Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Moving convertibles into the 21st century with some of the most advanced electronics of the day, the R129 was certainly a car for the person that wanted something sporty and luxurious.

Launched in 1989 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz R129 was based on a shortened floorpan of the W124. The SL featured some innovative designs for the time, including the hidden away roll over bar and the optional Adaptive Damping System, making it one of the safest vehicles made at the time.

In 1998, this particular model was the facelift model which featured body coloured bumpers and side panels, moving the SL away from the two-tone look of the 90’s. Another big change for Mercedes was to make the rear lights more smooth as opposed to the ribbed look from previous years, all these changes brought a more of a modern look to the SL

With a recent light restoration to some known troublesome areas and a full service, this facelift SL280 is ready for the new owner to enjoy some luxurious motoring in a classic convertible.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Esat the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Purchased after a nostalgic 1994 SL purchase, the face-lift SL280 has brought a more modern feel to SL ownership.

Esat purchased the car in May this year shortly after purchasing a 1994 pre facelift model. With more modern looks, Esat has enjoyed carrying out some work on the SL including some areas of paint to keep the classic convertible looking as fresh as possible.

After having some fun the car, Esat has decided to downsize his Mercedes-Benz collection to make room for another vehicle he has in mind. He mentions that these cars are perfect for the summer months and even the winter with the hard top. Esat will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

A modern classic R129 facelift model bringing you into the 2000’s with a touch of luxury.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are the originals, which have just recently been refurbished to a bright metallic silver finish, and so there are no kerb marks or scuffs to the faces of them. The tyres are matching and were replaced in 2017.

Bodywork

Walking around the car, the panel gaps look to be as they should and the hard top roof is in good condition. We did remove this to see the soft top and this too is in good condition. Spending most of its life folded up, there is some slight creasing to the plastic windows and fabric as you would expect.

The lower plastic trim from 1998 onwards was colour coded for a more modern feel and this is all in nice condition with no scuffs that we could see. The nearside indicator has a small crack on the lower corner, the rest of the lights are free from any cracks.

Paint

This SL 280 is finished in Mercedes-Benz Brilliant Silver and is well presented. There has been some paint work carried out to tidy up a couple of known problem areas, namely the front wings just on the front edge of the wheel arches, the hard top has been painted due to some scratches and also the tailgate. There are some small chips to the edges of the doors but these are in keeping with the age and mileage of the Mercedes-Benz.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all original, and in good condition with no noticeable scratches to mention. There is a small stone chip on the drivers side lower corner, but it looks as though a windscreen chip repair specialist could carry this out with ease.

The black trim around the windows is all nice and straight and has a smooth finish with no evidence of any corrosion under the outer finish.

Interior

From 1998 onwards, the softer Napper leather was used to finish the Mercedes interiors for an even more luxurious feel.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the face-lift are Black Nappa leather and are generally in good condition with just some slight wear to the driver's bolster, and a couple of light scratches which could be recolored by a leather specialist. The passenger seat has just a couple of light scratches and again could be easily repaired. This can even be done by the DIY mechanic as you can now buy the repair kits to carry out this job. The rear seats don't look to have seen much use and are therefore in excellent condition.

The carpets have some genuine mats to protect them which are in good condition. Under the protective mats the carpets are in excellent condition and look to have no obvious sign of any wear. The boot area is nice and clean with a full sized spare hiding in the wheel well, together with the jack and wheel brace.

Dashboard

The dash is free from any cracking. The instruments are the later style with the digital odometer reading, which is currently sitting at 89,788.

The centre console is finished with the wood trim and this looks to be in good condition with no splits to the trim, but there are some light scratches in keeping with the age of the vehicle. The switches for the heaters, windows and roof are all legible and again don’t look to have any wear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is the original half wood and half leather which is in good condition and looks to have no real signs of wear to the wood and just some light wear to the leather.

The automatic gear stick also looks to be free from wear and sits in the surround and the numbers are legible.

Mechanics

A 2.8L V6 powerhouse certainly packs a punch when you press the loud pedal.

Engine and Gearbox

The Mercedes roadster fires up with the flick of the key from cold, and the V6 sounds lovely with no untoward noises creeping in. The SL280 ran up to temperature nicely with no signs of any leaks that we could see.

Esat reports that the car pulls well through the automatic gearbox and is reported to change smoothly, with no noises coming from the transmission side of things.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension on the SL 280 uses independent dampers with separate springs up front with anti-dive geometry, and to the rear is 5 multi-link arms with separate gas filled dampers and coil springs offering anti-lift and anti-squat geometry. Esat reports the ride is nice and smooth and the car handles extremely well.

Dual circuit hydraulic power assisted, and discs all round are what bring this SL280 to a nice sharp halt, with ABS if needed.

The Drive

Perfect for cruising or driving around town, the SL280 has something for everyone to enjoy!

Luxury, decent performance thanks to the 2.8 V6, with a top speed of 140 mph, it's certainly capable of achieving a pleasurable drive for a car that's pushing 30 years old.

Electrics and Other

Esat reports that to his knowledge all the electrics are working as they should. One of the main things which we saw in action was the advanced electric roof, which works quickly going up and down to a close, nice and smoothly.

Electric memory seats which can be adjusted at the touch of a button from the door panels and even the height of the headrest is electrically adjustable. Luxury in every sense with the SL280.

History and Paperwork

A smart R129, this SL280 has been recently prepared for sale, the low ownership history has helped to ensure this car has been cherished over the years.

A nice history file comes with the car including the service book with some stamps, and also the owners manuals, followed up with plenty of previous MOT certificates.

More recently, the 280 has been given a full service to ensure everything is up to date and a fresh MOT carried out on 1st April 2021.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks; Seller ID, V5, HPI.
