The CL600 AMG is quite literally the last word in technology. An accomplished cruiser with plenty of accommodation and a substantial boot, it was introduced as the brand's flagship coupe in 1998, with an unparalleled equipment list, that is still considered special today.

Powered by a 362 bhp 5.8-litre V12 powerplant, a few of the car's impressive highlights include hydropneumatic suspension, ESP, brake assist, Keyless Go, Parktronic, Bi-xenon headlamps and fully electronic-adjustable cooling/massage seats. With the V12 configuration fast becoming consigned to automotive history, there cannot be a better opportunity to obtain such a potent yet durable package that is unashamedly lavish with a hint of discretion.

The ride is like a magic carpet!

Bob has a long history of owning classic American cars and is well versed in dealing with power. It's this correlation with power that attracted him to the V12 Mercedes, but that's where the comparisons end. Bob appreciates the CL600's comfort, graceful power delivery and sheer finesse. Having recently obtained it from a friend, who had bought the car from a specialist in 2013, Bob has decided to consolidate his collection due to health issues and a lack of use.

The CL600 is all about discretion, prestige and presence.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original 19" AMG alloys that could do with a refurb as they are showing light signs of age - an easy and inexpensive job for your local alloy wheel specialist.

The Accelera tyres are all over 10 years. but show legal tread.

Bodywork

The car's structure looks good, with no issues noted on the sills, floorplan or inner wings. The engine bay looks solid, with minor signs of corrosion noted on the top of the inner arch near the washer tank. Externally the car presents well with a handful of issues noted; the nearside rear lower arch has minor signs of under paint bubbling, and there are small signs of bubbling around the sunroof. The car is generally free of metalwork dents, with a cohesive panel fit and equal panel gaps. Both passenger doors' soft-touch function with the multi-link door hinge operating perfectly and boot and bonnet struts both functioning as expected.

Paint

The paint is well applied throughout, with matching hues and a decent finish. The car shows typical age-related road wear, with front wings and front edge of the bonnet showing minor paint damage, a little lacquer blemish and a few other minor marks elsewhere. The front bumper shows slight road chips with light scuffs noted on both bumpers.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The rear centre stop light and nearside corner of the rear has a small crack, and the driver-side door mirror lens shows signs of repair. It also displays lamination damage but is still functional. The front passenger windows have minor signs of lamination on the edges, but the windscreen is intact with no damage.

Some of the trim shows minor signs of age, but could easily be remedied.

Seats and Carpets

What a special place to sit!

The cooled seats are in decent shape and still retain their novel massage feature. There are a few age-related signs in line with a car of this mileage, the front seats show light patches of discolouration (the outer side of the passenger side is the most noticeable aspect) but are generally free from rips or cracks.

The carpets are in good shape, with no evidence of dampness noted.

Dashboard

The dashboard is well presented, with some signs of age. There are minor scuffs on the glove box and some of the softer plastics but the veneer and stitched leather have been well preserved. The dials and controls are in good shape, all are said to be functional.

The door cards are in good shape too, with minor signs of wear.

The passenger door is missing its speaker cover.

The headlining is in good condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition, with no outstanding impediments.

The gear knob shows minor signs of age as you'd expect.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start did not suggest any issues, with no dashboard warning lights flagging up any trouble. The V12 engine ticks over sweetly, with no undulations or hiccups. The car idles with no ill effects on oil pressure or engine temperature, and there was no evidence of oil leaks noted. The gear change is slick with no slippage and the exhaust is in good shape with no blowing.

Suspension and Brakes

The car is said to ride well with no reported issues with the Active Body Control, the suspension goes up and down as it should on the button.

The brakes despite a lack of recent use work well with no ill effects.

The Drive

The car is currently on SORN, so the drive was brief and conducted on a private road at lower speeds. There were no issues observed, with the car pulling well when pushed. No interior rattles were noted. The engine note lends itself to cruising but there is plenty of devastating power waiting to be unleashed. The general ambience of the CL600 disguises the car's apparent girth but it has a surprising talent for agility.

The ride is composed, almost feeling stationary while in motion with the damping and ride remaining cosseting.

Electrics and Other

The nearside window electrics are a little sluggish but seal well once in place.

The wired-in Nokia carphone is still in place.

History and Paperwork

The car comes with a healthy service history, with evidence of positive upkeep by previous owners.

The previous owner has documented some of the work carried out on the car over the 9 years of ownership, which covers a new windscreen, new front discs and new radiator among several cosmetic and mechanical repairs, totalling £2,500. The service book has stamps up to 2015 but has only seen 6,000 miles since then. It has an MOT to June 2023.
