.

Most of the W220's you'll find on the market have lead hard lives, travelled miles, and put to work. This example is a little different, only ~64,500 miles, a low number of owners and serviced by Mercedes-Benz/specialists throughout its life. Couple that with a lovely colour combination of the exterior/interior, and you've got something that stands out from the crowd.
