The R129 model SL320 benefitted from a facelift in 1998 along with the introduction of the 3.2L V6 engine providing improved performance and making this turn of the century roadster worthy of a place in the Mercedes-Benz history book.

Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March of 1989, the Mercedes-Benz R129 platform was a direct replacement for the R107 of previous years and brought with it a number of changes including a hidden roll over bar and adaptive damping system, making this one of the safest vehicles of its time.

From the model year of 1998 onwards the SL320 was given a revised facelift consisting of new wheel designs, body coloured bumpers and door handles, soft nappa leather interior, and the introduction of the 3.2L V6 engine in place of the straight six of previous model years. All of this came together to provide the vehicle with a much more modern exterior, luxurious interior, and of course the new V6 engine.

This particular car has low mileage at only ~49,900 and has been owned by the same family since new (now on its 3rd registered keeper), meaning consistent servicing and maintenance.

Meet the owner

This car has been in the family since new in 2000 and has been a pleasure to both own and drive.

Tamir has owned this SL since 2014, with his family having owned it since new in 2000, belonging to a family member before being passed to his father, and then subsequently to himself. The car has been well maintained mechanically and has relatively low miles for its age, when speaking with Tamir he told us that despite being over two decades old he loves how well the car keeps up with modern traffic both in appearance and performance.

Due to his father no longer being able to keep up with maintenance on the vehicle, the family have decided to sell it so that it can be enjoyed and maintained by someone with both the time and capacity to do so. Tamir will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The R129 SL320 features a facelifted exterior, providing classic 90’s/00’s sports car styling combined with Brilliant Silver paintwork and Silver 5 spoke wheels to create a well rounded and attractive exterior.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels suffer from surface corrosion and are in real need of a refurb as pictured, to match the general good condition of the rest of the car. However, this appears to be only skin deep and does not affect the structural integrity of the wheels.

The Continental tyres look to be in good condition, with good tread overall and no signs of degradation to the sidewalls or tread surface.

Bodywork

The bodywork itself appears to be straight and true, panel gaps and shut lines look good. There are no visible bumps, dents, or knocks to the bodywork, and the sills and wheel arches appear to be fairly solid too. The car is suffering from some typical corrosion for this model on the front offside wing, and on the hard top as pictured.

Paint

The "Brilliant Silver" paintwork on the vehicle is a good match in colour and finish across the car, Tamir telling us that he doesn't believe the car has had any paintwork in the past. There are a number of parking scrapes etc across the car, and some paint wear to the lower front bumper as pictured too. On the nearside body of the car, there is a particularly deep scratch to the lower section as pictured.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition, including the glass roof of the hard top, we couldn’t find any major chips, cracks, or scratches to any of the glass present on the vehicle.

In terms of the trim, the black window surrounds have the typical colour change that comes with age on this model, and other trim around the bumpers have parking related scuffs to them, and some lacquer peel as pictured. Please note, the front trim item on the bumper which covers the towing eye point is missing.

On our visit, we weren't able to remove the hard top, and so cannot verify the condition of the hood.

INTERIOR VIDEO

Interior

With electronically adjustable seats, full Nappa leather interior, burl wood dashboard inserts, and space for four, the interior of the SL320 is a very comfortable place to be.

Seats and Carpets

The black Nappa leather seats are in great condition for their age, with no cracks, rips, or tears present in the hide, and the colour remains steadfast with no dye transfer or spots of wear.

The carpets too are in good condition, with next to no wear even on high traffic areas. The carpet is of good quality as is to be expected from Mercedes-Benz, with the nice thick pile only adding to the luxurious feel of the interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard is also in good condition, we couldn’t see any signs of delamination of the burl wood inserts, a common problem with older wooden dashboards, and the rest of the dash is in good condition too with no visible scratches or cracks to any of the plastics.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black leather steering wheel is in good condition much like the seats, showing minimal signs of wear with no visible colour loss and the stitching is in good condition too with no real damage to speak of.

The automatic gear selector is also in good condition, being the automatic model it does not see the sort of use a manual gear stick would and as such has held its condition very well.

Mechanics

With a 3.2L V6 engine producing ~221bhp and a very capable automatic gearbox, the Mercedes-Benz SL320 provides an engaging and fun drive with the reliability of typical German engineering.

Engine and Gearbox

During our ‘On The Road’ video above you can see the engine start from cold with no hesitation, turning over just fine and then idling comfortably as you would expect.

The gearbox performed as expected too, with the automatic box shifting gears reliably and smoothly without any knocks or lurches either.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension performed well during our time with the car, handling corners nicely, providing a good level of comfort to the ride, and did not present any knocks or bangs that we could tell.

The brakes stopped the car quickly and efficiently with no squealing or grinding, however they have been noted as advisories on the most recent MOT along with brake pipes as pictured.

The Drive

Having the V6 engine the vehicle sounds fantastic, making the car worth driving purely for the engine note, however combined with the ease of the automatic gearbox this really does make for a wonderful driving experience. Be it B-Road blasts or lazy Sunday driving, the SL320 is a fantastic all rounder.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we checked all electrical aspects of the car, including the electronically adjustable seats, and all the usual electrics such as stereo, blowers, and lights all of which worked as expected with no faults.

Having been kept in the family since new the car has been consistently serviced throughout the years, most recently serviced in February of 2019 at 39,071 miles.

Having owned the vehicle for the last 22 years, Tamirs family has kept up with maintenance and servicing throughout the life of the vehicle, with gaps in service history being due to the vehicle not being driven.

The car was most recently serviced in February of 2019 at Mercedes Lakeside where the vehicle also underwent a standard health check which can be found in our paperwork gallery.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
